Do you have a source or a link for this that you can provide for us? I know many here would love to see this case solved and I am personally very interested if these murders can be linked to other murders and/or other violent crimes in the area. Thanks in advance.

A judge has ordered a psychiatric examination for Herbert Notch, 18, rural road St Cloud, who is accused of kidnapping and attacking a 14 year old.
Stearns County District Judge Paul Hoffman directed Thursday that the examination be conducted at the State Security Hospital in St. Peter.
Notch and James Wagner, 17, Sauk Rapids, who was ordered to stand trial as an adult, are charged with attempted murder, rape, robbery and kidnapping.
A 14 year old St Cloud told authorities she was abducted Sept, 25 from a grocery store where she worked, driven to a rural area, and raped.

Will search more when able

These are among the parallels considered by investigators when they look at this other crime involving Mr. X and the murder of the Reker sisters:

Both Mary Reker and the victim of Mr. X were very close in age both were stabbed with similar small knives.

In each case the teenaged-girl’s sweater was sliced up the middle and left on the body. And in each case her bra was cut and removed. In each case her panties were cut and removed. And in each case her under garments were thrown in a lake.

In the case of the Reker girls their bodies were hidden. Mary was dumped in a lake. Her little sister, Susan, was dragged into tall grasses.

Mr. X and his accomplice carried their victim to a place where she was covered with branches and leaves.

If there was one significant difference in the cases it was that the victim of Mr. X survived.]

Neither Herbert Daniel Notch (Mr. X) or his accomplice, James A. Wagner, are on the Minnesota sexual offender database. I could find no online record that they even served any prison time for the murder and rape of the victim who survived. The Minnesota prison database apparently does not include former inmates.

Notch worked at Zayre Shopper City, where the girls were last seen, which was located at 33rd Avenue and Division Street in the Plaza West Shopping Center. He also lived near the shopping center in the 200 block of 1st Ave North.

According to US Search and other informational databases, Notch, Jr. last lived or currently lives in Montevideo, MN. Online records show he also uses his father's middle initial; (A).

His picture sent chills down my spine! I also can't find any court proceedings for them,
knowing James middle initial should help as there are many Wagners in Minn.

Is there any crime scene/DNA that could link them to the rekers?

I think I found Wagner's birth date 1 Sept 1959 on Familysearch. Not positive though. I'm not aware of any DNA evidence.

He would not be in the sex offender base if he committed crimes before it was established?

That's the thing. There are no online archived news articles stating when they went to prison. Someone would have to go to a local library to read it on microfilm.
 
Just realised it may not be the correct Mary Reker as it is 1975 book, however there is also a 1974 book with her name. Also Worthington is 191 miles from St Cloud, so unlikely she went there? The Jim Wagner could be a connection though.

I did find some info on Notch being convicted and didn't bookmark it! might take me while to dig it up again.
 
Here is Notch's criminal history in MN according to MN Judicial Branch. The sex assault case was dismissed???
