Cell Phones and LISK

There are more cell towers today than there were then AND not (especially back then) competing cell phone companies don't share their towers as much as you might think. That's part of thr problem in drawing any radius. Second thing is that cell phone radio frequencies are extremely linear. I've been on the water off of Gilgo and had cellphones connect to towers as far away as New Jersey, Brooklyn and even Connecticut.
Solid clue that hasn't been explored...

Maureens phone pinged off a cell tower on Fire Island .....weeks after she disappeared....someone was using her phone to check on voicemail messages...

Have police sourced historical data of cell phone towers available at the time to establish a radius ..... where the killer was??

I have done a search.... there are sites.... so mainland Patchogue wouldn't hit off water tower fire Island. ....but someone on Fire Island itself would....

Really finding it hard to believe that with resources.....we plebs don't have..they cant source an accurate spot that the phone was switched on from.

Has LE conducted Cell Tower Dumping of the tower(s) in immediate area? They could also dump from the area the girls spoke to the perp. This could provide so many possible leads. They could gather a wealth of information from this, cell info of potential suspects coming and going many times, monitor all cell phone activity of the area Shannon went missing, and much more! They do not need a supeona for it either. He could have used a cheap burner phone only to contact ads and switched to a regular with other uses, and there may be a way to see a ping from burner phone and if reg phone running they are simultaneously pinging together giving the suspects identity away!

Police officers in Richland County, South Carolina are currently defending the use of a controversial investigation method that grants their departments access to thousands of cell phone users’ data in the search for criminals.

The technique, in which law enforcement officials rely on what are known as “tower dumps,” is an increasingly common policing tactic in local departments across the country. Following a crime, law enforcement officials locate nearby cell towers and request all of the call, text, and data transmissions that occurred during the crime from the tower’s provider. The majority of the data collected belongs to individuals with no connection to the crime.

Subjecting yourself to data seizure through tower dumps is easy. Most cell phone activity connects you to a tower in a way that police can collect: making phone calls, texting, and using social media, such as Tweeting or logging into Facebook.

"So for example if you have a smart phone and you're checking your email, that would cause some communication between your cell phone and one or more cell towers," Christopher Sogohian, a principal technologist for the ACLU, toldWLTX. "The police can then go back to the phone company and ask for identifying information.”
Unlike many forms of data seizure, tower dumps can be executed without a warrant. In accordance with a provision of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986, law enforcement can, and often does, rely on judge-issued court orders to obtain cell-site data. Such orders don’t need to meet a probable cause requirement and so are based on significantly less evidence than is required for a warrant.

Such records, if they existed back then, have surely berm purged by now.

At&t has Cell tower records stored from 2008 until now available, the other companies have less time, but the info can still be found even after purged, it would be more time consuming and costly. With texts, even if a company says they are gone after a year, they can still be found, they are not right up front easily accessed, but they are around.

If the girls got a call asking for them to leave their phones they'd say no, if more $ got offered wud it not start to put their guards up?. For them to agree I feel they must kno whoever is calling, have seen them before & developed the opinion they're no threat whatsoever. Or has it ever been suggested Lisk maybe using a female accomplice, if a call came in from a woman asking about meeting a couple that wud appear far from threatening. Has that idea ever been considered?

I think the girls who left their phones behind definitely knew who they were going to meet and felt comfortable enough to meet them without their security (phone.) Even if it were a couple, I highly doubt that they would put themselves in such a vulnerable position while meeting someone new. If more money was offered that would definitely raise red flags. I don't think any of these girls were new at this, so they would have known the signs (like someone asking them not to bring their phone) of when you DO NOT go! When the "creep factor" hits you in the gut, you bail!

I like the idea someone posted a few back that The phone was on charge while a "quick trip out"........ Left them vulnerable.

I agree. I think that there was something about this guy that the girls trusted him without question. (Law enforcement, doctor, someone well known, etc.)
I was in a similar field as these girls when I was a little younger (no comments please) and I remember having customers ask me not to text/make calls/social media while they were spending $. And especially if they are spending a good amount of $, I think most girls are wiling to abide by these type of requests for the right price.
I dont think if a woman was there that would have made the girls feel more "comfortable" or "let their guard down." Girls in the adult industry dont particularly like dealing with most female clients. They can be judgemental, mean, disrespectful, jealous and downright crazy. Remember, the adult industry is not like the real world. So things that would make sense in the normal life of most people (like a woman feeling safe if another woman is there) may not fit in the subculture lifestyle and mindset of an escort.

I can't shake the feeling that they were comfortable leaving the phones behind because they knew him. No threats, no VIPs, no nothing.

TBH this really reminds me of Steven Wright, the "Ipswich Strangler". He was a "friend" of all the women he was later found guilty of killing. He drove them around, he lent them money, he was a sympathetic ear, he was a regular figure in the area and they, unfortunately, trusted him.

Even after the first one or two women were found, IIRC, one of his future victims was interviewed on TV talking about her friend and how she was afraid but had to keep working, but she still had no fear of Wright, no clue he was the killer.

I will try to find a link, I think it was Paula Clennell who talked to them. How utterly horrific.

In my completely unscientific opinion, I think this guy was a Steve Wright to the original 4.

A cab driver? A street pastor? Outreach worker? IDK.

I'm just curious here and I'm not being facetious ps149 but how did you know where your calls were pinging off? Is there a way to tell?

I know there has been discussion going back and forth as to whether or not LISK asked the women to leave their phones behind or not. A thought occurred to me. Who wouldn't want someone with a phone? Could it be that LISK states there will be someone else in an apartment or house that he doesn't want to take a chance the girls phone will ring? I hope I'm explaining that correctly. For example, if the wife is going to be in the house at the same time as LISK and the women, he may ask the women to leave their phones behind so the wife doesn't hear the phone ring. Likewise, it could be LISK lives with his parent(s) and doesn't want them to hear. I'm not saying this is the exact scenario but it COULD be likely that is how he lured them to his place without causing them alarm without their phone.

Another scenario might be a job in which the phone cannot be heard by the boss. I'm not saying a boss would truly be there~~but~~it is possible he tells the girls they will be there to trick them into leaving their phones behind. IE: security guard at a bank or something along those lines?

I understand what you're saying here but couldn't he just as easily tell the women their phones must be turned off or silenced? From what I understand, of the GB4 the first two that went missing, Melissa and Marie had their phones. It was Megan and Amber that didn't have them. This leads me to believe 2 things....

1) something with Melissa and her phone really angered him. Whatever it was, it caused him to keep her phone and use it to call and taunt her sister. It may have been what made him decide that he no longer wanted his victims to have their phones. Maybe Melissa used it to threaten him in some way and call the police or his wife or girlfriend or something.

2) maybe it's something much more simplistic, like advancing technology and GPS tracking. Maybe LISK was afraid their phones would give up his location or something. I mean that would be a pretty plausible concern. iPhones were out in 2009 and 2010. I don't remember how sophisticated GPS was back then but it did exist.

@ Notorious

Or he knew Melissa via her work, and knew of her sister, somehow, and used Melissa as a twisted way to get to her sister, the one he really wanted? Just throwing it all out there and seeing if anything sticks, TBH.

Just about to post the same thing about Melissa's sister, maybe he wanted her too, or in a sick way, scared her from going into the same line of work?

Or, after his episode with Shannon gilbert, he made amber and Megan leave their phones behind?

Good catch maddalena1. If related to Shannon's call, it could be the john, someone who has a home police scanner (I have known a few people addicted to listening to them from their home) and they heard the responses, or a policeman who heard it.

Before there was such a thing as "Free Roaming Charges", my cell phone bill would often show that I made a call from Long Branch, NJ, Stamford, CT, etc... even though I never left the Fire Island/Jones Beach area.

I was thinking back to 1998-2011 regarding throw out and burner phones. There were two types and I remember reading the police were questioning the one you could buy that already had pre paid minutes and there was no need to call and register a name, a home phone, or any identifying information. Drug dealers often used these too. When the minutes ran out, you could add minutes with a pre paid anonymous credit card. I had to buy one for a short time in between phones. I remember it burned so fast through minutes, 20 minutes was 5 or less minutes of usage and it would be very expensive to keep up minutes on this type of phone. If the police had suspicions about the phone they traced back to a Mickey Mouse with no other identifying info, and it was used alot. This may have been an initial clue the suspect was well off. The other type of burner phone was more widely used and the minute plans were not a rip off, true to the minute, but you do have to give identifying information before it is activated. This phone took over the existence of the other. I do not know if the other is sold anymore or is legal because it's legality was being argued within the law community.

The phones pinging and the motels within Massapequa connecting to this case surely have strong meaning.

Someone does indeed need to connect all the dots!!

Kolker’s book clarifies that a call to Melissa’s voice mail pinged to a cell tower in Massapequa on the night she went missing (Jul 12 2009 Sun). Police then went to nearby motels to speak with the staff and review security tapes and found nothing.

My take has always been the police logically looked in the area closest to the cell tower and logically checked the motels in that area. Basic police work. NOT the way it was often reported by MSM – which was: her call pinged from the Budget Inn and Best Western. How can a cell ping two different places in one call and show up on phone records as two different buildings that do not even have cell towers? No, IMO it pinged from a tower and the police went to motels closest to that tower.

Budget Inn Massapequa

Best Western Bar Harbour

The cell tower closest to both motels:

Carmans Rd Cell Tower

In 2008-2009 across the street from the Carmans Rd tower a condominium complex was being built. The sales data for these units show first developments of complex were built in 2008 and sold in 2009 – meaning: many completed but empty units. Construction crew? Landscaper crew (new trees went in as showed on Google Earth historical views between 10/2008 and 9/2009)?

There is London nursery up the road from these motels. I have seen burlap sacks there! Zoom in on the map and see the proximity to Budget Inn: http://londonlandscapeltd.com/contact-us/
