Savio ruling could allow family to sue Drew
Estate move clears way for wrongful-death case

April 18, 2008
BY DAN ROZEK Staff Reporter

"Clearing the way for a possible wrongful-death lawsuit against Drew Peterson, a Will County judge Thursday reopened the estate of Peterson's deceased third wife, Kathleen Savio -- a legal move sought by her relatives.

"From our point of view, it's very positive,'' said Lawrence Varsek, one of the attorneys representing Savio's relatives.

But Varsek said the relatives are still exploring their options and won't move immediately to file a civil suit seeking to tie Peterson to his former wife's 2004 bathtub drowning."

Author: Peterson, Stebic may fit 'eraser' profiles

April 30, 2008

By JANET LUNDQUIST jlundquist@scn1.com

In her research of murders and mysterious disappearances of women, journalist Marilee Strong discovered a pattern.

Men were killing their partners, not for money or jealousy, but because the women were no longer convenient. Their relationships had no history of violence, but the women either vanished without a trace or were victims of staged suicides or accidents.

The men left behind are expert liars, she said. Manipulators who are hungry for attention.

Strong calls them "eraser" killings. Her book on the topic, "Erased: Missing Women, Murdered Wives," hit bookstores in March.

Fresh from covering the trial of Scott Peterson, the California man convicted of killing his pregnant wife, Laci, in 2004, Strong took note of Peterson's demeanor. Confident and narcissistic, Peterson fit the "eraser" profile.

After the trial, she researched similar crimes and missing person cases and discovered upward of 50 similar situations.

<<<<<<snip>>>>>>

"I can't say Drew Peterson or Craig Stebic absolutely fit this profile," Strong said. "But if Drew Peterson is responsible for not only Stacy's disappearance but also Kathleen Savio's death, it looks like he could have done both."

In some circumstances, the missing or dead women never get justice, Strong said.

"The most horrifying thing I've seen is there's a significant number of men who get away with it and go on to kill another partner or significant other," she said.

Drew Peterson Offers $25,000 Reward for Information Leading to Stacy’s Return

The $25,000 reward is for information that leads to the safe return of Stacy, says Joel A. Brodsky, Peterson’s criminal defense attorney. Brodsky says the reward money will be paid in addition to any other reward now being offered.
SNIP
Information and tips should be sent to
stacytips@yahoo.com. Brodsky says the tips will be opened and read by a team of investigators hired by Peterson, not by Peterson himself or his attorneys. He says all legitimate leads will be forwarded to law enforcement authorities.

Looking sad and weary, the father of a missing Bolingbrook woman appeared before a special grand jury Thursday, uncertain about whether his testimony could aid the investigation into her disappearance.

Stacy Peterson's father, Anthony Cales, said he testified for about 40 minutes and answered questions about his daughter's state of mind before she vanished Oct. 28. He said the jurors wanted to know if Stacy ever talked to him about marital problems and whether she would ever leave her children.

Joe Hosey's take on the grand jury meeting yesterday plus a couple of interesting tidbits:

Grand jury hears Stacy's father testify

""If Stacy comes back, we'll still be friends," he said. "And then everybody will be mad at her."

In an attempt to hasten this, Peterson has put up a $25,000 reward for information leading to her safe return. And the investment is already paying off in numerous tips, he said, including one that she was spotted at a Sandals resort in Jamaica.

"Peterson's neighbor, James Mitchem Jr., and his son, Kevin, also testified Thursday.

Mitchem, the principal of Bolingbrook High School, declined to discuss his appearance before the grand jury."

Missing, but not forgotten
Fundraiser, flowers show support for search to find Stacy Peterson

"A front yard on Pheasant Drive in Bolingbrook is filling up with flowers and candles in tribute to missing mother Stacy Peterson.

But the front yard is not the address of Peterson, who disappeared Oct. 28. It is the yard of Sharon Bychowski, her neighbor and employer.

"I was in London when Princess Diana died, and this reminds me of that," Bychowski said recently, as more and more people arrived to place bouquets of flowers to honor the missing woman as the sixth-month anniversary of her disappearance approached."

"Throughout the neighborhood, people have tied blue and pink ribbons on trees to honor Stacy Peterson.

"Stacy is full of life. People were happy to be around her. She is an amazing 23-year-old," said Bychowski, who is one of four directors of the Friends of Stacy Peterson Family Fun-Raiser set for 5 to 9 p.m. May 10 at Ditka's Sports Dome & 46 Zone Bar and Grill at 730 N. Route 53 in Bolingbrook.

The event will include contests, tournaments, a silent auction, music and more, Bychowski said. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children 6 to 12 years old. Ticket information is available online at www.groovetickets.com. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go benefit the search for Stacy."

Drew Peterson was in such a hurry to pick up a 22-year-old female friend who needed a ride over the weekend that he got stopped for speeding by Naperville Police.

But the former Bolingbrook Police officer avoided a ticket, instead receiving a warning after being curbed about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the western suburb.

FUN-Raiser to fund search for Peterson

May 7, 2008
By JOE HOSEY jhosey@scn1.com

"BOLINGBROOK -- A group dedicated finding missing mom Stacy Peterson will raise money on Mother's Day weekend to search for.

"We're doing it on the weekend of Mother's Day to honor Stacy and all the other great mothers just like her," said Sharon Bychowski, Stacy's best friend and next-door neighbor.

Saturday's "FUN-Raiser" at Ditka's Sports Dome & 46 Zone Bar and Grill will feature contests, tournaments, various auctions and raffles, and music.

Tickets for the event at the 730 N. Bolingbrook Drive entertainment and recreation facility are $25 for adults and $10 for children. A two-adult, two-child "family fun pack" costs $65.

Proceeds from the event will help pay for the volunteer search effort for Stacy Peterson, the young mother who vanished Oct. 28. The state police have named Stacy's husband, former police Sgt. Drew Peterson, their sole suspect in the case, which they have classified a "potential homicide."

Drew Peterson's Attorney Recommends Legal Council For Ex

WHEATON, Ill. -- The daughter of Drew Peterson's second wife and the sister of his third wife appeared Thursday before the grand jury investigating the third wife's death and his fourth wife's disappearance.

State police initially found no indication of foul play in connection with Savio's death. Their opinion was contradicted in November after a forensic pathologist performed additional tests on her remains and concluded she was the victim of a homicide.

Peterson's attorney, Joel Brodsky, claims Maniaci and Savio broke off their relationship the weekend before she was found dead.

Judge: No guns for Drew Peterson

May 13, 2008

BY DAN ROZEK Staff Reporter

"Drew Peterson won't be getting back 10 guns authorities seized last year, but his police officer son appears likely to end up with the weapons, Peterson's attorney said today."

"A Will County judge signaled during a hearing that he appears ready to order police to relinquish the guns taken during a search of Peterson's Bolingbrook home last fall after the disappearance of Peterson's third wife, Stacy.

"This court is of the opinion the state cannot withhold the firearms indefinitely," said Judge Richard Schoenstedt, who deferred a formal ruling until later this month on the request by Peterson for the release of the guns."

""There's no compelling need to return these items to a family member of Drew Peterson in the middle of what could be a murder investigation," prosecutor John Connor argued during the hearing.

Peterson's attorney Joel Brodsky, though, said the judge's comments "indicate very strongly" that he plans to order the weapons be released to Peterson's son.

"Based on what the judge said, I'm fairly certain," Brodsky said after the hearing."

The Chicago Tribune story of today's hearing:

Drew Peterson may be allowed to transfer his guns to son
Ex-cop may be allowed to transfer ownership to son Ex-cop suspected in wife's disappearance awaits transfer ruling

"Brodsky and Abood on Tuesday argued there is no evidence the guns are connected to Stacy's disappearance or Savio's drowning, and they should not be treated unlike other items the judge ordered police to return.

"They're his property—valuable property worth around $10,000," Brodsky said. "The fact that these are guns doesn't make them more than property."

Assistant State's Atty. John Connor countered that Schoenstedt should abide by his initial ruling and said the state does not intend to hold the weapons indefinitely.

"It's not a question of forever—it's a question of whether this is the right time," Connor said. "The bottom line is [Peterson] cannot have possession or enjoyment of these firearms at this point, so what is the value of returning them to family members?"

Schoenstedt said he would issue his decision May 22."

and:

"Meanwhile on Tuesday, State Police Sgt. Thomas Burek said authorities remain confident the Stacy Peterson case will be solved.

"We're real comfortable in the way it's moving," he said. "We are confident that there will be an arrest."

Last fall, more than five dozen state police investigators were assigned to the case, and Burek said the size of the team remains the same.

Though he would not reveal where investigators have searched or are searching, Burek said there are no plans for major water searches."

CHICAGO -- An autographed Cal Ripken Jr. baseball cap goes for about $280. Somebody on eBay wants at least a grand for a hat signed by Drew Peterson.

Bids for the "Authentic Autographed Drew Peterson Today Show Cap" was slated to open at $1,000 -- but Wednesday, the hat's first day on the block, no one had stepped up with the money to get in on the auction.

A sister of Drew Peterson’s deceased third wife testified Thursday before the grand jury investigating Kathleen Savio’s death and the disappearance of Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy.

Savio’s sister Anna Doman confirmed she had testified but declined to comment any further as she left the Will County Court Annex building Thursday.

Finally, the Chicago Tribune story:

Kathleen Savio's sister testifies before grand jury

"Anna Doman declined to comment afterward about her testimony, which lasted about three hours."

"Also appearing before the grand jury was Rich Berg, a Bolingbrook patrol officer. Berg referred all questions to Illinois State Police. Sgt. Thomas Burek of state police said he could not comment."
