Shannon Butler said that "sources told me that there were multiple people inside that home on Sunday night. We're talking about Sunday night right after Madeline Soto's birthday party <...> there were multiple people inside that home and investigators had to go back and interview all of those folks. We know it was Stephan Sterns, we know it was Madeline Soto, we know it was Jenn Soto, but there were a couple of other family members there."

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. —
There’s a chance we won’t see or hear from Stephan Sterns until his trial — or possibly ever.

State Attorney Andrew Bain said Sterns isn’t required to appear on any of his court dates, even his trial.

However, Bain said when it comes to his trial, there are serious conversations about the consequences of not attending.

*****
So you have to have a discussion, when you sit on the bench as a judge, you have a long discussion with that person about the all the dangers and the pitfalls and what that really means for them, that you know what rights are going to be given up by doing that. And so we make sure that, you know, that's a longer conversation that has to happen when we get to that point,” Bain said.

Later in the interview, Sterns said Madeline Soto decided against ordering breakfast, and he dropped her off at a church near her school -- along with her backpack and laptop -- because she was embarrassed by his car.

Detectives later learned that Sterns was recorded on video tossing the girl’s backpack and laptop in a dumpster at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 26.

Detectives already knew that Madeline Soto was dead.

Video showed the girl slumped over in the front seat of Sterns’ car.

In the body-worn camera footage, the deputy asks, "What's going on?"

Jenn Soto replied, “So my daughter was dropped off close to school this morning but never made it."

The deputy asked, "What was she last seen wearing?"

Stephan Sterns said, "Green hoodie, white crocs and either blue or black pants. I think black shorts, black shorts? Black shorts? Um, hm.”

Jenn Soto went on to say, "She didn't want to be dropped off at school. She wanted to be dropped a half block away so she could walk."

Stephan Sterns added, “She didn't explain, she's in a phase."

Jenn Soto said, “He dropped off her off couple blocks away and drove away.”

"I thought she was looking for headphones before she kind of walking on, but she was just kind of in that direction, looked the same as any other morning,” Stephan Sterns added.

"No, nobody picked her up. I don't see her getting into anybody's car in the video. I see here sitting on property, give or take, for 10 minutes and then walking off property," the deputy said.

"She has a distinctive beauty mark on her face here. like below the nose, like right in the nose, you'd know if you saw it," he said.

Court TV reviewed more than 800 pages of documents released by the Osceola and Orange County Sheriffs’ Offices, which offered more information not only about Sterns’ changing stories but also about the physical evidence police found near the teenager’s body.

Finding Madeline’s Body

Madeline’s body was found near a line of bamboo trees less than 100 feet from the road where Sterns had been seen with a flat tire on the date she disappeared. Officers who first noticed her said she was wearing a green hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, and that her body was covered by “pieces of hay or dry grass.” The medical examiner determined that her body was in a “state of decomposition with visible insect activity around her mouth, left eye, ears and right hand.”

The documents do not offer any clues as to Madeline’s cause of death, but WFTV Investigative Reporter Shannon Butler told Vinnie Politan that her sources have told her that Madeline was strangled.

A woman who identified herself as Sterns’ ex-girlfriend contacted deputies and said that she had stopped speaking to him after he talked about sharing a bed with the teenager. She told police, “Stephan Sterns justified this behavior by saying he needed to cuddle with her so she could fall asleep. [The ex] further recalled a conversation she had with Stephan Sterns where he told her that he woke up in the bed with [redacted] with an erection and had to turn around in the bed.”
