Canada - 10 dead and at least 15 wounded in stabbing attacks in Saskatchewan, 2022

Those poor people at James Smith Cree!! Their nerves must be at a terrible fraying point!

Please, please, please catch this guy so that they can begin to grieve in peace.
While I didn’t grow up on a reserve, I grew up in a rural part of Canada with 3 reserves within a 15 minute drive.

We never locked our doors. We didn’t even have blinds on our windows (our closest neighbour was over 1km away). This is a SMALL community…….to have lost 10 people in such a tragic way is unthinkable. They will be on edge and jumping at their own shadows. I’m sure there have already been crisis teams sent, but when you combine this nightmare with the issues of generational trauma, substance abuse, domestic violence and poverty……I just hope the community can come together to heal from this.

But before that can happen they need to find MS.

For what it’s worth, I strongly disagree that the RCMP would purposefully release false information (for example his location)…..I also don’t see MS returning to the reserve if he actually left. I wish we had more info regarding the Regina sighting - was this like the vehicle/occupants/license plate caught on camera or just some random person saying they saw the vehicle?

Why was the press told to leave the reservation and who told them to leave?
I’m hunting for the link - the elders asked the media to leave the area to allow them to process their grief and honor those who died. This in addition to the safety issue I suspect. * I am not finding the link for this info just yet so please consider it my own thought/opinion.

Edited to add: Manhunt continues for mass stabbing suspect after RCMP say he’s not in the James Smith Cree Nation community

“An hour after the alert, all entrances and exits to the community had been blocked off. RCMP were checking inside vehicles and looking in trunks of vehicles moving in the area. Members of the community asked media to leave the scene.”

“Individual houses and crime scenes in the community had previously been cordoned off and guarded by RCMP on Monday, but there had been nothing barring or restricting general access to the First Nation.”

Regarding the vehicle sighting, the Regina police chief said that they were fairly confident it was the car based on someone citing the license plate number (or at least a partial plate...it wasn't clear to me).

Have been wondering if the wanted man usually wears his glasses, does he need them to drive? Glasses seem like the type of thing that could easily get broken or lost in a scuffle, imo, speculation.

''According to RCMP, Sanderson is not “located in the community,” but a provincewide search continues for a man believed to have been involved in Saskatchewan’s deadliest mass killing.''

“Use caution allowing others into your residence,” RCMP said in the alert.

“Do not leave a secure location. DO NOT APPROACH suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitch hikers. Report suspicious persons, emergencies or info to 9-1-1. Do not disclose police locations.”

So if they’re fairly confident let’s assume the vehicle was in Regina around noon on Sunday.

Let’s say you’ve just killed a bunch of people, your brother is dead (did you kill him?), you’ve driven about 3 hours south to Regina (which happens to be hosting the Labour Day Classic vs Wpg on Sunday, which adds a ton of visitors and traffic and chaos to the city), you are most likely drunk and/or high (based on reports of you being a different person when sober), and maybe you’re starting to “come down”…….unless you brought a stash with you, you’re going to want to score. You know the RCMP is looking for you. You have some idea of how to stay hidden since you’ve been “wanted” since May (but how hard were they really looking for you?). You are likely using a burner phone. You are possibly in need of medical attention. Where do you go? Who is helping you?

He has to be staying with someone or still in his car. Any hotel/motel would have a record. He hasn’t crossed the border legally (or at least with that vehicle) bc there would be a record of that. Tons of illegal ways to cross in that part of the world though. And SO many back roads in Sask/AB/MB - if he was able to get off the main highways he could easily evade the cops.

My guess is the next break comes from delving into his connections (who was he in jail with, people from his past, people who have left his reserve and now live in Regina, people he communicated with on social media, family members and extended family members) or from a random sighting.

Here is a look at some of the victims:

''Wes Petterson — The 77-year-old Weldon resident was a widower who lived with his adult grandson. People in the community said he loved his cats, was proud of his homemade saskatoon berry jam and frequently helped out his neighbours.

Lana Head — Several media reports said Head was a 49-year-old mother of two daughters. CBC quoted Head’s former partner, Michael Brett Burns, as saying Head was a security guard at Northern Lights Casino in Prince Albert, Sask.

Gloria Burns — Media reports quoted siblings as saying the 62-year-old was a first responder on the reserve. CBC reported that she was killed while responding to a crisis call during the attacks.

Earl Burns – The Saskatchewan First Nations Veterans Association confirmed the death of Earl Burns in a Facebook message saying he was a veteran with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Burns’s sister confirmed his death in a statement to news website paNow in Prince Albert. Deborah McLean told the station her brother died protecting his family and that his wife is in the ICU.''

'I'll be OK when we find him': No sign of Myles Sanderson after search of James Smith Cree Nation

While most residents took shelter, one man cruised on an ATV, saying he wanted to help police locate the wanted killers. He asked his name not be published but said a relative of his had been killed in Sunday’s attack.

“I’ll be OK when we find him,” he said.

Another resident, who also asked his name not be used, said police had deployed dogs on the community and that they have been instructed to not leave their homes. Later in the afternoon, cruisers could be seen slowly leaving the nation and returning in the direction of nearby Melfort.

Well this photo is not very helpful then. He looks younger and heavier when it was taken.

“RCMP shared a new photo of Sanderson wearing glasses but say he might not be wearing them and that his current appearance may not exactly resemble the photo.“

It would be fantastic if the RCMP were able to track the location of the Nissan Rogue through it’s “stolen vehicle locator”. Even if he switched vehicles it would give them a clue as to where that occurred. I can’t help but recall the NS massacre where the culprit murdered a lone victim and stole her car. As she lived alone, nobody was able to immediately report anything to police.

Using sophisticated GPS technology, the Stolen Vehicle Locator feature can help pinpoint your vehicle’s location and assist police in locating it in the unfortunate event that it is stolen. A police report is required prior to activating the Stolen Vehicle Locator.

Here are a few more details about Myles' history, from the Parole Board document that the Washington Post obtained. I see that some have been published already by CBC, so there is a bit of repetition.

(Paraphrased)
He has a history of violence that began in his youth and continued with “no significant breaks” for nearly 20 years.

He had 59 convictions as an adult ... assault, assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer and robbery.

He has a lifetime prohibited-weapons order against him, placed by judges.

In 2017 he barged into an ex-partners home, threw cement blocks through a window and at a car.

A few days later he threatened to murder an employee at a First Nations band store and to burn down the house of the man's parents.

In 2018 he stabbed two men with a fork, and beat another unconcsious.

Also in 2018 he kicked a police officer in the face and head repeatedly.

His parole conditions included no drug and alcohol use, no relationships with women without his parole officer's permission.

Lots of violence but the "no relationships with women" seems to be new. At least, to me. Thanks for this post!:)

Why MS was released

Excerpt
Psychological reports describe his belief that he has post traumatic stress disorder and has taken anti-psychotic medication in the past. In 2020, he was taking medication for attention deficit disorder. He also reported problems with anxiety and suicidal thoughts. A psychologist reported various factors that could have influenced his offending, such as the deprivations of his childhood, and supported his conditional statutory release.

I agree I don't think he would've returned to the reservation. There were roadblocks erywhere & police using ATV's also. The Regina sighting was confirmed. if he's not dead already by injuries (or suicide) he has help.
