Brecon residents have taken to the streets to help find missing missing pensioner Rita.

The community is taking part in the search to find the 96-year-old who has been missing for around 12 hours in the town.

A helicopter has been sited over the town this evening, with reports of its circulating over the Promenade and Watergate.

Other Brecon locals have reported seeing Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service searching the river Usk.

Rita - whose surname has not been released by officers - is from Brecon, Powys, and was last seen at 10:20 GMT on Saturday.

Dyfed-Powys Police said it was "concerned for her welfare", and asked anyone with information to get in touch.

I think it’s sensible to protect the privacy of a missing person & their family, particularly in the case of the elderly.

If her surname is given & in the event of her turning up safe, this could make her more vulnerable to crime.

We have the information we need, including a photograph.

The search for a missing 96-year-old woman from Brecon has entered a second day, with police saying they are growing increasingly concerned for her welfare.

Rita, whose surname has not been released by police, was last seen at around 10:20 on Saturday morning.

Mountain rescue teams in the Brecon Beacons and nearby residents have been helping out in searches for a missing 96-year-old woman who has not been seen for more than 24 hours.

Dyfed-Powys police in south Wales said on Sunday they were becoming increasingly concerned for the woman, whom they named as Rita, but did not give her surname.

Rita is missing from where she lives in Brecon, a picturesque and historic market town on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. Police said local residents would see an increased police presence in Brecon as inquires continued.

Searches were also being conducted by Brecon mountain rescue, Mid and West Wales fire service and the National Police Air Service.

The Brecon & Radnor Express reported that dozens of local residents had taken to the streets to help in the search for Rita. Some posted on social media to encourage people in Brecon to search any accessible areas of their property such as gardens, greenhouses, garages and sheds.

Fay Jones, the Conservative MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, appealed on Twitter: “Please everyone – eyes peeled. Rita’s family and friends are desperately worried. It’s been reassuring to hear helicopters over Brecon all day but Rita needs to be found ASAP. Please get in touch if you have any information #FindRita.”

Fire crews were reported to be searching the River Usk.

With recent night-time temperatures being around the 2°C - 5°C mark, I can't see her surviving long outside, sadly.
It would be very difficult for anyone, let alone a 96 year old lady.

MISSING UPDATE | A multi-agency search is continuing today for 96-year-old Rita, who is missing from Brecon.

Rita was last seen at 10.20am, Saturday 26th February 2022 and may be wearing a fleece jumper with a leaf design

An extensive, large scale multi-agency search has been taking place in Brecon and the surrounding area, since the report was received, involving the Police Search Team, Brecon Mountain Rescue, Mid & West Wales Fire Service & National Police Air Service

Inspector Brian Jones, leading the search, said

“The search is continuing today and we are asking local residents to check their outbuildings, such as garages and sheds, in case Rita has sought shelter.

"We are also asking the public to check and review their private CCTV cameras, ring video doorbells, GoPros, Dash cam footage or any other source of video imagery that may capture Rita in and around the Brecon on Saturday 26th February.

”We are supporting Rita’s family with specially trained officers during this very difficult time and are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.”

MISSING UPDATE | The family have kindly provided a new photo of Rita, who was last seen at 10.20am, Saturday 26th February 2022 in Brecon.

A photo of the jacket she is believed to be wearing, described as a soft woollen fleece type, green coloured hooded jacket, is also being released.

Members of the public will see an increased police presence in Brecon Town today as searches continue.

We are supporting Rita’s family with specially trained officers during this very difficult time and are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and Heddlu Dyfed-Powys Police are continuing the search for a 96-year-old woman from Brecon. The missing woman was last seen Saturday around 11 am in Brecon town. The team has deployed specialist Swiftwater rescue search teams, kayak teams, land search teams and drone teams in the ongoing search.
We ask the members of the public check their gardens and outbuildings anywhere in the town and if they have CCTV please ring 101 and let Dyfed Powys Police know if you have any footage from Saturday morning.
We would also encourage members of the public to stay away from riverbanks and while we appreciate people want to help it is important that everybody stays safe.

During the search the team were called to an unrelated incident to assist Dyfed Powys Police officers with reports of a young woman in distress in the river Usk in Brecon. The young lady was assisted to safety unharmed.

The search for 96-year-old Rita has entered its sixth day with emergency services showing no sign of reducing their efforts to find the Brecon pensioner.

Dyfed-Powys Police and Brecon Mountain Rescue Team have searched the town and its surrounding areas tirelessly for Rita who was last seen at 10.20am on Saturday.

It is understood that Brecon MRT have set up an incident room at the 1st Brecon Scout Group Hut on Scout Lane in the town as they continue to search for Rita.

Sad update


A body has been found in the search for a missing 96-year-old woman.

Rita - whose surname has not been released by Dyfed-Powys Police - is from Brecon, Powys, and was last seen at 10:20 GMT on 26 February.

The force said her family had been informed of the discovery and were being supported by specialist officers.

Firefighters, mountain rescue and the National Police Air Service were all involved in the search for Rita.
