No-one here expected Hamas could kill so many like this

Jeremy Bowen
International editor, reporting from Kfar Aza kibbutz

The residents of the Israeli border communities expected periodic rocket attacks after Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007.

They accepted the danger as the price of country life in a tight-knit community which still had traces of the pioneer spirit of early Zionist settlements.

Residents of Kfar Aza, and the other Israeli communities near Gaza, enjoyed good quality of life - despite the threat from Hamas rockets.

In the houses, lawns and open areas of the kibbutz, a concrete shelter was never more than a dash away.

All the houses also had reinforced safe rooms. They also had outside terraces, barbeques, swings for the children, and fresh air.

But no one - here in Kfar Aza or elsewhere in Israel - imagined Hamas would be able to breach Israel's defences and kill so many people.

The horror and rage of Israelis has been mixed with incredulity that the state and the military failed in its fundamental duty to protect its citizens.

That's what happens when foreign "humanitarian aid" ends up in the wrong hands...

Palestinian president 'rejects' civilian killings, hostage taking, on both sides

The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has spoken to the King of Jordan, King Abdullah II.

Palestine’s main news network, Wafa, cited Abbas as stressing, “the need to move to political action to end the occupation and achieve peace, stressing the rejection of practices related to killing civilians or abusing them on both sides, calling for the release of civilians, prisoners and detainees, and stressing the need to stop settler terrorism against our people in Palestinian cities, villages and camps in the West Bank.”

I don’t understand this if someone can please explain nicely.

Can Palestinians actually really protect themselves? There is nowhere for them to go? They can’t leave the region unless Egypt lets them and there is no other way out.

If these shelters were safe, wouldn’t all the children and vulnerable go there? Are these shelters really safe? Are they enough of them?

I don’t understand how Palestinians in Gaza can get out of the crossfire like it’s an option for them. Safety is not an option for them, is it?
A step toward safety would be Hamas giving up the hostages. imo

I see it as them trying to prevent the loss of life the only way they really can at this point. Hamas it telling people to stay home. If Israel is planning to bomb specific locations, then the warning seems like a way to avoid any confusion on their part that they are going to bomb and if anyone in that area can get to a safer place they should do it. Even if it saves a few that would otherwise have stayed in their house it's worth it.

I think it also sends a VERY clear message to the Palestinian people that Israel does not intend to harm innocent civilians. I think they have been brainwashed for a long time and if they have any thoughts that Hamas is acting in their best interests, then this should put some doubt in their minds that Israel isn't out to wipe them off the map.. they are there to rid Gaza of Hamas.. not Palestinians. Who knows what Hamas has been feeding them this entire time. They could have been told Israel is attacking without provocation. Does the average citizen in Gaza know that Hamas began this on Saturday morning or do they think Israel just up and decided to come after them?

Blinken to travel to Qatar tomorrow

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is travelling to Qatar tomorrow to meet with senior officials.

Earlier this week Qatari mediators tried to negotiate for the release of women and children held hostage in Gaza in exchange for 36 women in Israeli prisons.

Qatar had confirmed it was involved in mediation talks, but Israel denied any negotiations were happening when asked by the Reuters news agency.

" 'We're just waiting for death.'

The inhabitants of the Gaza Strip have nowhere to escape.

A ground operation will certainly be devastating for the civilian population in the region.
Because we should remember that we are dealing with an extremely poor and densely populated area that does not have mandatory shelters.

The border crossing in Rafah is currently the only possible way to leave the region, because the border crossing in Erez has been closed by Israel.

Although talks are underway to open it to enable the evacuation of civilians and foreign citizens, they have not yet brought any results.

It should also not be forgotten that Israeli forces and attacks are not the only threat to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip, because Israel has also cut off the supply of food, water, fuel and electricity to Gaza, which according to some human rights defenders constitutes a violation of international law.

Israeli officials, however, argue that they are 'fighting against human animals' so their response is 'adequate'.

All this makes attempts to rescue the hostages held by Hamas
extremely difficult
.

The general chaos, the huge number of people in a small area and the network of underground tunnels make locating over 150 people known to have been taken prisoner seem almost a miracle.

As a result, experts say Israel is facing the most complex hostage crisis it has ever faced."

Color me confused.
Yesterday, I watched a reporter choking back tears while describing the atrocities of infants who were beheaded. She was reporting live, on scene at the deadly attack on a small 'farming' community in Israel.

The report took off, like wild fire. Hideous and barbaric. News media, and social media both.

Suddenly, it was called back and questioned. ( By Hamas? Who ?

Early today, we get a sound bite/ transcript from Biden, who claims the very same. Babies were beheaded. And, he saw it.

White House press " calls back the claims of Biden....and claims he mis-spoke.

Tonight ( early am hours in Israel) the IDF dude says indeed, that babies were beheaded. On live recording.

Again, we now get more 'White House says"....nope..didn't happen.

Which is it? Anyone?
This is an X account that posted an image (I won't share it here) and they are saying it happened. I believe what we first heard is the truth, the walk back is an attempt to control the narrative.

Just another word of thanks to you, @Dotta, for the articles you share from your country. IMO, they've been among the best explanations of the situation.

The laws of war must be upheld - UN

The United Nations (UN) humanitarian relief agency has called for an immediate release of all hostages in the conflict.

Its chief Martin Griffiths said in a statement that his call to all sides was "unequivocal":

“The laws of war must be upheld. Those held captive must be treated humanely. Hostages must be released without delay."
Martin GriffithsUN humanitarian aid chief

They don't take hostages to play cards with them. Militants don't care about being "humane". Never negotiate with terrorists.

Aren't Hamas Palestinian? I understand the human need/ want to separate them but terrorism and the Palestinians go way back. These are just the latest.

It's incredibly sad that Palestinians throughout the region are treated horribly, refugees are allowed into countries but cannot become citizens and are not treated equally - even having been there 75 years or more (Egypt).

But at the same time, they cause so much death and destruction in their host countries. See Jordan's Black September and the Lebanese Civil War. Just this summer infighting broke out at a Lebanese Palestinian camp causing deaths. If you were raised on hopelessness, hatred, and violence it's all you know.

The Gaza strip is far, far from being the worst living conditions for Palestinians. Yet they can't settle, take the billions of aid they've received, and create a decent life for themselves.

I don't know any answers but I know that when Hamas is wiped out another Palestinian terror group will just take their place.

Gaza City hospital struggling as fuel runs low

Rushdi Abu Alouf
Reporting from Gaza City

This morning, I visited the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, where 2,000 displaced people are sheltering.

The hospital is struggling to cope with the number of injured people with a very limited amount of fuel left. All but essential treatment has been suspended to focus only on life-saving operations.

I met a woman who was injured. She was lying on a bed and told me she had been waiting hours to get surgery on her leg. She was told by the doctor that she is not on the priority list.

Israeli soldiers sent to bolster border with Lebanon

Anna Foster
Reporting from the Israel-Lebanon border

Of the 300,000 Israeli reserve soldiers being mobilised right now, a large chunk are being sent to reinforce the northern border with Lebanon.

That's because another militant group poses a threat here too.

Hezbollah - like Hamas - has been designated a terrorist organisation by the UK, US and other countries.

Backed by Iran, it has a strong military and political presence in Lebanon, and wields considerable power in a country without a functioning government or president.

For days there have been exchanges of fire across the border between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.

Palestinian militant groups in Lebanon have been involved too. All of this is dangerous.
If the situation escalates and a new front opens up in this war - plunging Israel into another full-scale conflict with Lebanon - the effect would reverberate around the region.

Israeli military chief admits failures to prevent attacks

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff has spoken to the media for the first time since Hamas attacked Israel last Saturday.

"The IDF is responsible for the security of the country and its citizens," Lt Gen Herzi Halevi said, "and on Saturday morning in the area surrounding the Gaza Strip, we did not handle it".

“We will learn, we will investigate, but now is the time for war.”
Lt Gen Herzi HaleviIsrael Defense Forces

Halevi was also asked about the hostages being held in Gaza - estimated to be at least 150 - and he replied: "The price of war is high and difficult. We will do everything to bring the captives back home."

Like a lot of crime cases the suspect before known is described as a crazed monster for doing what was done. Then when caught and ID’d the suspects life is exposed and then they are felt sorry for by media about their terrible life growing up.

I see the same happening here.

Warning sirens have sounded in northern Israel.

The military said it “launched an interceptor following an aerial identification” and was investigating the cause.

That's what happens when foreign "humanitarian aid" ends up in the wrong hands...
Ita.
I'd questioned the 6 billion in frozen funds released, and was answered in another post that Qatar has it; and it has not been accessed ?

Question : Are we to trust that information ?
Also, is it possible that Iran has used any of this to assist Hamas ?
At this time I'd think the funds could be refrozen; if it can be proven that any of this was used to help train, provide assistance via vehicles/gliders, or arm Hamas.
At least it should be an option.
Omo.

Israel says Iran supports Hamas to the tune of some $100 million dollars a year. The US State Department in 2021 said that the group receives funding, weapons, and training from Iran, as well as some funds that are raised in Gulf Arab countries.

Iran’s paramilitary allies in the region – namely Lebanon’s Shia armed group Hezbollah – have repeatedly boasted about an ironclad security coordination with Palestinian Islamist groups. (Much of the Western world and some Arab countries consider Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad to be terrorist groups.)
