The Oxford school district is moving forward with plans to remember four high school students who died in a mass shooting Nov. 30 and "help with the grieving process" of students and staff.

In a message Friday on the district's website, Oxford Community Schools Superintendent Ken Weaver said a banner in the gym and a sign in the senior courtyard will serve as remembrances of Hana St. Juliana, 14; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; and Justin Shilling, 17.

"All of us should honor the lives of these four students through our actions to serve our community going forward," Weaver wrote. "This way the impact that these children had on our school community will carry on for others to follow."...

A school safety and security expert is expected to address the Oxford Board of Education Tuesday night amid demands from parents for the school district to begin an independent investigation into last year's mass shooting.

Late Monday, Oxford Community Schools Superintendent Ken Weaver posted a message on the district's website that said the district in late December began working with an independent security consultant, Secure Education Consultant, to review the district’s policies, procedures and physical operations as they relate to safety, security, and emergency preparedness.

Weaver said SEC is an expert in the field of emergency planning and its founder and president, Jason Russell, has been collaborating with the district to develop strategies for the district to continue to improve the safety and security of its schools...

It looks like the school admin. is trying -- the barn door was open, as we saw, horribly, but at least they are trying to make things better and more secure.

Sad to ask, but where will the next shooting occur? SMH.

An independent review of Michigan's deadliest school shooting at Oxford High School will not be conducted until criminal and civil litigation is over, Oxford school board president Tom Donnelly announced Tuesday.

Donnelly also said Oxford Community Schools will again decline an offer for a third-party review from Attorney General Dana Nessel of the Nov. 30 mass shooting that killed four students. Six students and a teacher were wounded.

"Given the nature and the breadth of the current criminal and civil proceedings, the review of the tragedy and associative events of Nov. 30, 2021, will not occur until the criminal and civil litigations are complete," Donnelly said Tuesday during a school board meeting. "Once the litigation process is completed and all information has risen to the surface, a team of experts will conduct a third-party review. Our subcommittee has begun the process of vetting.”...

Nonsense! The litigation of the various lawsuits could go on for years. Seems like the Oxford Board of Education will do whatever they can to avoid accountability in the horrific shooting  JMO

Considering appeals and delays that happen in the course of litigation, the school board just punted the third-party review to ten or twenty years down the road.

...The school district declined her initial offer in early December of 2021. Back then, Nessel said she has a team that is willing to step in and conduct a full comprehensive investigation of the events leading up to the shooting.

Part of the investigation would be into if any policies or protocol were not followed and would go further than the investigation conducted by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

“The school board’s unwillingness to partner with my department on this effort flies in the face of transparency,” Nessel said after the latest rejection. “The rejection sends a message that the board is more focused on limiting liability than responding to the loud outcry from the Oxford community to deliver greater peace of mind to the students, parents and educators that lived through this traumatic event.”...

If there is a loud outcry from the Oxford community, why are there no petitions circulating to recall the Board of Education? The entire school board should be replaced with people who want to get to the bottom of this horrific incident. The current Board of Education prefers to sweep the tragic events of November 30, 2021 under the rug and hope that the community forgets about it over time. Parents in the Oxford Community Schools deserve better than this gang of seven playing CYA. JMO

Hoping that the Attorney General can investigate with or without the board's permission. The people of the school district, at the very least, should start -- if they haven't already -- raising he!! and demand that the AG get involved.
This is starting to smell bad IMO.

Oxford Township — Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald on Thursday weighed in on the prospect of an independent, third-party review of the deadly Nov. 30 Oxford High School shooting and says "there is no reason" to delay such a review.

McDonald's office shared the letter Friday.

Oxford Community Schools officials said earlier this week that no independent review of the shooting could be done until all the criminal and civil litigation is resolved. That could take years. Years that would pass before the independent review could even start...

Oxford school officials are considering hiring a law firm to represent the district in investigations, reviews and litigation connected to the Nov. 30 school shooting at Oxford High School.

The Oxford Community Schools Board of Education scheduled a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Oxford Middle School to discuss a contract proposal with Varnum Attorneys at Law in Grand Rapids.

"We are pleased that the Oxford Community Schools Board of Education ... has chosen to engage our firm to represent it, and provide counsel, in connection with investigations, reviews and litigation arising out of or in connection with the tragic occurrence at the Oxford high school on November 30, 2021," attorney Ronald G. Thanks for your always good info, BDE.
Hmmm, is this what is done in a situation like this -- IANAl, so have no clue. The BoE should certainly know what their rights, duties, and obligations are, so maybe this is the right thing for them to do. Or, is there more to this than meets the eye?
This type representation can't come cheaply -- who/what will pay for it?
