Sheriff: Foul play not suspected in human remains discovery

RURAL RETREAT, Va. — A sheriff says foul play is not suspected in the death of a person whose remains have been found.
Smyth County Sheriff Chip Shuler tells the Bristol Herald Courier his office learned of the remains Wednesday after a partially decomposed body had been found in an abandoned cabin.

The body has not yet been identified, and Shuler says identification make take weeks. The body was sent to the Roanoke Office of Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy on Thursday.

Shuler says the sheriff’s office does have a missing person report from October 2015 that was filed in the area, but emphasized no identification can be made yet.

I'm not seeing any listed missing from Oct 2015 in Smyth County, VA in NaMus, but I found a search and rescue page that has an entry where they called off the search for a missing hiker (50 year old white male) in Oct 2015: https://www.bdsarco.org/?paged=2

Could be Jeffrey Meadows:
Mr. Meadows was dropped off by family to go camping for a few days near the Virginia Highlands Horse trail off of Hale's Lake Road in the Camp area of Sugar Grove. When family returned to pick him up he was not there and hasn't been heard from since.

His official missing date is Sept 30, 2015 but they would have searched for him in October.

The remains of an individual were found yesterday at an abandoned cabin in the camp area of Smyth County. An investigation is under way to determine the person’s identity.

According to Smyth County Sheriff Chip Shuler, news came into the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office about 10 a.m. Wednesday that a partially decomposed body had been found in the cabin off Hale Lake Road in Rural Retreat. Deputies and investigators responded, but the body couldn’t be positively identified and it was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

Wait, if it was the missing man from 2015, then why was the body partially decomposed? Unless the missing person had been living off the land for a few years. Don't know.
Prayers for the family of whoever is deceased.

One person's partially decomposed is another's skeletal remains...there doesn't seem to be any consistency in how terms are used.
