Mackenzie Lueck disappearance: Police spotted digging holes at Utah home after neighbors report recent fire, ‘strong stench’
Police combing a Salt Lake City home for clues on the whereabouts of missing University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck were spotted digging holes into its backyard early this morning following claims from neighbors that its owner recently was burning something that let off a “strong stench.”

[...]

In the overnight hours, investigators were seen carrying shovels into the property’s backyard.

Aerial footage captured hours later by a helicopter belonging to news station KSL then showed police inspecting numerous, freshly-dug holes.

Brown paper bags -- presumably police evidence -- were spotted lined up in front of the home’s doorway, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. A car also reportedly was towed away by investigators.

“We just want to make sure…[we] get all the information that we can before we share just speculation,” Salt Lake Assistant Police Chief Tim Doubt told reporters late last night.

Neighbors who spoke to the newspaper say they recently saw the homeowner burning something in his backyard and smoke from the fire was traveling into their windows.

[...]

“It definitely assaulted your nose,” Joseph Peterson, who lives one block west of the home, told the Salt Lake Tribune, describing how he got home one night from work only to smell a “strong stench” in the air.

[...]

It’s not clear if the unknown individual that Lueck is said to have met at the park is the owner of the home or the renter.

An Airbnb listing of the property advertised "beautiful and affordable basement rooms in the heart of [Salt Lake City] with shared common area" for $27 and $30 a night.

[...]

But neighbors are worried about the search, and fear something "really bad" has happened at the property.

“The K-9’s [were] here. They’ve been in the backyard. They’ve been looking in the car," CP told Fox News. "I told my husband ‘this is bigger than just a dope deal, or something – something really bad has happened over there.'”

Police have ‘person of interest’ in MacKenzie Lueck case; ask for help locating mattress, box spring
[...]

Chief Mike Brown said the owner of that residence is considered a person of interest in the case. No arrests have been made at this time.

He also said they are trying to locate a mattress and box spring that were given away at a residence at 547 North 1000 West in the Fair Park area of Salt Lake City.

Brown said they want the person who took those items to contact their department.

Other evidence taken from the home is being “processed and analyzed and this will take some time,” Brown said.

The search for Lueck remains an open investigation.

[...]

Utah police say they have spoken with a person of interest in the disappearance of a college student missing for 10 days and are trying to find a mattress that had been at the man’s home.

Salt Lake City police chief Mike Brown released a photo of the mattress on Thursday and asked for whoever might have taken it to call police.

The homeowner is not in custody and his name was not made public.

The announcement came after police searched the man’s home for about 19 hours and were seeing going inside it with shovels and police dogs.

Police say homeowner is person of interest in missing Utah student case
3a2e535949

The owner of an Airbnb searched extensively by Salt Lake police is now considered a "person of interest" in the disappearance of missing University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck, Chief Mike Brown announced Thursday.

But as of midmorning Thursday, no arrests had been made and the man, 31, was released from police custody after being questioned by detectives.

Also Thursday, Brown announced that police were looking for a box springs and mattress that the homeowner listed for "free" on the website "LetGo" five days ago. The chief wants whoever claimed that mattress to contact his detectives.

Police were even seen digging holes in the backyard of the house in the Fairpark neighborhood at 547 N. 1000 West. A car was also towed away from the scene by police.

[...]

The house being searched is listed as an Airbnb. Police have not said what led them to that house. The man also used to live in North Salt Lake near Hatch Park, according to court records.

Neighbors said the man who owns the house is quiet and mostly keeps to himself.

Salt Lake City Police: Person of interest identified in case of missing Mackenzie Lueck
[...]

The owner of the home had spoken with detectives, Brown said.

[...]

Brown also confirmed that medical examiner's office personnel were present during the service of the search warrant but declined to state in what capacity.

"They were there with us last night, but as far as the extent of their activity, that's still part of the investigation and we're not releasing that right now," Brown said.

[...]

According to Brown, several items of evidence were located during the service of the search warrant.

Brown said investigators were made aware on Wednesday night of a mattress and box spring that had been given away from the residence last week.

Brown said investigators were hoping to retrieve the items as part of the investigation.

'Person of interest' emerges in case of missing Utah woman
[...]

Online court and property records identify the man as being 31, divorced this year and with no criminal record in Utah. The Associated Press is not naming him because authorities have not done so.

[...]

Brown declined comment when asked if the homeowner met Lueck at the park, or if police have identified the person she met there.

[...]

The homeowner has lived there about two years and has rented out part of it on Airbnb, said next-door neighbor TC.

TC said the man was friendly and that the two discussed landscaping improvements he made shortly after he moved in, but became withdrawn over the last several months. He said the man in recent months stopped keeping up his yard as well as he had before.

Camomile said he never saw anyone matching Lueck's description at the house and last saw the homeowner last Saturday, when he brought in his trash cans.

https://ksltv.com/416854/what-do-we-know-about-the-homeowner-in-the-mackenzie-lueck-case/
KSL TV has learned more about the owner of the home at 550 North and 1000 West in the Fairpark area, which Salt Lake City Police searched in connection to missing 23-year-old Mackenzie Lueck.

[...]

In 2016, the homeowner was evicted from the Ridgeview Apartments in North Salt Lake. The apartments are just south of Hatch Park, where Lueck was last seen. A Lyft driver witnessed her willingly enter into another person’s car at approximately 3 a.m. on June 17.

Ridgeview Apartments management said they are unable to access records beyond three years on tenants and couldn’t provide any additional information on the man or why he was evicted.

It does not appear the man has any criminal history in Utah.

His Fairpark property was listed on Airbnb, and it had several reviews from people who stayed in the home. Neighbors said he lived in the upper level of the house and rented out the basement. However, the listing has since been removed from the vacation rental site.
