GUILTY GA - Draiden Nichols, 11 months, died, Mom fell asleep in bathtub; Coweta; 9 Jun 2021 *arrest*

Anslie Brantley was arrested Friday and charged with second degree murder and second degree cruelty to children.

The Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened on June 9 at a home on Lassiter Road.

The baby boy was found unresponsive and later died at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. According to an obituary placed by the family, Draiden Shane Nichols was 11 months old.

Family members gave Channel 2 Action News permission to share photos of Draiden.

Investigators found that Brantley had taken drugs and fallen asleep in the bathtub with her son. Draiden was unresponsive when she woke up.

Brantley was arrested in Alamo, Georgia and taken to the Coweta County Jail.

Brantley and the youngster were bathing in the upstairs bathroom when the event occurred, according to Brantley’s mother, Kelli Gordon. Gordon claimed she checked on the couple multiple times because they had been in the restroom for quite some time. According to Law & Crime, she returned to watching TV after receiving only muttered responses that she couldn’t comprehend.

“After about 10 or 20 minutes, Ansley [sic]began screaming. According to the outlet, “[Redacted] got up and went to Ansley [sic]as she was holding [the infant]and said he can’t breathe, what do I do?” Gordon told the cops.

Gordon pulled the baby from her arms and started resuscitating it right away, but the kid was already blue and cold. Brantley was “not in a state where she was willing to speak,” according to the cops who attempted to speak with her.

Brantley had taken narcotics before entering in the tub with her kid, according to further inquiry. She then passed out, drowning him.

Methamphetamine was also discovered in the home by deputies.

Gordon was also arrested and charged with narcotics possession, according to the report. Her other five children are reportedly in the Georgia Department of Family and Children’s Services’ custody.

One firefighter told deputies “they suctioned a lot of water from the child” as he was being transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to Law & Crime.

Brantley’s mother and owner of the home, 36-year-old Kelli Gordon, told investigators on the scene she had gone shopping and returned to find her daughter and grandson were in the upstairs bathroom, taking a bath.

She said she tried to check on them through the door several times “since she had been in the bathroom for some time,” but only got mumbled responses that she couldn’t understand, so she “went back to watching TV.”

Gordon said she took her grandson and “began resuscitating him”, telling investigators she “saw how blue he was, and he was cold, real cold.”

According to the police report, the deputy then went to speak with Brantley, who was “sitting in a chair with only a towel wrapped around her crying” and “not in a state where she was willing to speak.”

After executing a search warrant, police said they found methamphetamine at the home. They believe Brantley took some before getting into the bath with her son.

*How could she be a teen with six children?
*If she took meth, she wouldn’t easily fall asleep. My guess is she took some sort of opioid or heroin and took the meth to counteract getting too low and she needed to come back up to balance out and take care of six? kids. Or…she could have been on a three dayer (either+ it -) on the meth;she was burnt out and falling asleep and took more meth to get back up. Addicts never quit chasing the high! Even those in recovery. The urge is always there; the difference is the urge is not acted upon.

Grandmother (Gordon) is 36 and her five children were removed from the home. 36 year old grandmother…most of the parents in our playgroups had their first kid around 35 or later. I literally cannot imagine being responsible for another life at the age of 17…let alone 6 by age 30 or so.

Mother (Brantley) is 19. Meth wouldn’t put her to sleep IMO. Isn’t that the hallmark of meth use? Going crazy from lack of sleep and nutrition? Maybe she took a “downer” to sleep off a meth binge? I don’t know.

I hope the 5 kids (grandmother’s kids, mom’s siblings) are safe.

ive noticed thats common w ppl who use burner phones, lose them or they get shut off, they dont remember their password so they get a new one. aka usually unstable life style.

heroin puts you to sleep and is a narcotic. maybe they switched whose drugs were whose.
