The first photographs from inside the hotel room used by Stephen Paddock during his killing spree show the fire power he used to kill 59 people in Las Vegas.
...
A second picture obtained by Boston25 News shows an assault rifle, abandoned on the carpet, fitted with a bipod and scope. Dozens of spent cartridges show the intensity of the attack. And a hammer, possibly used to smash the suite's corner windows, can be seen clearly.

Can't get the pictures to post here, sorry!

I just got a thought that makes me MAD (well, this whole thing makes me mad, of course).

This guy seems to get off on living a secret life - just like his father did.

Nobody knows much about him - but he was a big-stakes gambler, had planes, multiple pieces of real estate, hunting licence. If I listed those activities as a description of someone, you might picture a flashy guy, sharp dresser, smart looking. But the guy is a slob and today we read descriptions that he appeared like a slob at court (during his suit against the casino). I think he really liked being opposites, hard to figure out, "big" but yet in the background.

What makes me mad is I bet you he wanted everyone to be baffled by his motive. He wanted to keep his motive secret to his grave, like a big, slovenly, selfish jerk. I WANT TO KNOW WHY HE DID THIS just to spite him, if nothing else.

Keep working, WSers!

I’ve been thinking he wanted to be more infamous than his father.

Not sure there's really any way to prevent people from turning into psychopaths. Providing universal access to affordable health care, including mental health, from cradle to grave will allow more families and people to manage psychological and organic mental illness. Even better to do all we can to ensure psychopaths have as little access as possible to weapons of mass murder.

Problem is a lot of these people fly under the radar or people that live with them are oblivious or don't realize that there are mental health concerns. I live in Canada where we have universal health care and it's not a fix. You cannot force an adult to get mental health help unless they are a danger to themselves or others and they can be arrested under the mental health act. From there they are taken to the hospital for an assessment but they aren't forced to go to a counsellor or to take meds.

Very surpirsed we havent heard more about this. The woman was with her mother and she was pretty specific in the on-air interview. I am thinking perhaps the coward was partying with some people earlier in the weekend and let his plan spill? Too much of a coincidence for me.

I mean, obviously there are a few people who could confirm (like the security who supposedly escorted these Hispanic women out), but I'm wondering if this is more of a Tania Head situation. Maybe they're attention seekers. I hope that doesn't seem too victim blamey, but until someone else steps up to corroborate I'm going to hold off on latching onto this story.

So was it a fully automatic or not? This article says something about the recoil allowing for it to act "almost" like a fully automatic.

The part is available for as little as 99 bucks. IMO they are off the shelf for good due to this freak.

My understanding is the device allows the firearms to fire at the rate of a fully automatic gun.
Experts believe an accessory known as a bump-stock was probably used in the attack. It modifies a semi-automatic weapon to fire at an automatic rate.

Am I the only one who finds it odd that this man lived 64 years but there are only 3 pictures of him? We haven't even seen a driver's license picture. I can't help but feel that there's a lot we don't know and never will know about him.

YES! I have been wanting to comment on this from the beginning! One pic with eyes closed in a bar and one pic that looks 20 years old! I mean, this dude had a drivers license, a pilots license and won a car at a casino. All of those things have photos. Her photo looks like a drivers license photo. So, why isn't his shown?

Which brings me to my next subject. I think I saw back there somewhere that his drivers license may have been expired (sorry no link, too many articles). So, if so, how has he been renting rental cars? That is definitely a place that checks your license. So much is not adding up with this dude. So much!

Well said, KMouse. I don't think Universal health care is the end all, either. It would help in many areas, but mental health is a tricky one, as those who need it most, often, will not seek help.

IMHO

Not to mention, traveling by air, which he supposedly did. TSA requires a photo ID.

Many things are not adding up, here.

Yes, in "bump fire" a semi automatic weapon can simulate fully automatic. Its a little hard to explain, but essentially you hold your finger still in the trigger guard and push the weapon forward with your other hand and keep pushing forward. This pushes the trigger into your finger, firing the weapon. The recoil pushes the gun back resetting the trigger, but your pushing with the other hand pushes the weapon back forward into the trigger finger, and the process starts over. What you get is simulated automatic fire. A "bump-stock" is a devise that fits on where a normal stock is that facilitates "bump fire." The problem with bump fire is that its virtually impossible to aim the weapon with any degree of accuracy since both hands are used to fire the weapon.

I believe the article said his Texas driver's license was expired so he could have a current license out of Nevada.

It does not.

I have fired fully automatic weapons in the military. One of my friends is also a fire arms enthusiast. He encouraged me to fire a weapon with such a device once- I had little interest in it, but to be polite, I accepted his offer. It basically doubled the rate of semi automatic fire (already pretty fast), but did not approach fully automatic rate.

As a side note, the device takes practice to get used to and my general impression is that some, or many ranges forbid using the devices as they can be a control issue. Thus, the shooter may have sought out a range where the devices can be used.

Agree. Families aren't to blame in these situations, unless they've witnessed some obvious, dangerous criminal activity prior to the crime. Most criminals are secretive about their planning. OTOH, I'm not sure how Paddock's significant other could have missed seeing him acquire massive amounts of ammo and explosives. Perhaps, but it doesn't seem likely. Instead of running away to another country, she should have reported it. Not saying she's to blame, but it's possible she could have prevented it.

If she reported it, what on earth could LE have done? He'd not broken any laws. We don't know that he had items for bomb making while she was still here, and according to the gun shop, where he bought his firearms, he passed the the requirements every time. What would they do? He legally purchased his firearms.

You only need one gun, to do what he did and the newly released (2014) 3MR trigger. It sells for around $500 and makes a semi into a nearly full automatic. Tactical Fire Control, the mfg., has a copy of the ATF letter certifying their 3MR trigger as a non-NFA semi-auto trigger. So the trigger is legal. Here's the link and the video. (The video is also within the article).

You can see in the video that it is pretty close to a full automatic after flipping the switch.

Of course there's no panacea for mental health problems in large populations, but many dangerous criminals exhibited symptoms of mental or psychological disorders in childhood, a time when professional intervention could help. Better to have as few of those people as possible reaching adulthood with no treatment. No public health intervention works 100%, but is usually done to at least prevent problems in as many people as possible. Not sure how we can talk about "prevention" without discussing access to intervention, but then I'm not a believer in social Darwinism.

This video poker, I thought with those stakes and the description of him as being fairly known in the field, meant that it was playing other players long-distance rather than in the same room as opposed to an AI game like slots? Not that slots is AI, but I know what I mean...a computer opponent rather than people opponents.

I can imagine someone being a pro player and having a tendency to winning if they're playing against people, but surely AI games are those where the house always wins, so any wins will be countered by slightly greater losses if you play for long enough?

Or are you saying that playing against humans requires comprehension of human emotions/behaviour and that understanding the computer algorithm is easier for a mathematical mind than reading a human?

But either way, someone might attempt to break down people into algorithms, and to an extent it can work, for instance with crowd behaviour?

BBM
That's what I thought too. I've watched some of those and they can get intense (at least for me anyway).

Card counting works with blackjack, not video poker.

Video poker has only a small house advantage if you find the right machine and play the optimum strategy.

Okay, I'm feeling stupid. When I read about video poker yesterday, I thought it was something he did at home, online. Now I'm catching on that video poker is a game that is played at the casino. Right?

I'm not a gambler - never saw the appeal in it - so I'm a bit slow at following!

You bring up a good point. We've rendered LE nearly powerless in dealing with dangerous people who stockpile weapons, ammo and explosive materials. While its difficult for LE to deal with a single lone wolf who kills with one gun, its another matter when they're powerless to deal with people exhibiting abnormal behavior while accumulating large amounts of dangerous weapons.

In the case of this killer, the roommate should have gone to LE, allowing them to at least put him on their radar, have a discussion with him, etc. It seems kind of crazy when LE can kill an innocent person who makes a wrong move during a traffic stop, but can't do anything about a madman with a garage full of automatic assault weapons and explosives.

No you're not the only one. When the Boston Bombers blew up people at the marathon their lives were combed over including their family. We got treated to multiple pictures of them and various family members ad nauseum. Including childhood pictures of the bombers.

With this man, there's very little. Sure is odd IMO. I expected more pictures.

I attribute this to his age. He is 64 years old, some people of that age engage with social media and have a social media footprint, but many many do not. When I think about some of my relatives that age, they have no SM accounts and almost no internet presence or footprint other than property records etc. Also, he had no children at all. If he did, then maybe they would be posting family photos of him on their accounts.

He had a 62 year old girlfriend, even her Facebook was sparse. I think she had 6 friends. His marriages and divorces were all also pre social media era. It does not appear that he was very close to his family so that would explain the lack of photos OF him by others on the internet. (He didn't speak to one of his brothers for 20 years and 2 brothers stated they are not close and the third brother has not been located) I don't find it strange at all. An older man who didn't have kids, who lived a non-traditional way and who didn't seem to be very rooted down. His brother states that he largely lived in hotels because he lived to gamble and most of his properties were void of furniture, belongings, and anything else that a home would have.

The Boston Bombers were young and millennials, they would have been practically weened on social media as would all of their peers, who would have also have SM photos posted of them.

Marilou has a beautiful, successful daughter who lives in CA. She is an artist. She is probably devastated about this.Makes me less suspicious of her mother.jmo
