It's pretty typical running attire, imo/e. It can be hot and humid in Memphis at 4:30am most any day but in the dead of winter, but especially early September. MOO and IME.

The Fletcher case highlights the rise of kidnappings in Shelby County as a whole.

According to the TBI’s Crime Insight website, there were 735 kidnappings reported in Shelby County in 2021, with 684 being reported in Memphis alone.

Some students at the University of Memphis are shocked at this happening so close to the campus.

“After hearing about this morning’s kidnapping, I am very concerned about my safety,” said Emily Carter, a sophomore majoring in pre-nursing. “Memphis always seemed to me to be a very safe campus, especially at night and in the early hours of the morning. Discovering that the kidnapping occurred on campus by Carpenter Complex in the early morning really worried me, especially given how many campus police officers I typically see on campus.”

When asked about whether or not they were concerned about their safety after the kidnapping, Carter said, “I am definitely concerned about my safety after today’s incident. I worry about the security on campus, especially.”

Two blocks away from Fletcher’s house, the Second Presbyterian Church held a prayer vigil for Fletcher, who is also a member of the church.

A missing person report was made to the Memphis Police Department this morning, September 2, 2022 at 7:00 AM. A woman who regularly runs on Central Avenue was reported missing after not returning home. Her cell phone and water bottle were discovered in front of a house in the 3800 block of Central that is owned by the University. A male approached her at approximately 4:30 AM in the middle of Central Avenue and appeared to leave with her in an unknown vehicle following a brief struggle.

The University Police Department is assisting the Memphis Police Department in investigating this incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the University Police or the Memphis Police Department.

Apparently it was common for her to run this early in the AM. Was it mentioned anywhere that she carried some sort of protective/ self defense device ? I would think most women who run, especially in the dark, would. If she did, would she have time to use it as she is grabbed ? I am mostly wondering because I think being grabbed , one would be mostly shocked, not ready to grab the pepper spray/ whatever it is. Could that have also been dropped someplace ?

I don’t think most female runners carry spray or mace. There’s obviously a risk to running alone, you know it, but the chances are so slim………most likely the abduction/rape happens so quickly that you won’t have time to get it out.

Outside Fletcher’s house at the intersection of Carr Avenue and South Willett Street, family and friends of the victim gathered for an impromptu vigil.

Surrounding them were officers from the MPD and agents from the TBI. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives (ATF) were also on the scene.
