Found Deceased GA - University of Georgia Laken Hope Riley, 22, found dead near University of Georgia intramural fields, foul play suspected, 22 Feb 2024

WANF requested the 911 call, but the request was denied, under O.C.G.A. § 50-18-72 (a) (26.1), which states that investigators can withhold it when a death is captured on the recording.

On Wednesday, an Athens-Clarke County Police lieutenant said “no dialogue exists” on the call, adding that “911 calls are part of the investigation, " which is why it has not been released.
Bbm.
If there's no dialogue, then why not release it ?
Just wondering.
Am also thinking there might have been a second perp with the killer ?
Omo.

They don’t want the sounds of the attack and/or the sounds of her dying in the public domain. There should be some respect shown the victim, her family, friends and the community. It will likely be played at trial. The public may or may not hear it at that point.

Ok, thanks, that makes sense.
I was just thinking there'd only be traffic noises if the trail was close enough to the road by the campus.
Wasn't considering that 'no dialogue' could mean cries for help or pain -- but not spoken words.

Yeah, there has been at least one notable case where that kind of death audio has been made public, and it traumatised the family horrendously.

The bill's author said it passed with bipartisan support.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the “Laken Riley Act,” Georgia Rep. Mike Collins announced Thursday.

The bill is named after the 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student who was murdered on the University of Georgia campus last month and could impact Georgia’s immigration policies.

Collins, R-Ga., authored the bill, which would require federal authorities to detain undocumented immigrants charged with theft in the U.S.

The Venezuelan migrant charged with murdering Laken Riley was waved through the US border and not required to check in with authorities until two years later, an investigation by The Post can reveal.

Jose Ibarra, 26 — now marked by authorities as part of the deadly El Tren Del Aragua gang, according to sources — was arrested for illegally crossing into the US in September 2022.

After less than 24 hours in custody, he was released on parole and given free rein in the US until October 2024, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement insiders.

Ibarra made his way to New York City where he appeared carefree, living in a shelter provided by the city and posting pictures of him smiling at Big Apple landmarks.

He was even arrested by police in the city but let go, before fleeing to Georgia to meet his allegedly violent brother who had also been allowed in the country but cut off an ankle monitor to evade authorities.

If this is true, this shows multiple failures of a system that is not being enforced.

But they are actually not failures. They are policy in certain jurisdictions.

We often discuss here the causative cultural issues, toxic masculinity, etc… ‘Saving the next girl’ might mean looking at these policy decisions not to arrest ‘newcomers’ who commit criminal acts..in order to protect them from deportation.

Regarding the 911 call.... if this call did seem to record her last moments then why would authorities not be looking for her prior to her friend calling the report her missing? Seems if a murder was recorded on a 911 call and it was disturbing enough that it can't be released due to what is said/heard, then why would that not initiate an immediate tracing or ping of the phone's last known location in order to find the person that was in such distress?

The arrest report says she was murdered between 9 and 1 so I'd assume then she left to run at 9am or so. The friend reported her missing just after noon. When was this 911 call made? If it was so disturbing they can't release it, then were police already looking for her?

The sounds on the call may not have been disturbing or significant enough by themselves to require LE to try to find the caller. A family member of mine used to work for 911 in a NC county. There were LOTS of hangup-type calls. And not all could be investigated or needed to be. Some were "butt calls" while others were misdials of NC's 919 area code. Even when people knew they made a mistake, they often just hung up vs staying on the line to say "sorry." But now that it's known this caller was killed, the sounds-- whatever they were-- may be interpreted quite differently. Certainly they would be by her family members and close personal friends.

BBM. I'm not sure whether it is policy decisions or just lack of communication but hopefully, yesterday's House passage of the Laken Riley Act will be a step in the right direction and various government agencies will better communicate with one another.

Collins said in the announcement of the bill’s passage in the House that it “addresses one of the federal policy issues related to Laken Riley’s murder,” specifically that her accused killer Jose Ibarra and his brother Diego Ibarra had been cited for shoplifting by the Athens-Clarke Police Department before her death.

“If local law enforcement had called ICE, and ICE issued a detainer and picked him up, Laken Riley would be alive,” Collins said in a statement.

Similarly directed legislation has already passed in the Georgia General Assembly. House Bill 1105 specifically targets sanctuary policies, such as those in Athens-Clarke County, according to Collins, with the representative saying the sheriff refuses to honor ICE detainers.

This article is very concerning regarding his older brother and that brothers gang affiliation in tren de aragua as well as his lengthy criminal history just in the last year he has been in this country..

Assaulting border patrol agents

Illegally entering US (this was not through a port of entry.. this was him and 4 others sneaking in and being observed on camera and then being approached by border patrol and then attempting to flee and resist arrest while throwing the agents radio and attempting to bite him.

He then cut off his monitor and fled.

Arrested in Athens for DUI.. going 80 in a 40, failing to stop, resisting arrest, driving w/out license

2 days later police called out because his girlfriend said he took her phone and slapped her..

Then a month later shoplifting

Then another shoplifting incident

Failure to appear

AND he's in a dangerous Venezuelan gang called tren de aragua (read the article and the arrest documents listed in it)

Seems there were PLENTY of opportunities to do something about Diego Ibarra.. possibly it would have raised alarm bells about the other 2 brothers.. What we initally heard about Diego's record is nothing compared to what they disclosed yesterday at his bond hearing. Surely they didn't grant bond.

Oh and interesting tidbit in the court doc..

Diego was stopped because he was wearing an Adidas hat and officers were given a surveillance photo of the suspect in an Adidas hat. So we now learn that Jose was wearing an Adidas hat in the video that police have of him and the reason Diego was stopped the following morning is because he was wearing at hat that was identical to it.. so did Jose wear Diego's hat or do they have matching hats?

BBM. Rest assured, the wise Judge refused to grant bond. This guy and his brothers should have been tossed in jail for fraudulent green cards and the govn't agency employees who failed to do their jobs and throw them in jail should be fired. I'm shocked he worked for a Georgia public university.

Ibarra's public defender, Chauntillia Adaway, countered by saying Ibarra had no violent offenses and he has not been convicted of any crimes. She also stated that he was not a flight risk as he was seeking asylum from his native country, Venezuela and that there was no evidence showing that Ibarra had a passport.

She suggested that Judge Weisle grant Ibarra bond with conditions like limits on travel and implementing a curfew.

However, Judge Weisle ruled against that stating that Ibarra's actions are "negligible" and that he "has no business being in Georgia".

This is infuriating. I cannot imagine what her family is going through or how they are coping.

He has no business being in the United States. moo

'I stand before you, a heartbroken man,' Jason Riley said Wednesday afternoon.

'Part of my purpose has been taken. God gave me a beautiful daughter to father, protect, provide for and nurture. A man with an evil heart stole her life. He was in this country and in this state illegally,' he added.

My vision for every senator in this chamber is that you protect citizens from this illegal invasion,' Riley continued.

He turned to the fact that 'there are a million illegal aliens' in Georgia 'making families nervous' and cited Georgia's capital, Athens, where he was speaking held sanctuary policies.

'Please recognize Athens-Clarke as a sanctuary city, and this policy and the lack of action, led to the murder of my daughter,' he said.
