Mark Bridger, 46, appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates and will appear at Caernarfon Crown Court on Wednesday.
Mr Bridger confirmed his name and address and cried as he confirmed he understood the charges against him.

Wearing black trousers and a blue jumper Mark Bridger, 46, stood in the dock of Aberystwyth Magistrates' Court as the charges were put to him.

As well as abducting and murdering April, Bridger is charged with the unlawful disposal and concealment of her body with intent to pervert the course of justice.

Minutes earlier about 100 people lined the streets, shouting abuse and heckling as Bridger's security van swept into a secure court car park.

Officers searching for missing schoolgirl April Jones are for the first time starting to prepare for the fact that they might never find her.

Five-year-old April disappeared from the Mid Wales town of Machynlleth last Monday, October 1, sparking a massive search and rescue operation involving police, coastguards, mountain rescue and river search teams of professionals and expert volunteers.

But after a week of exhaustive searches, the police superintendent in charge of the case has admitted that his officers might have to face up to the prospect of their efforts being in vain and never finding April.

Superintendent Ian John, who has headed the investigation from the outset, said today: “We have to prepare for the time when we accept that we might never find April.

Tributes to Machynlleth minister killed in crash
Rev Morris Jones Morris, 87, who lived on the same estate as missing April Jones in Machynlleth, was killed in a smash on the junction between the A470 and the A494, near Dolgellau on Sunday.

He had been a Presbyterian minister for three decades and was returning home from preaching in Rhyl.

His son Rev Meirion Morris said: “My father was a cultured man who preached until the very end. He had 30 grandchildren who were always delighted to be in his company.

Mark Bridger, 46, is the uncle of the little girl’s two half sisters.
Detectives looking at the complex relationships of Mr Bridger’s past, discovered that he had fathered two children with a woman called Elaine Griffiths. Mr Bridger and Elaine had Connor and Sophie in the 1990s.
Around the same time, Elaine’s sister Karen had two daughters - Hazel and Abby - with April’s father Paul Jones. He subsequently married April’s mother, Coral.
The connection means that Mr Bridger’s children are cousins to April’s half sisters.

The Sunday World can reveal that the 46 year-old, who was charged with the five-year-old's murder, was an experienced potholer. The massive search for missing Welsh girl April Jones could well continue into Christmas and beyond, British police have said today.
Major search efforts to locate the body of the five-year-old schoolgirl are nowhere near being scaled back.
As the painstaking search for April entered its third week, police vowed the hunt would go on for months to come.
Superintendent Ian John said he could not rule out the ongoing search for April would extend into 2013.
"We said goodbye to 150 officers this morning and they've been replaced by another 150 specialists," he said, speaking from Machynlleth.
"Numbers may fluctuate a bit on a daily basis.
"But whilst we still have viable lines of inquiry, we will continue to search.

The search for missing April Jones could continue until Christmas and beyond, police have said.
Major search efforts to find the five-year-old schoolgirl are ongoing, and Dyfed Powys Police say the hunt may not end for months.
"We said goodbye to 150 officers this morning and they've been replaced by another 150 specialists," Superintendent Ian John said, speaking from April's home town of Machynlleth.
"Numbers may fluctuate a bit on a daily basis, but whilst we still have viable lines of inquiry, we will continue to search.

Police thank Helensburgh man for kind donations
Generous Helensburgh people donated almost £700 worth of food for those involved in the search for missing toddler April Jones.
And kind dad Barry Hamilton travelled almost 350 miles to Wales to hand over the parcels of groceries last Tuesday morning.
The Garelochhead man turned up in the five-year-old girl’s home town of Machynlleth, exactly a week after she went missing, to help keep the searchers fed and watered.

In an effort to highlight the diappearance of April Jones three weeks ago, the town clock in the five-year-old's home town of Machynlleth was lit up in pink at 7pm on Monday - the time she went missing.
Pink was chosen as it was the youngster's favourite colour. Facebook support groups are also urging villagers to wear pink ribbons and April's parents have even had them tattooed on their bodies as life-long reminders.

April Jones police probe attempted abduction of schoolboy, 9, by man in a white van yesterday
Detectives investigating the abduction and alleged murder of April Jones are probing claims a van driver tried to snatch a schoolboy 75 miles from where the five-year-old was taken.
The boy, nine, escaped after he was grabbed by the white van driver just before 9am as he walked to school, in the village of Llandybie in West Wales, yesterday.
The child freed himself and ran home to his family unharmed. The case is not linked to April's disappearance three weeks ago.

Private prayers have been held in Machynlleth in mid Wales to mark four weeks since the disappearance of schoolgirl April Jones.
The five-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer was abducted on October 1. Police are continuing to look for her, with 150 experts taking part in the hunt.
So far more than 40,000 man-hours have been spent in trying to find April.
More than 300 areas have been searched, including mountains, caves, derelict mines and lakes around the town.

Missing 5-year-old's parents thank public one month on
The parents of missing five-year-old April Jones thanked the police and public for their support Thursday, a month after she disappeared from the market town of Machynlleth in mid-Wales.
Coral and Paul Jones said they were "overwhelmed by the massive amount of resources being used... looking for our beautiful daughter".
April, a cerebral palsy sufferer, was last seen getting into a vehicle on October 1. She had been riding her bike close to the family's home.
Local man Mark Bridger, 46 has been charged with her abduction and murder but she has not been found.
"It is four weeks since April was taken from us, as a family we are obviously devastated and our lives have been torn apart," her parents said in a statement Thursday.
"Since 1 we have received messages, flowers and cards from across not only the UK but the world and we have taken comfort knowing that people are thinking of April and us.

APRIL’S Fund has now reached a whopping £32,000 with more to come thanks to a fisherman who has named a successful fly he has designed after April Jones, a young Aberystwyth musician who has penned a song in her memory and a couple of local men who are going on a sponsored drive to Land’s End.
Melvyn Arnold, of Tregarth, can’t stop catching salmon with the fly he is calling April’s Little Shrimp, now that he has put some pink in it.

This week marked a month since little April, who has cerebral palsy, was abducted from near her home on the Bryn Y Gog estate in Machynlleth after being allowed to play out following a glowing report at parents’ evening from teachers at Ysgol Gynradd Machynlleth.

Facebook user avoids jail over April Jones comments
A sales adviser who made a series of depraved sexual comments about five-year-old April Jones on Facebook has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Magistrates in Worcester chose not to jail Sam Busby despite being told that another Facebook user was sentenced to three months in prison for an "almost identical" offence last month.
Busby, 18, was arrested after posting offensive remarks on the site on the day a man was charged with April's murder, five days after her disappearance in Machynlleth, mid-Wales.
