Coronavirus COVID-19 *Global Health Emergency* #17

From the looks of that latest US tracking map, we will have a representative from each of the big hotspots, California, NY and Texas at my mom’s 80th BD party here in Michigan on this coming Saturday. I am beyond stressed. And NOBODY bit me seems to care. I was told I am overreacting basically and nobody is forced to come. There are 15 people over 72 that are coming. This is insane. I don’t even know what to do.
You may have to be the one to rock the boat.
Call the organizer. Tell them to re-schedule
for later when it's safe. Tell them they will feel terrible if your mom catches the virus at her
own party. 80 yr. olds don't recover too well from this. It could be a death sentence.
Then start calling others who have a voice in your family. And keep calling.
Good Luck!!

I know about the not caring. My dad is 77 turning 78 this year and I have told him that he needs to stop going out as much as he gets bored so he will just wonder the shops for hours at a time which he enjoys. His reply to my concern was “ nobody is going to keep me at home”

I was thinking about that yesterday as I unwillingly mingled amongst the masses near the San Francisco airport.... gosh, an “arm’s length” is just not that long! It barely meets my criteria of acceptable personal space as it is- coronavirus or not. I was realizing people absolutely breathe on you within an arm’s length. Kind of arbitrary and misguided coronavirus advice if you ask me.

MOO.

When discussing social distancing, here’s a phrase that needs to be added to our COVID-19 vocabulary:

“multiphase turbulent buoyant cloud”

How Far Does a Sneeze Travel? - University Health News

BBM

“The shocking answer uncovered by MIT: Sneezes can travel up to 200 feet. That’s about two-thirds the length of a football field (imagine a quarterback in football airing out a bomb—strong-armed passers like Aaron Rodgers can heave a ball 67 yards in the air. That visual helps answer the question “How far does a sneeze travel?”

MOO - An arms length is not enough!! Particles from a sneeze or cough can also hang in the air as long as ten minutes & can spread through ventilation systems!...

I personally was curious about Broadway NYC. For now:

Broadway League Issues Statement on Coronavirus: 'Productions Continue to Play as Scheduled'

Despite concerns about the coronavirus, Broadway shows are going on as scheduled. The Broadway League has issued a statement telling audience members that Broadway remains open.

“The safety and security of our theatergoers and employees is our highest priority,” the statement says. “We are following the lead of our city, state and federal elected officials as we implement strategies recommended by public health authorities and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in all of our theaters and offices as all productions continue to play as scheduled.”

Broadway theaters have taken measures to ensure the health of audiences and performers, including increased frequencies in cleaning and disinfecting of the public and backstage areas. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer dispensers are also available in the lobby of every theater. But the League does encourage anyone who is not feeling well or who exhibit cold and flu symptoms to stay home and to contact their ticket providers for exchanges.

Yup. It makes no sense to announce that crowds of 1000 are okay since it only takes one person to sneeze less than 6 feet away and there is a good chance of contamination. That's sounds crazy and alarmist, but that is the distance that is established for now.

Whether the crowd is 5 or 1000, one person infected is all it takes.

Worth Repeating!!!!

As the NBA prepares for the possibility that the coronavirus outbreak could cause games to be played without fans in the arena, the league office delivered teams a Tuesday deadline to have several precautionary measures in place, according to a memo obtained by ESPN.

The NBA -- which will conduct a conference call Monday night with team doctors and trainers -- is calling for teams to have an infectious disease specialist on call, a nearby testing facility for the coronavirus, and a roster of essential employees who have close physical contact with players, the memo said.

H! I expected “advice following” would be bad, but early indications are showing this could be worse than I initially imagined, which is bad bc I was quoting Towering Inferno...

See this makes me so mad bc as Dr. T says the window is narrowing. We have this time to at least try to help reduce the spread and some people are wasting this opportunity. Making it worse.

Unfortunately, IMO, the US has already missed at least most of that “small window of opportunity” due entirely to the lack of
testing.

The response by the Federal Government and the CDC has been disgraceful and NEGLIGENT to this point!!

The response thus far has not been that of a world leader, but rather like a fool stumbling about in the dark.

Mistakes are still being made on a grand scale, but the lack of testing is nothing short of appalling!!!
Pleading ignorance will not suffice! The actions of the CDC, regarding test kits, and the very limited scope of which testing was made available, should be considered nothing short of gross negligence!!! The entire world was put on notice weeks ago!
America’s first line of defense has been nothing short of a bad joke.
I am both disappointed, and disheartened.

I am  !!!

Creativity under trying circumstances...:D

Quarantined Chinese students have escaped online learning by giving a homework app tens of thousands of one-star ratings on the app store.

Dingtalk, an online app that sets students homework, has suffered a rating drop from 4.9 to 1.4 overnight after students in the China epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak Wuhan, took to their screens to get the application booted from the app store.

Students discovered that if the app received enough one-star reviews, it would be removed from the store, disabling their access to the homework their teachers had set for them.
