Wow! I just listened to a very interesting and uplifting interview on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, with Dr. Vincent T. DeVita, who made great strides in treating cancer as the director of the National Cancer Institute and then at the Yale Cancer Institute. He was largely responsible for the treatments we currently use, and has recently written a book, "The Death of Cancer." http://www.npr.org/programs/fresh-air/

He diagnosed his own son with aplastic anemia, and stayed by his side after it was decided that due to his lack of an immune system, he would had to live in a completely sterile environment. His son lived that way for eight years until his death. Sadly, Dr. DeVita says there are protocols available now that could have been very beneficial to his son. The movie "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble" was based on his son's life.

Dr. DeVita himself is also a prostate cancer survivor. In the interview he stated that his case was so severe that many top prostate cancer specialists wouldn't agree to perform surgery on him.

I wish I had the kind of recall that I could quote from the interview -- the role he played in successfully treating cancer is fascinating and remarkable -- but since there are no transcripts, you'll have to listen for yourself. I also loved his optimism about cancer. One snippet I do remember was towards the end where he said (something like) "If you have cancer and go to a doctor and they tell you there's nothing they can do, go to another doctor. Almost every cancer, at almost any stage, in almost every person, is treatable."

The one study you asked if I could help decipher was a study done on one patient in Germany that had undergone a prostatectomy and was taking only the chemo agent as a form of treatment. Interesting study, but unfortunately N/A here.

I really hope this drug can get to working fast, hot flashes and all! I am hoping it will help him feel better overall and the bone pain will diminish some. One of the things to be mindful of Niner is that your DH's bones are fragile and even a minor trip or fall can result in a broken bone.

I know you both have been dealing with testing and hospitalization over the last 4 months, but someone was obviously figuring this out and did the right tests, got you all to the right Doctor etc. Patients with a complicated medical history and a lot going on sometimes take more time to get through to the nitty gritty because there is so much to rule out. I am so relieved that you saw whoever you saw that had a clue on what to look for at this stage and kept digging until they had a diagnosis. It is so easy to go off on different tangents only to realize that what you thought might be the issue was not the issue at all.

Sometimes all it takes is a good doctor to refer you to a specialist when their work up is showing nothing glaringly wrong. The specialist then becomes like a dog with a bone and leaves no stone unturned, trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. In medicine, we call this zebras because it is neither black or white, it is both. (Mixed metaphors I know).

It sounds as though you have had the right doctors working on behalf of your DH's care and I hope they continue to include you in every discussion and every step of his treatment. We are here for you and as you proceed on this journey, just know we are here for you. If you care to share here or privately, I am anxious to know what the MRI shows. They need to get you in sooner than later so they can have a complete picture. Tell them your WS SB friends want stat results.

He did fall the other night... caught his foot on a chair leg and went backwards, falling on his hip and back and making a rather very BIG hole in the wall!!! Yikes!! He said he was just sore in those places that he hit...

The MRI should be anytime this week! And yes - we found a doctor who didn't give up on the Huz! I'm so glad he got referred to this one! And yes, I've been in every doctor session he's been in, and I'm on his list of people of "who will know all his medical information". I will definitely let you (all) know what the MRI shows. Hoping it hasn't spread anywhere else... we shall see! And of course, I know you are all here for me - and that's helps quite a LOT!! I can't say enough Thank yous to you all! I think that is why my spirit is up (high) - going with good feelings about all this mess!

I know they were trying to be creative and that they admit to taking creative license, but I found it offensive that they portrayed Jodi as a sweet, insecure young woman who just wanted to please, and Travis as an emotional bully. I watched this interview with the main actors and the director, and they seemed quite proud that advance audiences felt sympathy for Jodi... WTH?

Well, we knew it was just a matter of time.

I just back from the er with my nephew. He had a small heart attack this afternoon when I was with him. His mama had just went to sit with Lily for a bit, so I'm glad she wasn't there at the time. This is her baby boy that went thru two tears in his aorta, one above and one below his heart that they repaired in an eight hour surgery, and he was doing good, then had a stroke the next day and had part of his skull removed so his brain could swell, and spent four months in the hospital in 2013. They put his skull back on eight months later, and he's been fine, until today. I'm glad my great nephew had dropped by for a few minutes and I had him re check his blood pressure because I was getting a different reading and within five minutes we had the paramedics, and they told me to take off before them to head to the hospital and was about halfway there when my sister called and told me to come back to my house and she'd get me so we wouldn't be alone walking out to the cars in the parking garages and valet parking stops at seven. It's the county hospital (you don't have a choice) and it's pretty rough down there, and today they had a female inmate walk out of the hospital and took off. When my sister and I were changing the car from valet to the er parking lot ( I do need to ***** about it. There are not that many places for a brand new just opened county hospital with the amount of people coming through there.) there were inmates in orange jumpsuits sitting outside smoking, and talking on cellphones and no police, no bailiff. No one person. Are we now letting them free do this? Anyway, just touching base, I don't think I'll sleep for a while, but , he's doing OK and stable, so we came home. Also one nurse said the new Parkland had some hiccups, and they had to keep people down in the for a day or two. I'd hate that, much better be in a room with a bigger bed, and someone can sleep in there with him too. Also how in the world can you charge ten dollars for parking at a county hospital full of poor people?


So, tomorrow, well it's really today, I'll find you a song Niner, send Zuri jingles. See if we hear from our wild child on the loose.

Bear Lake Monster

A Utah Ghost Story

If you travel to Bear Lake in Utah on a quiet day, you just might catch a glimpse of the Bear Lake Monster. The monster looks like a huge brown snake and is nearly 90 feet long. It has ears that stick out from the side of its skinny head and a mouth big enough to eat a man. According to some, it has small legs and it kind of scurries when it ventures out on land. But in the water - watch out! It can swim faster than a horse can gallop - makes a mile a minute on a good day. Sometimes the monster likes to sneak up on unwary swimmers and blow water at them. The ones it doesn't carry off to eat, that is.

A feller I heard about spotted the monster early one evening as he was walking along the lake. He tried to shoot it with his rifle. The man was a crack shot, but not one of his bullets touched that monster. It scared the heck out of him and he high tailed it home faster than you can say Jack Robinson. Left his rifle behind him and claimed the monster ate it.

Sometimes, when the monster has been quiet for a while, people start saying it is gone for good. Some folks even dredge up that old tale that says how Pecos Bill heard about the Bear Lake monster and bet some cowpokes that he could wrestle that monster until it said uncle. According to them folks, the fight lasted for days and created a hurricane around Bear Lake. Finally, Bill flung that there monster over his shoulder and it flew so far it went plumb around the world and landed in Loch Ness, where it lives to this day.

Course, we know better than that. The Bear Lake Monster is just hibernating-like. Keep your eyes open at dusk and maybe you'll see it come out to feed. Just be careful swimming in the lake, or you might be its next meal!



Black Dog of Hanging Hills
Connecticut Ghost Story

He smiled as he sipped at his coffee. It had been an excellent hike. He was glad his friend had recommended coming to the Hanging Hills in Connecticut; not the first place that had come to his mind when considering a vacation. But it was beautiful here. When his friend arrived tomorrow they would tackle some of the more challenging terrain.

“Did you have a nice hike?” asked the innkeeper as she refilled his cup.

“Yes indeed. I had some unexpected company,” he said with a smile.

“Really? I thought you were the only one crazy enough to go hiking in the rain,” she teased.

“It was a little black dog,” he said. “Cute fellow. Followed me all the way up the mountain and down again.”

He looked up from his coffee to see the innkeeper’s face had gone pale.

“A black dog?” she asked. “That’s not good.”

Why not?”

“We have a saying around here,” she replied. “’And if a man shall meet the Black Dog once, it shall be for joy; and if twice, it shall be for sorrow; and the third time, he shall die.’” He laughed. “That’s just superstition.”

“That’s what Mr. Pynchon said. He saw the black dog twice. The second time he saw the dog, the friend he was climbing with fell to his death. And later, Mr. Pynchon decided to climb the same mountain, and he died too. Everyone here believes he saw the dog just before he fell.”

“Nonsense. It was just a cute stray,” he said uneasily. She shrugged and took the coffee pot over to her other customers.

His friend arrived the next morning and they both laughed about the story of the black dog. They set out on their climb. About halfway up the mountain, he looked up and saw the black dog.

“There’s the dog,” he called to his friend.

And then his foot slipped and he plunged down the side of the hill, desperately grabbing at saplings and rocks, trying to halt his descent. It seemed to take forever for him to stop sliding. There was a stabbing pain in his leg. When he looked at it, his head swimming, it was bent at an odd angle. They had to send in a mountain rescue team to get him down. At the hospital, they told him his leg was broken in two places and he was very lucky it wasn’t worse.

“You know, that was a very strange fall,” said his friend uneasily. “You don’t really think it had anything to do with that black dog?”

He looked down at the cast that extended all the way up to his hip.

“I don’t know. But I don’t really want to find out. Next time, let’s go to Colorado.”

His friend agreed.

A couple of weeks ago my son and I saw the car with the Google camera in our area taking new pics of our road. I was happy to see it as I had spruced-up the front of my house this Spring (but my son did not remove the garbage pail from the road, so that will probably be in the pic :sheesh: ).

The news follows a report on Ars Technica by Peter Bright that Microsoft changed the ‘Optional’ upgrade status of Windows 10 without any warning. The subtle change simply ticked the box beside the upgrade by default in Windows Update on Windows 7 and Windows 8. This meant an upgrade to Windows 10 would be automatically performed the next time the user installed any Important updates..."
