LA - Nancy Gonzalez Rodriguez, 33, murdered, Terrytown, 24 April 2017 *Arrest*

Normand said there were signs that Gonzalez had fought for her life before she was stabbed more than 20 times and killed.

Gomez had lacerations to his right palm and upper right arm when investigators encountered him, Normand said.

Normand said Gonzalez was left alone with her unharmed 4-year-old son for more than 30 hours before she was found. A native of the Dominican Republic, Gonzalez was living in the United States illegally as well, Normand said.

Gonzalez's son is a U.S. citizen, having been born in Puerto Rico, Normand said. Normand said Gonzalez's ex-husband — the boy's father— is a U.S. citizen as well.

Yeh, I agree it had to be pre-meditated. So, why is he charged with 2nd degree murder? And this irks me:
New Orleans police jailed him on counts of first-degree rape, second-degree kidnapping and domestic abuse battery involving strangulation about two years ago, but prosecutors later dropped the charges.
Why were those charges dropped?! IMO, likely because his victim was afraid to testify. If sentences for violence against women and children were more severe, women would be more willing to testify. And that means don't give them a long sentence and then let them out in a couple of years for "good behavior." When they're released, their behavior tends to escalates.

A complex resident identifying himself as Carlos Hernandez said he saw Gomez emerge from Gonzalez's apartment about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Gomez appeared to be bleeding from his right arm, holding a folded white towel as he walked toward some nearby trash bins, Hernandez said.

Gomez later walked back to Gonzalez's apartment and remained there for a bit before returning to his own place, Hernandez said.
Sadly, I don't think the little boy was asleep the whole time. He must have heard his mothers screams. He was probably cowered away in a closet, poor little guy. :(

Colon has been arrested for crimes like this before, according to Normand. He has a history of domestic violence and claims he knew Gonzalez, though any connection between the two is unclear. Colon did live in the apartment complex across the street from Gonzalez's.

Gonzalez’s 4-year-old child is with the Department of Child and Family Services according to the Sheriff. They are still determining the best course of action for his immediate and long-term custody.

Normand also noted that Gonzalez was in the United States illegally as well and encouraged fellow undocumented immigrants to report crimes and work with police without fear of deportation.

“The fear of deportation is not a realistic fear in Jefferson Parish,” Normand said, when asked if victims or witnesses of crimes should fear police. “What’s important to us is the collection of the information that could lead to evidence or otherwise. Whether you’re a citizen or not … our ultimate goal is to catch the bad guys and have that lead to a successful prosecution by the DA’s office.”

Normand said Gonzalez was most likely killed sometime Sunday. He said she was stabbed more than 20 times and her body had signs of strangulation. He also confirmed she was sexually assaulted before her death.

Deputies said a witness reported Colon in the area when the homicide occurred. He was arrested after deputies executed a search warrant at his apartment in Terrytown. Normand said there was evidence found at his home in connection with the homicide.

I can't believe the neighbors didn't hear anything :(

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand also said investigators at the scene found evidence that led to a DNA match of Irwin Gomez Colon, 31, who was arrested Tuesday. A witness also saw Gomez leaving the apartment about the time of the murder, apparently bleeding from wounds in his hand and upper arm, JPSO said.

"He claims to have known her. Not very well. But does make a claim to having known her," Normand said. "Obviously, I think there are signs that she fought for her life. The purpose of strangulation and stabbing her in excess of 20 times is yet to be determined," he added when asked if it was a "crime of passion."

Detectives, after obtaining an arrest warrant April 25, found Gomez outside his home at 2109 Euclid St. Gomez, who agreed to be interviewed, said he knew the victim but said he hadn't seen her for weeks, Normand said. When questioned about the cuts on his right palm and upper arm, Gomez said that he got those while working on a construction site, according to JPSO. His employers and supervisors, however, did not back up his claims, Normand said.

Both of those go to first degree as he could have stopped. I don't get it.

That poor angel. I hope that his dad is a good man and doesn't have stuff in his background that prohibits him from getting his child back.

I am glad that he encouraged illegal immigrants to report what they know.
