Dahmer hunting grounds tour

Of course. Just wondering if it had been a victim's relative who started the tours, if your opinion would change.
Anyone know how long it was after MLK, JFK, or RK were assasinated before the sites became landmarks, and books written about the murders?
Can we agree that it was alot less than 21 years?

BBM:

Nope.
It's not that a friend or family member is automatically a victim. Heck- many friends and family members of persons who are victims of terrible crimes are perpetrators of crimes.
It's that anyone who decides to sanction this kind of stuff- friend, family, stranger, community- is an opportunist, imo, seeking to exploit pain for the sake of money or sensationalism.

I wouldn't have nearly the problem I do if this was a book being published or written with the intent to educate, explain, or analyze. Or even a bio or historical bio of the victims.
But a physical 'tour' (meaning, you have to pay of course...) of the horrible victimizations that occured? When there are still other victims very much present in that community?
Not so much. :(

I don't think so.The site of the St.Valentines day massacre is on a tour. Pearl Harbor is on a tour. It's been 21years. Who gets to decide how long? Before anyone can start tours we're supposed to research for living relatives? Which relatives? Immediate family or just anyone? The quickest way to get rid of something is to not buy into it. Don't take the tour.[/quote]

BBM:
Yep. Agree totally with that.
There are many people who feel that these sorts of things are a preservation of memory of the person(s) lost, and I understand that, I think.

But I'd be uber upset if there were troops of people being escorted through my community, my town, by my house, wherever, on a 'tour' that is only meant to make money on true horror. :(

Just me, maybe. Idk. I don't like the Tower of London either.

I have to admit that when I first moved to Los Angeles, one of the first things I did was look up the address of the house where Sharon Tate and her friends were killed by the Manson family. (I had just read Bugliosi's Helter Skelter.)
Yes, when my roadtripping cohorts made ground in L.A. in the mid-'70s, one of our first stops on the itinerary was 10050 Cielo Drive. Towards dusk, of course.

Maybe I should take a walk on over to the tour All?
(this weekend)

Sam, if the question is whether the government should prohibit such a tour, then I completely agree with you. It is clearly protected speech.

But if the question is whether the tour in question is in good taste, then I have to say no.

Of course, bad taste is not and should not be illegal.

His last victim died in 1991, 21 years ago. I don't think it's too soon.
I think the victim's families would disagree. For them I don't think a lifetime or two would be nearly long enough.

Why is money or morbid curiosity more important than compassion? This is a tour for a child killer for goodness sake.

It may have been 21 years but I still vividly remember the shock and horror of my own 14 year old mind watching the news. The nausea and despair of hearing the 911 call that could have, should have, saved Konerak's life as well as others. The snide comments of ignorant classmates, the haunted look of Konerak's friend, and the utter outrage and agony of the community. Feeling as I do two decades on I cannot even begin to imagine how the families and friends of Dahmer's victims must feel.

I spent my first 30 years in Milwaukee. It has some wonderful things to offer visitors and residents alike but I could never, would never, place Dahmer's horrific assault on the city I still love in that category.

ETA: I found an old article about Konerak's family for those interested: http://www.nytimes.com/1991/07/31/u...y-to-find-new-pain.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

Good point. I would think that such things would require municiple sanction in the form of a license. You need a business license. Bus tour or walking tour?

I saw them ( The Tour) on TV.

I know the area. If I am in town I will go check it out all and report back this weekend. Get a first hand view.

Nova, I am sure I would have looked up where Sharon Tate and then were killed by Manson too.

So, I guess one can't have it both ways. I better rethink my position before I post then.. :what:

This "tour" is a 1 mile walking tour. Basically it is along a stretch of bars he went trolling for victims. I am curious as how they are doing this. Are they basically bar hoping where Dahmer did? This is not the best neighborhood either. I just don't understand it. At least a bus tour is a little more confined. What are they going to walk with a bull horn and tell them "Hey, this is 219 where he met so and so."

I just don't like it.

Hum, very strange. I would think they could have went by bus, showed his work place, (the candy factory on National or is it Greenfield?) and his home.
I would have to know more about it or see it first hand.

Because the landscape has changed so much since Dahmer trolled the area, I don't see how anyone would want to see it let alone set foot on such ground intentionally. Major creepiness factor.

As a native Angeleno, I have lived with "Maps to Stars' Homes" vendors sitting on fold-up chairs for decades. I am also aware of paid tours to the sites where famous murders occurred. The chief difference there, of course, is that the notables were celebs before the crimes (except Black Dahlia).

I too have driven-by the Cielo house, both before and after it was torn-down and replaced by a new one. No other cars were doing the same. By the time I got to Nicole's condo, it had been entirely renovated. The usual traffic on the street prevented a closer look.

Bottom Line: Nothing to see, move on.

THIS Dahmer walking tour is a disgrace, and I hope that the 'enterprise' folds soon.

Being from the area where JD grew up in Ohio, as fascinated as I am with True Crime, this is one story that I have never been able to read about or watch on tv. It is just too close too home for me. I agree with those who say it is too soon for this type of tour. That is just my opinion, and I am sticking to it.
If someone needs someone to decide when the proper time will be, I am willing to be the decider. lol

Actually, the matters already been decided. His murdering happened mostly in Wisconsin, not Ohio.

Cielo Drive was on the of the very first streets I went to when google street view came out.

That is the thing. His home was torn down and I am pretty sure Ambrosia is gone too. Not positive about that tho. The mile long walk is a bunch of bars. Some of the ones he was at are no longer even there. It just doesn't really make much sense to me. Especially it being a walking tour.
