Investigators said they're confident that the remains and artificial hip belong to Erwin, but a forensic pathologist will examine them to make a final determination.

The same car was pulled from an area lake earlier this month after YouTuber and drone pilot James Hinkle spotted it during his own hunt for the missing man, a nearly year-long journey he has chronicled on his popular channel “Echo Divers.”

“Wow Brother. What a special Christmas this is. Even though you’re not with us, we know where you are now and we can rejoice because of it. I love you brother and I miss you terribly, but I know it was God’s will that brought you to us and I know you are no longer in pain,” Erwin’s sister, Yvonne Erwin-Bowen, wrote on Facebook following the news.

Detectives are still working to uncover how Erwin ended up in the water when he was making an early morning cigarette run 10 years earlier.

The 2002 Hyundai Elantra was pulled from a lake after YouTuber James Hinkle spotted it during his own hunt for the missing man.

Sad news, but at least the family will now have closure.

IMHO whenever a person(s) & their car are both missing and they were known to have been driving near a river/lake/etc., there is at least a chance that their disappearance has something to do with the proximity to the body of water.

A freelance videographer had been using a drone over the property to search for Erwin’s remains when they found the car. They contacted the property owner with their discovery.

Later that day, Camden County deputies and crews from the Mid-County Fire Protection District Dive Team went to the pond to investigate. There, they matched the license plate on the car to the plate of Erwin’s missing Hyundai Elantra.

The car was removed from the pond that day and Erwin’s family was notified.

Using pumps on loan from the Missouri Department of Conservation, the FF14 Volunteer Fire Department and a pumper truck from the Mid-County Fire Protection District investigators drained the pond and recovered what we believe to be the rest of Mr. Erwin's remains. Mr. Erwin's family was notified of the discovery.

It has taken ten years to recover Mr. Erwin's remains, and it would not have been possible without the hundreds of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and volunteers who helped conduct searches all over the country.
