New Absolut Vodka Ad

I anxiously await the map they will produce for their Middle East distributors. Much hilarity will ensue, I'm sure.

And as usual, I make an azz out of myself by posting before I finish reading all the comments.

MEXICO CITY - The Absolut vodka company apologized Saturday for an ad campaign depicting the southwestern U.S. as part of Mexico amid angry calls for a boycott by U.S. consumers.
------
"In no way was it meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues," Absolut said in a statement left on its consumer inquiry phone line.

Hmmm, the ad simply depicts the historical boundaries of Mexico when the Spanish colony was at the zenith of its territorial expansion just prior to losing the Oregon Territory (which comprised British Columbia, Washington State, Oregon and part of northern California) to the British. So what the ad means to convey is "in an Absolut world Mexico would still be that huge country". It's not a map of a planned expansion and has nothing to do with illegal immigration as many of the areas on the map have very little Mexicans living there and some of the areas where they are living in numbers are not on the map.

It's an AD. For alcohol. It's right for the audience they were targeting. The ad has nothing to do with illegal immigrants or immigration. It's simply stating that for Mexicans, this is what the map would look like in an "Absolut" world.

I can't believe the things that people distort and get angry about.

Jen, I have to disagree. This ranks right up there with the stupid Quizno dancing rats as one of the worst possible marketing campaigns.

For goodness sakes, they offended an entire country. Was there no one in the organization that could have predicted that this might be viewed negatively.

I'm still traumatized by the stupid rats dancing and trying to sell me sub sandwiches.

Too little too late, I'd say.
Absolout and the ad campaign knew exactly what they were doing.

I never said it was a smart campaign or one that I liked. I was just stating that it has nothing to do with what some people are saying. Again, it's just an ad. I may or may not like it, but I'm not going to get my feathers in a ruffle over a stupid marketing campaign.

And dear heavens, yes. That was a horrible ad campaign by Quizno's. "Hey! I know what will sell our sandwiches! RATS!" Duh. But, I didn't infer from that they wanted rats to take over the world.

LOL!   Excellent analogy, Jen!

I'm not offended.

People need to stop being so sensitive about everything.

I'm not offended either. I thought is was a clever campaign and certainly got people talking.

I am, however, offended that Absolut sells a crap product for $20 a bottle and try to trick people into thinking it is a high grade vodka.

I think it's an awesome ad for the target audience. I'm with Jen and Truly on this, of course I'm married to one of those people. (you know, a Mexican, shhhh!)

ITA. I am much more offended by "fashion" ads that are virtually pornographic and are pitched toward young'uns. I walked past an Abercrombie and Fitch today. Might as well have bought a copy of Blue Boy.

Yeah, or like the customers that complain about an indecent nursing mother in Build a Bear when right across the way are the eight foot soft *advertiser censored* Victoria's Secret posters.

Oh thank the Lord. I thought I was the only one who wasn't the least bit offended by this ad. I've always loved their ads.

I do agree it's crappy vodka, though, Masterj!!!

If Mexico were to gain this land, I think that would only make the trek longer for the illegals. You'd just be moving thier border more north, they'd still be crossing it to settle in the US.
I don't believe in the reconquista movement. Yes, there are crazy mexican lunatics who think US stole their land. But that would me like me believing that all white folks are KKK. They exist, but sane people don't pay attention to them.

Awesome post!
