GUILTY IL - Carrie Olson, 29, Rock Island, 28 Dec 2013

http://qconline.com/archives/qco/display.php?id=689837we wrote about him before

A preliminary hearing for accused murderer Timothy McVay was postponed Tuesday for two weeks to give defense attorneys time to pore over hundreds of pages detailing the death investigation of Carrie Olson.

Mr. McVay, 39, of Rock Island, was led into a fifth-floor Rock Island County courtroom, wearing the customary yellow jumpsuit of a Rock Island County inmate.

Rock Island County State's Attorney John McGehee filed a request for a continuance. The hearing was rescheduled for 10:30 a.m., Aug. 12, to keep the case on Judge F. Michael Meersman's schedule.

Tim McVay, the man accused of killing Carrie Olson and trying to hide her body, appeared Friday in court, and the prosecutor says his trial likely will be postponed at least six weeks.

Rock Island County State's Attorney John McGehee spoke after McVay's appearance, saying the case continues to take a toll on the Olson family. "It's a very, very difficult time for them," McGehee said. "They're overwhelmed by this process. They're remaining strong."

Timothy McVay appeared in Rock Island County court this morning. He's charged with first degree murder of Carrie Olson and concealment of homicide...

Carrie Olson's family attended today's hearing as a trial date of February 17th was set.

Prosecutor John McGehee says the date is something he and the public defender have been working toward. He also says it's complicated since there will be three jurisdictions involved in the trial.

Thanks for the update OG. I was thinking about Carrie today.
I was trying to remember if they found her laptop and phone with her, or ever.

Attorneys for accused murderer Timothy McVay were granted a motion Monday that will allow public funds to be used for a re-examination of the original autopsy report on Carrie Olson's death, which the defense says hasn't been made clear...

Mr. Ruud said that without a second expert opinion, he and his defense team can't properly defend Mr. McVay because the autopsy lists Ms. Olson's cause of death as homicide by "unspecified means"...

McVay's trial is set to begin on Feb. 24.

Attorneys for accused murderer Tim McVay are seeking to have his case dismissed, saying the charges are the result of "overzealous" law enforcement agencies and "absurdly contorted" rumors...

On Thursday, Rock Island County State's Attorney John McGehee declined to discuss details of the motions, and said he believed prosecutors had a "strong case" and intended to proceed towards the Feb. 24 scheduled trial date.

A list of more than 200 witnesses the state may call at trial includes officers from several police agencies, criminalists, hospital representatives and officials from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office, which conducted Ms. Olson's autopsy. Other potential witnesses include people from Tobacco Outlet Plus, in Davenport; Fat Dawgs Karaoke, in Moline; and Four Queens Hotel in Las Vegas.

The cause of death as homicide by 'unspecified means' worries me. How can one die by unspecified means and rule it a homicide?

When they found her, it was noted if I can remember that the snow had kept her body pretty well preserved. They even noted that the body they found was only out there for weeks rather than months causing uproar. I’m surprised they couldn’t find anything at all during the autopsy to rule something a little more specific.
This whole case has been one mess after another. From the police waiting for TM to come back with Carrie’s car rather than going out to get him, to jurisdiction passing responsibilities back and forth; the parents knowing of Carrie being found through the media rather than the LE, public funding’s for the defense to reevaluate the autopsy. I hope the state has more than what we know and there will be justice for Carrie soon along with peace for her family.

Timothy McVay Trial Delayed

The trial for the man accused of murder in the death of Carrie Olson will be delayed. The bench trial was scheduled to start February 24, 2015.

Timothy McVay was in court Friday on motions to dismiss and suppress evidence. His attorneys presented their case to dismiss first. They say they have not received field notes regarding the case from investigators from the Davenport Police Department, who was the lead agency on the case until McVay was arrested, and Minnesota, where Olson’s body was found in April 2014.

“They’re trying to argue these field notes either were destroyed or they exist and it hasn’t been turned over. When in fact, everything has been turned over, there is every shred of information that has been garnered in this case has been turned over to the defense,” said Rock Island County State’s Attorney John McGehee.
A new trial date has not been set. A status hearing for McVay is scheduled for February 27, 2015 at 8:30 a.m.

A bench trial is scheduled to begin June 15 for the man accused of murdering Carrie Olson. Timothy McVay, 40, of Rock Island ,is charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death in Ms. Olson's death. She was reported missing on Dec. 30, 2013, and found dead on April 5, 2014, in Dakota County, Minn., about 300 miles northwest of the Quad-Cities.

Mr. McVay previously elected to have a bench trial, in which a judge, and not a jury, decides the verdict. Rock Island County State's Attorney John McGehee said his office has been working hard preparing for trial and plans to call a minimum of 45 to 50 witnesses, including investigators from Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota.

this trial starts tomorrow but because of a conflicting schedule, a forensic scientist has already testified this past wednesday! here is a story about her testimony............

Forensic scientist: Fibers in Olson's hair similar to McVay's carpet

A clump of fibers found in Carrie Olson's hair when her body was found in a wooded area of Minnesota is similar to carpeting found more than 300 miles away, in the home of Timothy McVay, according to testimony on Wednesday.

Trial starts Monday for Mr. McVay, 40, of Rock Island -- Ms. Olson's ex-boyfriend -- who is charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death. Ms. Olson, 29, was reported missing by her family on Dec. 30, 2013. Her body was found April 5, 2014, in Dakota County, Minn., with her death ruled a homicide "by unspecified means."

(snip)
Her testimony was the first evidence in a bench trial before Judge F. Michael Meersman that attorneys estimate may last two weeks.

Mr. McVay's attorneys have far raised no affirmative defense or legal justification, such as self-defense.

Rock Island County State's Attorney John McGehee said he has filed a list of about 80 potential witnesses to "anticipate what we think they (the defense) may be bringing up in trial." He said prosecutors may actually call only about 50 of those witnesses.

Sarah Walbridge-Jones, former forensic scientist with Minnesota Department of Public Safety, handles a sample of shag carpet as she testifies about forensic fiber analysis at the Rock Island County Justice Center on Wednesday, June 10, 2015. Ms. Walbridge-Jones was called to testify in the murder trial of Timothy McVay who is accused in the killing of Carrie Olson.

Opening arguments begin Monday in McVay murder trial

Opening arguments will begin Monday morning in the bench trial of Timothy J. McVay, who is accused of killing and concealing the body of his former girlfriend in late December 2013.

McVay, 40, is charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death of Carrie Olson, 29, of Davenport.

McVay waived his right to a jury trial earlier this year. Instead, Rock Island County Judge F. Michael Meersman will decide McVay’s fate.

On Wednesday, Meersman got a glimpse of the evidence that prosecutors say ties McVay to the murder of Olson, his former girlfriend.

Sarah Walbridge-Jones, a forensic scientist formerly with the Minnesota Department of Public Health, testified that she analyzed a clump of fibers found in Olson’s hair after police found her body on April 5, 2014, in a wooded area near Hastings, Minn.

Olson had been reported missing Dec. 30, 2014.
