OMG- THANK YOU FOR THIS POST- I NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT THAT, I HAVE THOSE IN MY GIRLS WINDOWS, so does my neighbor. Ok BRB....
Keep in mind that, statistically speaking, your child is in more danger from a house fire than from disappearing.
The majority of children victimised by sexual abuse are abused by people within the household. Add in those children who are abused by someone not in the household but well known to the family and you're talking about the vast majority of victims.
Fires, though, are not deterred by relationships.
Last year, one of the two houses belonging to the people across the road burned down in the middle of the night (main farmhouse and a grandma house). They have a 3 year old and a 5 year old. They have more than one vehicle because, well, lots of farmers do.
The back house that burned was set way back from the road and over a sort of rise, so that it was not visible from the road, not even the roof. We didn't see the flames until they were shooting 20-30 feet into the sky over the roof.
My heart was hammering while the volunteer firefighters were risking their own lives going into a burning structure to search for possible victims. There was no one home but there was no way to know that. I didn't calm down until the count came back and everyone knew that all firefighters were out of the building (parts of the roof were collapsing at that point).
Sadly, the way their property was laid out, only one firetruck could be pulled up close to the house. I won't even try to describe it, it's just too complicated. The call had gone out to five departments that responded and there were plenty of trucks, but only one could get close. They ran three more hoses up from the road but still, it would have been better to have been able to get more trucks up to the house.
I sure said a lot of blessings to the sensible farmers who built my house 81 years ago because my driveway makes a U shape around my house. If I ever have a house fire, they'll be able to surround the house with firetrucks!
Even though the entire house was destroyed, no humans were hurt. And that was the most important thing.
