LATEST PRESS CONFERENCE

SUMMARY
(November 27, 2022)

On the evening of November 12th, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen were at a local bar called Corner Club at 202 N. Main Street, in downtown Moscow, between 10 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. on November 13th. At approximately 1:40 a.m., Kaylee and Madison were seen on video at a local food vendor called the “Grub Truck” at 318 S. Main Street and used a private party for a ride home from downtown to arrive at their 1122 King Road residence around 1:56 a.m. (Arrival time has been updated based on digital evidence collected by investigators.)

Investigators have determined that Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle were seen at the Sigma Chi house on the University of Idaho Campus at 735 Nez Perce Drive. At approximately 1:45 a.m., Ethan and Xana are believed to have returned to the residence at 1122 King Road. It was previously reported that Ethan resided at the home; however, it has been determined that he was only visiting.

Detectives believe that on November 12th, the two surviving roommates had also been out in the Moscow community, separately, but returned home by 1 a.m. on November 13th. The two did not wake up until later that morning.

On November 13th, the surviving roommates summoned friends to the residence because they believed one of the second-floor victims had passed out and was not waking up. At 11:58 a.m., a 911 call requested aid for an unconscious person. The call was made from one of the surviving roommates’ cell phones inside the residence. Multiple people talked with the 911 dispatcher before Moscow Police arrived at the location. Officers entered the residence and found two victims on the second floor and two victims on the third floor.

Autopsies were conducted on November 17th. The Latah County Coroner confirmed the identity of the four murdered individuals and their cause and manner of death as homicide by stabbing. The coroner stated the four victims were likely asleep, some had defensive wounds, and each was stabbed multiple times. There was no sign of sexual assault.

Just read the report that the police seized 5 cars that were parked at the front of the house. Few days ago I saw pictures of LE officers examining the cars in situ and now they took all cars away. Perhaps the police found same DNA of a person in both crime scene and one of more than one cars and that person was not any of the housemates nor their friends?

With LE saying the killings were “targeted”, could the motivation for the murders be political? Some extreme person wanting to make a “blanket” or generalized statement?

There has been much discussion about Murphy, the Golden Doodle, who was in the house and what he "should" have done. Golden Doodles are sweet-natured, loving, active, funny dogs. They aren't known for being fierce or protective. If a stranger entered the house, they would want attention and to be petted. In an effort to share a lighter moment during this horrible case, here is a video that I believe is of a Golden Doodle.

And wearing protective gear of some sort head to toe.IMO. PPE is lightweight and could easily be bundled up into a backpack. He could have just stood in a clean area, removed it, put booties on and fled outside in a flash and taken the booties off at a distance to avoid leaving footprints. Quick and easy.

Anecdotal and JMO

The DuPont Tyvek suits I have are not the quietest of materials. I am sure there are other options, but the white head to toe disposable suits are definitely not on the stealth attire list.

I wish LE and even the family would use the media to plead more on an emotional level to the killer.

Sounds silly but "talk" to the killer or people who surround him. Beg them to call in any tip if their brother, son, husband, co-worker, classmate sends out any actions or behavior that may be a concern or suspicious. Plead with people to pay attention. I know they have in a way, but LE could be more aggressive in getting people to look around them. JMO, MOO... Easier said than done though.

Maybe BAU thinks that is the wrong tactic to take with this killer. The killer might just get off on the begging b/c empathy clearly isn't his thing. That is something they'd consider. I can also see how that kind of extreme plea might put the people around him at risk.

Coroners are qualified doctors, qualified patologoanatoms. They MUST take the temperature of the body in situ, plus they MUST take the room temperature and check if the there are fixtures to switch on/off the heating system such as clocks and thermostats as the working heating may delay the decreasing of the body temperature of the deceased after they die.
Not in Idaho, no medical training is required. Edited to add, this is the case in many states.
You must be 21, a US citizen, a resident of the county for one year and take a coroner’s course within a year of being elected.
BBM
“However, if you run for the office, you must agree -- if you win -- to complete on a yearly basis at least eight hours of training in subjects including, but not limited to, Idaho coroner law as well as death investigations and protocol.”
Idaho coroner qualifications are downright basic

Here is Latah County’s government Coroner page which states all her duties at length.

how about latex or neoprene? could either of those be worn and wiped down between killings? they'd certainly seal in hair/skin, limit dna, protect from cuts and scratches.

There were police dogs at the scene, seen on pictures. The trained police dogs are more likely to react to the scent of perpetrator. The question is: did the perpetrator left an item at the crime scene which police identified as belonging to him and which could be used as a source of scent? Was description of a killer as being 'slopy' a reference that such item was indeed found at the crime scene?
Most importantly in this case was having the dogs search for traces of blood.
Unless it was microscopic there was no blood apparent outside the house in any of the multitude of photos

MOO:

The FBI might have the ability to analyze a large collection of cell phone data to determine if a particular cell phone was present at a certain location and then present later at the murder scene.

For example: all of he cell phones that were present in the bar that two victims were at earlier in evening could be determined, then the data from all of those phones looked at to see if one of these phones was also found to be present at or near the murder scene later in evening.

There would need to be a massive amount of analysis of cell phone location data. John Miller on CNN earlier in week had mentioned this as a possible effort that a special unit of the FBI would be able to undertake.

It's possible but no evidence shared publicly points in that direction except for it's absence.

Standard bedroom and bathroom doors have locks on the inside. (That may even be a city code requirement during the building or remodel process.) Having locks on the OUTSIDE of bedroom or bathroom doors would be kind of weird, not to mention a hazard.

The house was recently updated/remodeled. If you Google Images the address, you'll find some pictures from an old listing. The place looked really worn and outdated, sort of like what you'd expect of a college town rental. The upgrades to the house were a huge improvement.

Old listing: 1122 King Rd | Moscow, Idaho
New listing: 1122 King Rd, Moscow, ID 83843 | Zillow
Yet, the remodel didn’t bother to replace the first floor bedroom windows. Which are non-conforming for bedroom windows & have been for at least a couple of decades, at least here. Any renovations were done to replace things that couldn’t be cleaned anymore, or for cosmetics, not for safety :-(

Thinking of the incel angle. The killer may have brought more weapons with him too.

“Genco attended Army Basic Training at Ft. Benning, Georgia, from August through December 2019, said the DoJ.

Charging documents state that in 2019, Genco purchased tactical gloves, a bulletproof vest, a hoodie bearing the word "Revenge," a bowie knife, a skull facemask, two Glock 17 magazines, a 9mm Glock 17 clip, and a holster clip concealed carry for a Glock.”

They are definitely holding whatever cards they may have close to the chest/vest. I'm surprised there aren't more leaks or even information coming out from students or local Muscovites.
Local Muscovites don’t want to say/do anything to jeopardize a future prosecution. At least, those of us who treasure our community don’t. IMHO, of course.

Pretty sure this person is local. It's a cold place, but Idaho is a cold place.

I never heard of Moscow ID before this. So, I'm pretty sure the person is from the area.
It's fairly isolated.

I lived in Maine and everyone has all the winter gear, if you don’t have it thrift stores are full of it. With the right gear you’re not cold.
People who ski spend all day barreling down mountain snow and ice in sub zero temps. Night skiing is also a thing.
Hunters spend hours in freezing temps too, some even have snow tents and winter camp. Even in Alaska!
Idaho hunting season for Deer runs until Dec 24 and Elk until Dec 31. Bird hunting also runs late, quail until Jan 31.
Most northerners aren’t afraid of the cold.
