Accused murderer Lian Bin "Robert" Xie was motivated by "bitterness" and a "loss of face" when he crept into the home of his brother-in-law and killed him and his family with a "hammer-like instrument" as they slept in their beds, a court has heard.
In his opening address to Mr Xie's trial in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday, Crown prosecutor Mark Tedeschi, QC, said that the nature of the attacks on the family, and the fact that nothing was taken suggested that they were neither robberies nor sexual attacks
Mr Tedeschi said that, some time after the murders, Mr Xie told an inmate at Long Bay jail "information" that suggested the motive for the crimes was a "loss of face", something which had particular significant in Chinese culture.
Earlier, Mr Tedeschi outlined a series of factors that pointed to a single killer acting alone, and someone who knew the layout of the house intimately, as was the case with Mr Xie.
