Irwin Gomez Colon, 31, has been arrested in connection with the April 24 murder of a mother found lying dead in her Terrytown apartment, Jefferson Parish court records show.

Gomez was booked with second-degree murder in the death of Nancy Yahaira Gonzalez Rodriguez, whose body was discovered about 11:30 a.m. inside her apartment in the 2100 block of Empire Place. Gonzalez, 33, of the Dominican Republic, died of stab wounds, said Jefferson Parish coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich.

Gomez is being held on $500,000 bond, court records show. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has scheduled a press conference at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (April 26) to discuss the investigation into Gonzalez's murder.


Gomez has a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 10.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand will give an update Wednesday on the investigation into the murder of a woman who was found dead in her Terrytown home.

Officials said Normand will hold a news conference at 3:30 p.m. in Harvey, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said.

Jhoel Ferrara is identified as husband per the Advocate (link on page 1). He said he was driving from Mississippi to gather the child. How horrifying for her son!

It's not the father, if previously reported name is correct. I'm heartened that the arrest was so quick.

They are saying in the presser that Gomez Colon lived across the street from Nancy. So he was a neighbor. They also believe the child may have been left alone for up to 30 hours.

In addition to being stabbed to death and choked, Nancy Yahaira Gonzalez was sexually assaulted before her body was found in her Terrytown apartment on Monday, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said.

Gonzalez's suspected murderer, Irwin Gomez Colon, is a Honduran national who was living in the United States illegally when he was jailed Tuesday. His residence was fewer than 70 steps from Gonzalez's front door, just across their apartment complex parking lot.

Aside from his 2015 arrest in connection to a rape case in New Orleans that was later dropped, Gomez had also previously been arrested on a drunk-driving charge. He was documented in Texas as an illegal immigrant in 2013 but the case did not result in his deportation, Normand said.
