MANSFIELD, LA (KSLA) - Jurors in the capital murder trial of Brian Horn saw disturbing and sexually explicit text messages Monday that prosecutors say were exchanged between 12-year-old Justin Bloxom and a twice-convicted sex offender in the hours before the boy's death in March of 2010.

Prosecutors say Horn posed as a 15-year-old girl, sending the text messages to set up a meeting with Bloxom and telling the boy that "she" was sending a cab driver to pick him up.
[.....]
Jurors also got a closer look at the taxi cab that the twice-convicted sex offender was driving when prosecutors say he lured Bloxom out of a friend's Stonewall home.

MANSFIELD, La. – Thirteen years has not dimmed the heartache of a Stonewall family who are being forced again to relieve the tragic death of a child.

Tears readily flowed Friday afternoon on the first day of the retrial of Brian Horn, 47, of Keachi. He’s charged with first-degree murder in the March 30, 2010 death of 12-year-old Justin Bloxom of Stonewall.
[.....]
No mention was made of that first trial during opening statements as the new trial got underway at 1 p.m. in Mansfield. Jurors selected in Vernon Parish are hearing the evidence for the first time.
[.....]
A box of Kleenex was passed to the jurors as some on the panel were wiping their eyes as John Witham Jr. took the stand as the first witness. The 28-year law enforcement veteran is Justin’s uncle.

He was at work with the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office when he got a call from his sister, Amy Bloxom, who is Justin’s mother, telling him Justin was missing. Witham went to Justin’s friend’s home in Stonewall where he was last seen to meet Bloxom and other family members there. Soon, he was summoned by retired Chief Deputy Pat Cobbs to get in his vehicle.
[.....]
Bloxom [Justin's mother], who had been seated on the front row clutching a photograph of Justin, was not in the courtroom during Witham's testimony. She and other family members were given the opportunity to leave prior to him taking the stand since photos of Justin's body would be shown to the jury.
[.....]
Another witness Friday was retired Capt. Brett Cooper. He gave insight on how the investigation unfolded and how Horn became a suspect. Cooper also was asked to identify photographs of the scene, which included Justin’s body in the slough, along with evidence that was collected there and from Kevin Horn’s truck.

16 hours ago (July 3, 2023) for Sunday.

MANSFIELD, La. – Melissa Welch was delivering newspapers early on the morning of March 30, 2010 when she saw a man in a green Action Taxi cab parked on the side of the highway in Stonewall.

As she made her route in the area and returned to U.S. Highway 171 she saw the same man coming up onto the side of the road from the woods. That was a little after 4 a.m.

The next time she saw the same man, he and his taxi were on the news. She called the DeSoto Sheriff’s Office.

Amador Santos also saw a man coming out of the woods where a taxi was parked on the highway.
[.....]
Welch and Santos were among more than a half-dozen witnesses Sunday afternoon who testified in day 3 of the first-degree murder trial of Brian Horn, 47, of Keachi. Horn faces a possible death sentence if convicted in the death of Justin Bloxom, 12, of Stonewall.
[.....]
Mary Washington was picking up newspapers at Kickapoo Corner, a convenience store at the corner of Highway 171 and Highway 5, when she encountered a man she identified as Horn. He wanted to use her cellphone.

Jap Washington, Mary’s husband, said he took Horn to where his cab was parked then to his home on Hall Road in Keachi, where he left him.
[.....]
Lauren Lindsey was 11 years old in March 2010. Now 26, Lindsey, who was friends with Horn’s stepdaughter, recalled for jurors a day when Horn asked to use her cell phone to download ringtones.

MANSFIELD, La. (KSLA) — Testimony is scheduled to resume Thursday morning in the sentencing phase of convicted child killer Brian Horn’s trial underway in DeSoto Parish.

Lawyers are to report to the DeSoto Parish Courthouse in Mansfield at 9 a.m. followed by jurors at 9:30 a.m.

Horn’s mother and a couple of people in the medical field are expected to testify for the defense.
[.....]
During questioning Wednesday, they revealed that Horn at some point took an 11-year-old girl’s cellphone under the premise of putting ringtones on it.

Prosecutors also said there’s zero evidence that Horn was mentally incapacitated, intoxicated or impaired at the time Bloxom was slain.

Bloxom’s mother, two brothers, a grandfather, an aunt and a cousin all testified for prosecutors Wednesday morning. Dustin, Bloxom’s best friend whose house he was at before going missing, also took the stand.
[.....]
Wednesday afternoon’s proceedings consisted of defense attorneys calling on a clinical psychologist from Tennessee to testify about brain development and the impact that being abandoned and/or neglected has on development of a child’s brain.

The psychologist never has interviewed Horn; nor has she ever gotten a brain scan of Horn. The doctor said she based her observations about Horn on police and court records and the fact that he scored very high on the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study.
