Did she decide to go to the mall on the way to the airport??

So her stepdad is the one that is supposed to drive her to the airport but before going she decides to go to the mall, or is the shuttle to the airport AT the mall and she decided to shop at the mall - dragging along her luggage???? Makes me think why the stepdad didn't drop her off and let her run in and shop (and get what she wanted), wait for her and the luggage, then drive her to the airport. I just don't get her deciding to go to the mall hours before a flight at a rather large metro airport, where delays in TSA screening and other things could delay you even further.

Echoing my thoughts exactly!

Missing from the luggage was some clothes, some cash and her cell phone, which hasn't been turned on since she went missing.

Her mom says she drove Katelin from her house in Caroline County to her stepdad's in Spotsylvania. Saturday, he took her to the Franconia Springfield Metro station to catch a train to Reagan International so she could fly back to Arizona, where she's living, and start cosmetology school Monday. The mother says she got a text message on Saturday saying Katelin had boarded the plane, however, it turns out she never boarded the plane.

The family is putting a search group for Katelin on Saturday.

I looked at the Metro website (the Metro is the subway/railway system that goes into Washington D.C.) and it appears the Franconia-Springfield Metro station is located fairly close to a shopping center called "Springfield Commons" but I can't tell if it's actually within walking distance: http://www.wmata.com/rail/evacuation/86.095.pdf

what a strange case.....

I believe it is ,I am trying to remember exactly but it has been a few years and last I heard Springfield mall was almost completely shut down. Now it is called the town center but I havent heard if the businesses returned.

I believe it is right around the corner from the metro not more then a half mile for sure.

This is strange.... So the mother and step father live in different homes? divorced I guess? I wonder who was the last person to actually speak to her on the phone not a text message? I don't think this one will turn out well. I hope I'm wrong

My heart is crying for this young woman, my girls are around her and her fiancé 's ages and I just can't imagine what the families are going through. I really hope this doesn't turn out the way I think it's going to 😢

Conflicting reports between mom and police:

It’s uncertain why her mother told the TV station she was dropped off at the mall but police say she was dropped off at the metro. The metro station is not located at the shopping center and is about a mile away.

Yeah ,I dunno but LE has at a mile driving but really...

0.2 miles walking and it takes 5 minutes. Not that I believe she was dropped there, but it isn't unreasonable if her luggage was light and mobile enough.

Really don't think this will have a happy ending but I hope im wrong! If the allegations about the step father are true, I wonder why she accepted the lift off him?

If you scroll down at this link, it shows that the mall and metro station is 1 mile by car:

It appears the Franconia-Springfield station is on the other side of 289, not the destination you linked above in Google. The blue M is the Metro.

It's an hour's drive from Spotsylvania (where the stepdad lives) to the Franconia-Springfield station.

Would there be a closer Metro?? Seems quite a distance, then he expected her to grab a train to Regan, and she says drop me off at the mall instead??? Why not just drive her a few more miles to the airport, know that she made it safe, etc.?

Still so many conflicting stories about what happened that day. This says that her mom, LS, drove her to the step father's, but it does not say if that was on Saturday or maybe the day before? Then on Saturday, he was supposed to drive her to the Metro station. From there she was supposed to get herself to the airport and fly home to her girlfriend.

First off, I'm going to say it...Why in the hello didn't the "mother" drive her daughter to the airport? My daughter is 28 years old and I still drive her to and pick her up from the airport when she flies in to visit. My time with my daughter is precious and I want to spend every minute I can with her.

Now with that off my chest, here is a quick map showing a possible route from the "mother's" house which is in Ruther Glen, to the ex step-person in Spotsylvania, to River Road, where the luggage was found and then the metro station. I don't think she ever made it as far as the train station. https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Rut...6f848cd39bb!2m2!1d-77.1682579!2d38.766411!3e0

I hope LE step it up and start a full blown criminal investigation.

Right now my thoughts and prayers are with Katelin, her girlfriend, sister, cousins, aunts, and her girlfriend's mother who are so very worried about her. I do not like the sounds of this at all.

It could be that maybe she had to work and couldn't take Katelin to the airport? I wouldn't interpret it as necessarily meaning she didn't *want* to spend as much time as possible with her daughter, but simply couldn't.

Sometimes time tables just don't work if there are work shifts or other responsibilities or perhaps Katelyn wanted to meet stepdad or perhaps stepdad's house is conveniently near some other people she wanted to meet? JMO the alleged past abuse is of course a huge concern but there are any number of legitimate reasons why a loving and concerned parent would let some other relative drive their daughter to the airport.
