MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man is charged with murder after police said he killed his wife while on the couple’s honeymoon in Fiji.

Authorities said Bradley Robert Dawson, 38, murdered his wife Christe Chen Dawson, 36, at a resort in the Yasawa Islands.

The couple lived in a new home on Elzey Avenue in the Cooper-Young area of Memphis. One of the couple’s neighbors said the wife was elated about their trip to Fiji for their honeymoon.

Christe Chen Dawson graduated from the University of Tennessee and worked at Kroger as a pharmacist.

A US national who was slapped a murder charge for the killing of a woman in a hotel in the West has been remanded by the Lautoka Magistrates Court.

Bradley Robert Dawson was produced before Magistrate Sekonaia Vodokisolomone earlier today to answer to a count of murder.

Mr Vodokisolomone ordered that all applications be made in the high court because the offence is an indictable one.

The court heard that Dawson was alleged to have murdered Christe Chan on July 9.

The accused also understood the charge after it was read out to him in court and defence counsel Iqbal Khan requested that they would file for proper bail application in the high court.

A Memphis, Tenn., man has been charged with murder in Fiji after allegedly murdering his wife at a resort in the Yasawa Islands.

Authorities allege Bradley Robert Dawson murdered Christe Chen on July 9 while the couple was on their honeymoon, according to a Fiji Sun article published last Thursday and FOX 13 Memphis.

Dawson, 38, and Chen, 36, had traveled to Fiji for their honeymoon, and Dawson's attorney confirmed to FOX 13 Memphis on Monday that Chen's body was found inside a hotel room, though he said he could not confirm the manner in which Chen died. Dawson maintains his innocence, his attorney says.

Last Wednesday, Dawson appeared before a Magistrates Court in Lautoka, Fiji's second-largest city, where the magistrate confirmed that Dawson had allegedly committed "an indictable offense," the Fiji Sun reports. The case has been transferred to Fiji's High Court in Lautoka, where Dawson is set to appear in court again on July 27, according to the Sun.

The murder allegedly happened at Fiji's Turtle Island Resort, a luxury island resort in the Yasawa Islands that advertises "pure indulgence, relaxation and romance at one of the most sought-after destinations in the world," on its website.

Turtle Island Resort did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment Tuesday.

The resort, which served as the location for the 1980 Brooke Shields film The Blue Lagoon, takes only 14 couples as guests at a time and offers visitors access to private beaches and amenities like horseback riding.

On Feb. 18, Bradley Robert Dawson and Christe Chen got married after what one acquaintance described as a “whirlwind romance.” The next day, they threw an intimate party for about 20 people at a historic inn in their hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.

“Thank you to all the amazing vendors who helped us put this gorgeous little ceremony in just 26 days,” their wedding planner wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post. “Thank you to Brad & Christe for trusting #BellaBaxterEvents with your special day.”

[..]

But just over five months later, Dawson sits in jail, accused of murdering his new bride while on their South Pacific honeymoon.

“How tragic,” Joelle Scholl, who sold Chen her wedding dress, told The Daily Beast on Tuesday. “Our brides are like family.”

Dawson allegedly killed Chen on July 9 at a luxury resort in Fiji’s Yasawa Islands, the Fiji Sun reported. He was uncooperative with authorities after Chen’s death, said police, who asked a judge to order Dawson to submit to a DNA test after initially refusing, according to the outlet.

Iqbal Khan, Dawson’s lawyer, did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast’s request for comment on Tuesday. No further details have been released about the circumstances of Chen’s death or how she died, but Khan confirmed to local Fox affiliate WHBQ-TV that Chen’s remains were discovered inside the newlywed couple’s hotel room. Dawson, who is charged with one count of murder, “maintains his innocence,” according to Khan.

The Fiji Sun reported authorities requested a judge order Dawson to submit a DNA sample after the defendant refused the forensics tests following the July 9 slaying.

Chen, a University of Tennessee graduate, worked as a pharmacist at a Kroger in the Memphis area, where the newlyweds lived, Fox 13 Memphis reports. She was an award-winning pharmaceutical scientist. She was also a Community Pharmacy Resident at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She recently received a grant that would help her improve "patient care by building deeper relationships."

"I am excited to see the improvement in medication adherence after patients receive resources to help their disparities," she said after receiving her grant. "The grant will give me a way to deliver training to pharmacy personnel, as well as present this idea to other pharmacists throughout the nation. "

Dawson worked as an information technology professional at Youth Villages, a non-profit that works with children. He has been suspended as a result of the allegations.

The case was transferred to Fiji's High Court in Lautoka last week. Dawson is scheduled to appear there on July 27, according to the Sun.

A NEWLYWED bride was found dead in a hotel room with suspicion pointing toward the husband, who allegedly fled the scene.

Christe Chen Dawson, 39, was found dead while on a luxurious Fiji honeymoon with her 38-year-old groom, Bradley Robert Dawson.

Bradley is a prime suspect in Christe's murder after she was found murdered on July 9, the Fiji court alleges.

The alleged murder happened at Fiji's Turtle Island Resort in the Yasawa Islands, which is described as a luxury five-star destination.

The husband was "nowhere to be found" at the scene of the crime, but police eventually caught him and took him into custody, according to the Daily Mail.

Although Bradley's attorney, Iqbal Khan, confirmed that Christe's body was found inside a hotel room, he told FOX13 that he could not confirm how Christe died.

[..]

Forensic tests must be made at the request of the High Court, which could give prosecutors another chance at DNA evidence.

As of Thursday, Bradley was set to remain in custody for 14 days and then appear at the High Court in Lautoka on July 27.

Bradley's lawyer is currently trying to get a bond for his client.

When reached for comment on Tuesday, the Turtle Island Resort told The Sun:

"We can confirm that an incident took place between a couple at the Island on July 9th, which has resulted in a tragic outcome and charges being laid.

"We cooperated fully with the police, who conducted a thorough investigation and have now left the Island."

The hotel ended by saying: "We are deeply saddened by the event and send our sincerest condolences to Ms Chen's family and friends."

The couple resided in the Cooper-Young area of Memphis.

The mystery continues.

When I first saw this on the wire, the husband was missing! He's since been located, fortunately -- and charged with her death.

Wonder if she discovered something on her husband's computer or phone and confronted him about it ?
And he flew into a rage ?

Horrible, awful case.
On a trip that was supposed to be fun and filled with memories.

Rest in gentle peace, Christe !!!
My condolences to her shattered loved ones. :(

I wonder about BD's past (any history of mistreating women, legal troubles, social problems?)

He had it all - a career, beautiful house, new spouse who was clearly beloved/ intelligent/ someone it would have been so fun to be with -- why did he allegedly steal her dreams and life away? And in return throw away his own dream-life?

It crossed my mind when reading about this case that maybe it was a hotel employee or a stalker from the area ?
However ...... BD fled.
If you did nothing or it was an accident, you stay and get medical help if applicable or explain yourself to the authorities.
The worst thing in the world is to run.
Speaks volumes, just my .02.

A "whirlwind romance".

Seeing that she has been murdered, the "whirlwind romance" makes me suspicious.

I wonder if she really did not know who/what he was as a person. Are there any red flags in his past?

MOO.

She had suffered multiple traumatic injuries to her body, and blunt force trauma to the head, according to a post-mortem exam report

BD, the husband, claimed they'd had a fight.
Multiple injuries sounds like a prolonged and maybe one-sided assault ?

The local on the island he'd escaped to, said the bruises on his palms and feet looked like he'd injured himself falling on coral ?
I wonder if he had scratches on his body ?
Poor Christe.
What an agonizing death.

He can't say she simply fell and hit her head now.
But it appears that he's pleading not guilty ?

From above link :

Ratulele said Dawson kept insisting on calling police and told villagers who had started to gather that he was very drunk.
Working on an excuse ?

There should be security cameras showing his demeanor, before and after leaving their room.
My .02.
