'Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney told the outlet that the victim is believed to be between 17 and 23 years old and likely from outside the county — part of the reason the case has baffled police for so long.'

Indeed - I think WGS against the Chinese databases - which I’m sure must be massive and really well annotated due to a lower degree of concern for the integrity of the individual - is the only way to ensure likely expedient progress.

Still, they could get lucky without it. You never know. Maybe test against Michael Pak and his possible trafficking entourage while they’re at it.

I’m not that excited about the microbial DNA, whether it’s metagenomics or not. It will at best narrow down TOD. I’m not sure what good that will do in this context.

Does anyone know if Yim Yeung Tsui has been excluded? He was a SUNY student at Stony Brook, That's about 45 minutes from Gilgo. He is from southern China. His height and age are in range given for the Doe. "Yeung" is the Cantonese romanization for the Han surname "Yang." "Tsui" is a Han surname. He disappeared in 1998. He lived like 20 miles away from Heuermann's house.

Has he been ruled out?

Maybe we should look at cases of missing Asian women?
I’ve also heard that identifying sex solely based on skeletal remains isn’t always spot-on. This could have been an intersex female or even a cis female

But that wasn't the case here. They have a DNA profile, that's why we know what cultural group this individual was likely born into.

Wish Rex would admit where he found this poor Doe and the circumstances so we could have slightly more clues as to their identity... I know it's not 100% that he killed them, but seems like a strong possibility especially with the Internet searches. I hope they get their identity back one day.

DNA doesn't always definitively prove sex assigned at birth either though. There are intersex conditions that will give someone assigned female at birth XY chromosomes. Women with these conditions generally won't know about it until puberty when the lack of a period will lead to medical investigation, but if you're living in poverty in a country where you don't have the option of going to a doctor, or your parents won't take you, you might never even know.

I do think it's much more likely that this person was a trans woman (or gender diverse transfemme etc) though.
