FRENCH INTELLIGENCE 'DOCTORED FILES' TO COVER UP FAILINGS OVER ISLAMIST MURDER OF PRIEST

French spies doctored files to cover up failings that resulted in jihadists murdering a priest in his church, according to French reports.

Claims that agents post-dated documents to cover their blunders have cast a fresh spotlight on counterterrorism agencies in the wake of over a string of terror attacks that have left 239 people dead in France since 2015.

Red tape and a battle of egos between intelligence managers are costing lives, according to the report published by Mediapart, the investigative news website, which conducted a six-month investigation into the blunders.

However, it now appears that five days previously an agent at the Paris Police Prefecture Intelligence Unit had come across an encrypted channel on Telegram, a favoured messaging service with terrorists, containing a message from a certain @Jayyed boasting that “I haven’t been uncovered”.

The agent who uncovered the worrying message informed his superiors of what he considered an imminent threat and advised them to inform the General Direction of Interior Security, the French equivalent of MI5.

However, his written warnings went unanswered and senior officers at the Paris Police Prefecture Intelligence Unit were away at the time.

Officers cited by Mediapart said that after the murder, the agent was asked to post-date his notes and erase his computer's browser history to ensure that the blunder went unnoticed. But he omitted to erase the original date of the document from one of the computer files.

A Rome, le père Hamel rayonne plus que jamais

In Rome, the martyrdom of Father Hamel is on everyone's mind, first and foremost that of Pope Francis.

Father Jacques Hamel was "slaughtered on the cross". Strong but realistic words spoken by Pope Francis himself. For since his martyrdom, the French priest has always had a special place in the heart of Peter's successor. This is what the latter had affirmed in March 2018 to a young woman of the diocese of Rouen who had just given him the prayer for the beatification of the deceased priest. "I pray for him to become a saint," the Argentinian had then slipped, like a confidence.

For the bishop of Rome, Father Jacques is a true martyr, who died of hatred of the faith. And since the martyrs are blessed, he had recalled in a particularly solemn homily during a Mass for Father Hamel, it is permissible to pray to this "good, gentle brotherly man, who always sought to make peace".

Deeply touched, the Pope had authorized the opening of the beatification trial of Father Hamel only a few months after his death. It is usually five years after a faithful person ascends to heaven. Proof of the exceptional character of this derogation: before Father Hamel, the previous case was that of... Karol Wojtyla.

If the beatification trial of Father Jacques has now entered its most important phase, as l′a noted last May in the Vatican daily, L′Osservatore Romano, the process remains however long. The findings of the survey should be sent to the Vatican from here in one to two years.

Like all priests, Jacques Hamel drew his strength from the daily celebration of the Eucharist but also from his breviary. Lauds, vespers, complies... He had certainly spent long hours turning the pages of his liturgical book which had probably not left him since his beginnings.

A true relic of the elderly priest, this breviary is today carefully preserved in the Basilica of Saint Bartholomew on the island of Tiberina, in the heart of Rome. In this church, Saint John Paul II had wanted a memorial made for the martyrs of the XXth and XXIst centuries. The Norman servant of God is now part of this great cohort.

In April 2017, Pope Francis himself visited this Roman basilica for a ceremony in memory of the new martyrs. The devil "hates us and provokes persecution" because we were saved by Christ, he had then said. Before hugging Father Hamel's sister for a long, long time.

Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior, was in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray on Sunday, July 26, 2020, to pay tribute to Father Hamel, who was assassinated during a mass four years ago.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin was in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray (Seine-Maritime) on Sunday, July 26, 2020, to attend the commemorations paying tribute to Father Jacques Hamel, who was assassinated four years ago during a mass by two terrorists.

After meeting with members of Father Hamel's family, Gérald Darmanin arrived mid-morning around 10:30 a.m. in the church of Saint-Etienne, on the outskirts of Rouen.

During a silent walk leading him to the religious building, he was accompanied by Roselyne Hamel, Father Hamel's sister, Mgr Dominique Lebrun, Archbishop of Rouen, Bertrand Bellanger, President of the Departmental Council of Seine-Maritime, Pierre-André Durand, Prefect of Seine-Maritime, and deputies Sira Sylla, Hubert Wulfranc and Damien Adam.

Mass was then celebrated by Mgr Dominique Lebrun. This tribute ended with a "republican ceremony for peace and fraternity" in front of a memorial plaque near the church. A minute's silence was observed in the presence of elected representatives, including Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, Mayor of Rouen and President of the Rouen-Normandy Metropolis.

Father Hamel, aged 85, had been assassinated on 26 July 2016 by two terrorists in the church of Saint-Etienne while he was celebrating morning Mass. The priest, nicknamed "Father Jacques" by the faithful, had his throat cut at the foot of the altar at about 9:30 a.m. The last words spoken by the religious man were " Leave, Satan ".

A parishioner had also been stabbed and five hostages held by the two terrorists. The latter two were killed in a shoot-out between them and agents of the Rouen Brigade de Recherche et d'Intervention (BRI). The attack had been claimed by the organization Islamic State.

In 2017, Archbishop Dominique Lebrun, Archbishop of Rouen, announced the opening of the process for the beatification of the priest, which was closed in 2019. It was a wish of Pope Francis.
