TX - Cameron Redus, 23, UIW student, fatally shot by campus PD officer, 6 Dec 2013

Do you have the link for the video you mention? I've looked back a few pages and can't find it. It does sound like a case I posted a thread about before on a Tallahassee, Fl. case. The woman ended up with severe facial and body injuries, is suing the city, the city commissioners have reprimanded both officers and put them on leave, I think one left the force, and a new chief was hired. Not such an acceptable action those officers took after all. It's been a big scandal.

Respect for authority is good to a certain extent. That's what the
German's had for Hitler. It's not always good to follow the leader. I respect the police but not unquestioningly. They make mistakes just like anyone else. Check out all the cases here about corrupt LE and military. From everything I have read, I am not sure this officer had the reason or right to shoot Cameron to death. The case has questions that need to be answered and the investigation is still going on. The DA investigation is yet to begin and may be months before all the reports and audio are released. How can anyone be so sure that the death was justified at this point. I will wait until the final finding from the DA. In the meantime we should be able to discuss news that comes out and what we think about it.

I think LC was referring to this earlier post?

A little O/T but kudos to the Hamilton police officers involved in this arrest! Of course they didn't have to try to wrest their batons away from the suspect, or tell her 56 times to stop resisting ;)

Oops I mean this one! Hahahaha! I was so proud of myself for figuring out how to multi-quote and then quoted the wrong post!

Paragirl, thanks! You're doing good; I just figured out multi-quotes last year.

OK, that was a good example; they worked on it together and got the person restrained without using excessive force.

But the bad example I gave before is more comparable to what Carter did. The difference is that there were several other officers around who did not do anything to stop the abuse of the woman. Those officers also fudged on the time of the incident, how long it took and did not tell the truth about what happened. The dept. has had to completely rewrite the rules to instruct how reports are to be written.

"SAN ANTONIO -- An autopsy report released to the I-Team Thursday indicates a University of the Incarnate Word student shot and killed in December likely died from a gunshot wound to this back."

*

"The medical examiner did note the bullet that entered Redus' back ended up lodged in the sac surrounding his heart, and was "the most immediately lethal".

The bullet entered the back, severed Redus' spinal cord and struck a major blood vessel in his chest as well as his heart, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner.

The report also indicates the gunshot wound to the eye could have been lethal."

Much more ...

I'm sorry, my post was misleading. I haven't reviewed the official autopsy report. I only reviewed 2 MSM articles describing it in detail.

While still can find no printed complete autopsy yet, I do recommend KSAT's coverage here -- includes 13 past video links to story station has run plus four complete statments and over 200 comments from readers beneath it all.

Just after my post earlier here today, I emailed Dillon Collier at KENS5
to ask if he could post the report itself.
I got a message- that he opened email, but nothing else back yet.

In light of the little bit we know now from the autopsy report, specifically the 'shot in the back', I found some of the information in this early article about the student killing, interesting:

What we know so far about the fatal shooting of UIW student Cameron Redus by campus police
Posted on December 11, 2013 | BY JOHN TEDESCO

snip

"At a press conference on Monday, (Monday December 9, 2013 - 3 days after the shooting.) (Alamo Heights) Police Chief Richard Pruitt offered the most detailed account of what happened. He said Carter had gone to a nearby Whataburger around 2 a.m. to pick up food for himself and a colleague:"

"As the officer was returning to duty, driving north on Broadway near Hildebrand Avenue in his marked pickup, a tan Ford Ranger sped past in a construction zone in the rain, Pruitt said. Then Carter observed the Ranger hit a curb, causing it to swerve left into the opposite lanes, Pruitt said."

So, I looked at Wunderground historical record for Friday December 6, 2013 for San Antonio and found that there was between 1/100th and 6/100ths of an inch over the course of the entire day! To me, that's not rain.

From the article:

"Carter’s pickup truck had a dashboard camera, but it had become unglued from its mounting after a cold front blew through San Antonio. But Carter was wearing a body microphone, and police have reviewed an audio recording of what happened next:"

Again, with an assist from Wunderground historical records, it seems that on November 27, 28, and 29th there were recorded lows of 35, 33, and 34 degrees respectively. IF it was during that period of time that the dashboard camera became unglued because of a cold snap, that is still 5 days that it could have been repaired. It should be a requirement that all police vehicles carry "JB Weld" for just such circumstances. It just isn't that difficult to fix things like that.
On the night of December 5th, morning of December 6th, the dropped again but there is no indication that the camera came unglued just before the shooting.

Pruitt:

"At some point, Carter took out his collapsible baton to protect himself, Pruitt said.

Although there was “a very stark difference” between Carter’s size and the smaller student, Redus managed to take the baton away, pin the officer against a wall and hit him several times on the head and arm with the baton, Pruitt said. The rain and rocky landscaping might have made it hard for the officer to keep his footing, Pruitt said."

The physical size difference? Believable? The itty bitty rain again?

Pruitt:

"Carter managed to get the baton back, and the struggle continued until Redus broke free, according to police.

Drawing his .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol, Carter then warned Redus four times to stop or he would shoot, Pruitt said. Then, Carter told police, Redus charged him with his arm raised as if to hit him.

Carter fired his gun six times, hitting Redus five times at close range — in the chest, neck, eye, arm and thigh — officials said."

And, we now know:

"According to the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office, Redus was shot in the left eye, upper chest, upper back, left elbow and right hip during a struggle with Cpl. Chris Carter during the early morning hours of Dec. 6."

"The report stated that the gunshot wound to the upper back is "the most immediately lethal" and the gunshot wound to the left eye "could be classified as fatal."" - From: http://www.ksat.com/news/autopsy-report-uiw-student-cameron-redus-shot-five-times/25074230

Those are some of the things that struck me. The mysanantonio article is a good article and worth rereading, in my opinion.

**Warning - the autopsy report is detailed and graphic**
Two of the shots, both rated lethal or potentially fatal by the coroner, raise serious doubts about Carter’s version that he shot Redus as the unarmed student charged him with an upraised arm and fist. The report does not attempt to identify the sequence of shots, but the two most lethal shots are inconsistent with Carter’s version of events.

“Gunshot #1″ entered Redus’ left eye socket at close enough range to leave stippling, or powder burns. It exited nine inches lower than its point of entry through the victim’s neck, suggesting Carter was above the victim and pointing his weapon downward.

“Gunshot #3,” which also showed some degree of stippling, shows that Carter shot Redus in the upper back. The bullet severed his spinal cord and then struck his heart. This shot also traveled downward from its point of entry. Both shots likely would have resulted in Redus’ death.

On anniversary of UIW student’s death, family still waits for grand jury
Student fatally shot one year ago today
By Drew Joseph
December 5, 2014
A year ago today, University of the Incarnate Word police Cpl. Christopher Carter shot and killed 23-year-old senior Robert Cameron Redus, but the case still has not been presented to a grand jury to determine if the officer should be indicted.

In a much shorter span of time, grand juries decided not to indict police officers in Ferguson, Missouri, and in New York who killed unarmed people, making international news and sparking nationwide protests. Unlike both of those cases, in which the officer was white and the person killed was black, the Redus case has not raised racial issues.

The speed at which those cases went before grand juries — Michael Brown was killed in August in Ferguson and Eric Garner in July in New York — has friends and family of Redus asking what’s taking so long.
