Father Dismisses Link Between Missing Woman and Rape Suspect
The father of a missing Fairfield woman says he does not believe a man arrested for an Oxford rape had anything to do with his daughter's disappearance-even though the man worked right across the street from where his daughter lived.
Art student Katelyn Markham vanished from her Fairfield condo on August 13th, 2011. Her car was still in the condo lot. Her keys, purse and dog still inside. There was no sign of a struggle. The only thing missing was Katelyn and her cell phone, which has never been found.

Woman’s disappearance still a mystery one year later

One year ago today was the last day Katelyn Markham was seen alive. At 12:52 a.m. on Aug. 14, 2011, her fiance John Carter received a picture of Markham on his cell phone. It was three days before her 22nd birthday.
That was the last anyone ever heard from her. Now, a year after she vanished from her Dorshire Drive apartment, she is still missing, to the dismay of her family and friends, even though Fairfield police continue to follow leads.

Katelyn Markham found dead after 20 months
During the past 20 months, any time an unidentified body surfaced in Ohio, Indiana or Kentucky, Fairfield investigators probed whether the remains were Katelyn Markham’s, said Fairfield Police Chief Mike Dickey.
But the investigation shifts into new territory, Dickey said, now that Indiana State Police have verified that the remains found along a Franklin County creek belong to the 21-year-old woman who vanished in August 2011.

As hearts break, mystery of Markham's death deepens
The bones were scattered around a tree about 30 yards from the west bank of Big Cedar Creek. A skull wrapped in clumps of a woman’s brown hair was concealed in a black plastic sack, the kind you find at the local grocery store.
That was the gruesome discovery Andy Hicks and his wife Natalie of Brookville made early Sunday in Cedar Grove, Ind., as they scoured for scrap metal to help pay their bills.
“After we found the jawbone we called the cops,” Andy Hicks, 35, said Thursday as he stood near the creek in the rain.

Police to begin piecing together Markham mystery again

The “Missing Woman” posters that hung in Fairfield business windows Thursday no longer represented the hope that a young Fairfield woman with a bright future who vanished two summers ago would return home safely.
Instead, Fairfield and Indiana State police will begin the process of piecing together what happened to Katelyn Markham after her skeletal remains were found Sunday in Cedar Grove, Ind., about 30 miles west of Fairfield.
“We have had hope that she was going to come home all along, and we believed very strongly in that,” said Karyn Winkler, the mother of Markham’s fiancé, John Carter. “Now we know — and we have the relief of knowing — she’s been with God this whole time. But that’s the only relief we have.”

Memorial erected for Fairfield woman

A four-foot wooden cross erected at the spot where Katelyn Markham’s remains were found in April serves as a memorial to the 23-year-old Fairfield woman and a symbol of closure for her family and friends, even as they await answers from police investigators about how she died.
The handcrafted cross with a metal plaque inscribed with the words, “Lost Is Not Alone. No Longer Lost, Never Alone,” was placed last month by her father David Markham along Big Cedar Road in Franklin County where the missing woman was found. He was aided by friends and family who searched for Katelyn for months after she disappeared from her Fairfield condominium in August 2011.
