Grocery shopping tips during Coronavirus quarantine #3

The senior center had a produce pick up this morning. They are not known for providing much but it usually very helpful items like onions, garlic, etc. Today’s box takes the prize for Most Unique.

3 MREs - no ingredient list on them so no idea if even I could eat them. My daughter’s boyfriend will take great joy in eating them. Must be a guy thing.

Wow those are expensive! The ingredients are on a website...
They are? I had no idea. I’ve never seen one before.

When Hurricane Irma nailed St. Thomas in 2017, my oldest was in grad school at UVI. The Marines stormed the beach to bring food and water after 2-3 days. They handed her an MRI and she opened it. The only thing she could eat was the Tootsie roll. So they found another flavor and she could eat one item. Her friends were opening theirs to find stuff she could eat. One soldier took great care to ensure she had food she could eat at every meal.

I can’t find super specific details... I bought some myself because we lose power all the time and we won’t get a generator until we remodel..
I have allergies too (spices which is a pain, coconut which is in every dang thing from toothpaste to soap to shampoo etc and lactose and wheat on alternative days, don’t know the days...etc.)
They have vegetarian ones, but they tend to be spicy which bam, nope for me... just hoping I can take enough steroids and antihistamines if I need them. Although recently a cup of tea through me over... crazy.

I’m familiar with those from times with disaster recovery. Some things/flavors are better than others. A two pack on Amazon is $25.

When I first went to an allergy/asthma specialist in my early 30s, my worst allergens were dust mites, dander, and wool. At the time, I was only mildly allergic to oranges and wheat and rarely experience symptoms from eating either. When I was retested about 10 years ago, molds were added to my allergy profile. This probably explains why I haven't liked "vinegary" foods like pickles, some olives, some mustards, some salad dressings, etc. They make me feel like I am gagging and/or I start to cough uncontrollably.

I developed lactose intolerance about 8 years ago, and it has been the bane of my existence. I haven't had milk to drink since high school, but I loved yogurt and haven't met a cheese I didn't like. I wasn't particularly addicted to ice cream, but cheesecake was my favorite dessert; I rarely have either these days. Now, I can't digest much dairy and really miss some of the foods that I enjoyed cooking and eating :( I always have Lactaid at home and in my purse, but sometimes, even that doesn't prevent a "lactose" episode (gas, bloating, diarrhea) When dining out, I avoid ordering anything with a dairy component because I can't predict how my digestive system will react. It saddens me to learn about so many people having serious food allergies that impact their daily lives.

ETA: This young man attended our local school district during DH's tenure on the school board. So sad.

did grocery pickup yesterday at Walmart
for the first time, they were out of a lot of things like Silk dark choco. almond milk which they wanted to substitute with plain almond milk ... um, no - I ordered choco for a reason
all the other substitutions I accepted but there were some things they just didn't have which is annoying cause I'm vegan and so there's less available substitutions
I still love the pickup process - just have to change my menu a bit for the week - and I still love the selection of vegan products - it's improving all the time everywhere

We need to get back to our gardening thread soon...what are you planning for planting? I am getting some cold frames and going to be starting seedlings soon.

Interesting that you mention spices. My youngest had a reaction last night that scared her. The only thing she could figure out was the can of tomato sauce ingredient list had “tomatoes, spices”. Nothing else and the rest of the dish was natural fresh food, not processed. It’s been 2 years since her last food panel test so now she has to go back again. This poor kid has such a small menu already. Sigh.

If Walmart can do grocery pickup for free, so can Costco. IMO

The groceries are often cheaper at Walmart, esp. if you buy from the flyers.

At our local Walmart, its nearly impossible to schedule a pick up time. Sometimes you have to schedule several days ahead.

Last March it was impossible but now, its about a 2 day wait. I order Sunday for Tuesday or Monday for Wednesday, then I get the flyer prices.

I haven't planned anything yet but I do know I want to start peppers early enough and just generally do a better job at everything lol. I don't have a cold frame. Should I get one? Remember I'm a beginner and was only really successful at the easy zucchini and tomatoes last year.

I live in a condo and did a few container plants last year. Lettuce, kale and a tomato. It gave me one good sized salad, lol. This year I am going to try and up my game. I also get a farm CSA box so my produce comes from a garden, just not mine.

I love hearing about your gardens and look forward to hearing about them.

Walmart pickup was terrible. Store is consistently out of items and got wrong items - which they require you to come in the store and take the items to the customer service desk. No thanks.

I won’t use Instacart because of things I observed either in the store or in the parking lot. Eating and then touching the groceries selected, putting the bags of groceries in back seat sandwiched between three young children who were putting their hands in the bags, pulling out items, etc. No masks on. No cleaning of hands, wipes, hand sanitizer.

The grocery stores here let maskless people shop - employees at the entrances don’t say a word if you don’t have a mask on. Don’t even offer them one.

We have 5 grocery stores close to home.
Only one offers curbside pickup. Of course, it is the highest priced store.

Curbside is nice for stock/standard items.
We use Walmart pick up. They provide an option for substitution. A couple of times I received incorrect items. The app. allows you to notify them of the error and receive a credit. I've never had to return the items that were sent incorrectly.

I think my problem with Walmart/app was trying to use it for different locations. I do food coordination/ordering for other family members besides myself and it gets a bit confusing combined with mental fatigue.

Dang my condo gardens were way more successful than my yard gardens... it annoyed my neighbors to have tomatoes all over... I got 6 foot plants easy. Make sure you get larger pots, and look up what likes to be together. They also need sun and a ton of water... we moved into a house and we got next to nothing as the chipmunks, deer and rabbits (despite a fence) managed to eat most everything.
