Three suspects held on $1M bond in death of Claiborne Co. man

"Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested three suspects and confirmed foul play is suspected in the death of a Claiborne County man.

In a media briefing Tuesday, March 2, officials say all three suspects are facing a $1 million dollar bond in the death of Aaron Massengill.

A preliminary hearing for the suspects on March 16, revealed Massengill was shot inside a home before he died.

No information has been released on a motive into the death of Massengill. The arraignment for all three suspects is scheduled for May 3, 2021."

"CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. — One of the three suspects charged with killing a Claiborne County man will spend 50 years in prison.

District Attorney Jared Effler confirmed to 10News that Courtney Gilpin pleaded guilty in Claiborne County Criminal Court on Aug. 5 for her role in the murder of Aaron Massengill.

Effler said Gilpin received the sentence for the plea agreement the same day after the victim's family was consulted.

The two other suspects, Patrick Smith and Jimmy Riffe, will be in court at a later date, according to the district attorney.

The three were arrested and charged after Massengill's body was discovered in 2021 along Ferguson Ridge Road."

"A man who is among the trio accused in the murder of a Claiborne County man last year has agreed to a plea deal.

28-year-old Patrick Smith was charged with second-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with the death of Aaron Massengill. According to DA Jared Effler, Smith entered a guilty plea for second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison.

In August, another one of the trio, Courtney Gilpin, agreed to a plea on felony murder and robbery charges. She was sentenced to 50 years.

The third suspect, Jimmy Lee Riffe, is facing charges including first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery. Riffe is expected in court on November 7."

"A man was sentenced to 45 years in prison after he pleaded guilty in court Monday to murdering Aaron Massengill, District Attorney General Jared Effler said.

Patrick Smith was one of three people arrested in April 2021 after investigators found Massengill's body along Ferguson Ridge Road in Tazewell in Feb. 2021. Smith pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in court Monday.

One of the other two suspects, Courtney Gilpin, pleaded guilty in Claiborne County Criminal Court on Aug. 5, 2022, for her role in the murder. She received a 50-year prison sentence.

The third suspect, Jimmy Riffe, is set to go to trial on June 27, according to Effler."

CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. — The third suspect in a 2021 murder pleaded guilty on Friday to participating in the murder and disappearance of Aaron Jeremiah Massengill.

Jimmt Lee Riffe, 36, appeared in court before Judge Zachary Walden on Friday and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. He was one of three people arrested in April 2021 after investigators found Massengill's body along Ferguson Ridge Road in Tazewell in Feb. 2021.

District Attorney General Jared Effler said Massengill's family was in agreement with the decision.
