SC - Five law enforcement officers injured, 2 dead, Florence, 3 Oct 2018 *Arrest*

So it seems the old man was willing to shoot 7 police officers to protect one 27 year old possible sexual assaulter?

God help us all if these seven officers were shot because the suspect was protecting a possible sex abuser.

And what if that allegation turns out to be false? It is probably not false, but the home may not have been a pleasant one for foster kids.

There is a picture of the large family, in the article, where they are all wearing red, with one in a pink/red color. There were other large families that dressed alike, with threads here, the Turpins and the Harts. The stay-at-home dad has a military background and posted a lot about it. If he ran his home like a boot camp, a foster kid might come up with something, that would be sure to get her/him out of there.

Florence shooting suspect was dedicated stay-at-home dad, says family friend

This article says none of the children were foster kids so the allegation did not come from a current foster child.

From the article: Rumors have been circulating that some of the children were fostered. A spokesperson for the S.C. Department of Social Services, which licenses foster parents, said “at the time of the incident, none of the children in the Hopkins home were in foster care.

Asked whether the Hopkins had ever fostered children in their home, Social Services spokesperson Pam Bryant said, “As you are aware, the identity and status of licensed foster parents is confidential.”

The article includes a viewpoint from someone who knew the family fairly well, although, she had not spent time with them recently.

All of their 9 children were adopted but they also took in foster children. So I'm not quite clear on whose kids were in the house when the shooting occured. And that article quoted above----they were really scraping the bottom of the barrel to get that info. That woman wasn't a family friend, she was an employee who by her own admission, hadn't seen the kids in several years. Since 1 son is already in prison on theft and forgery charges, a second has been arrested on child rape charges, I think it's safe to say that this former employee's idea of being a "dedicated stay-at-home dad" may be far different than that of "good father".

129 guns found in home of suspect accused of shooting 7 South Carolina officers

Lott said it took 13 days to process what he's described as a "massive" crime scene, which Lott estimated was six blocks long and 100 yards wide. Officers also had to search every inch of the Hopkins' home, which is about 6,500 square feet.

Lott said when they searched the home, they found two military-style assault rifles and a handgun which they believed were used in the shooting. But when officers keep looking, they found 126 additional guns inside the residence.

The sheriff said Frederick Hopkins knew the officers were coming, and was waiting for them.

"Just going inside the house was chilling," Lott said. "Seeing how it was all set up. The officers had no chance whatsoever."
