The body of ABC employee Jill Meagher has been discovered buried in a shallow grave north-west of Melbourne this morning, as homicide squad detectives charged a man over her rape and murder.
Adrian Ernest Bayley faced an out-of-sessions court hearing just before 2.30am today, where he was charged with the rape and murder of Mrs Meagher in Brunswick on Saturday morning

It's around 6:40AM on Friday in Melbourne right now. And it's springtime. :spring:

I now no longer care a whit about about privacy in that there should be more CCTV and police should be allowed to run image matching searches of indentikits through Facebook and all pics uploaded to Facebook.

I wonder how many people called in after the CCTV footage came out and they recognised him .. I'm imagining they were innundated. So much for us thinking he was a 'junkie' type, he actually appears as a normal guy who works out doesn't he? Goes to show.

We were just talking about crime at work this morning - and not about this case specifically. The conversation was about all the steps we need to take just to do business these days and why? Because of CRIME.

I'm just getting so angry with the evil in this world. SO angry.

On the radio yesterday the police said they had hundreds of calls to crime stoppers.

It is very had to access criminal records and history here in Aust.
The police said when the charge sheet is read out in court it will give us more information.

Absolutely sickened and so so sad...I was following this all day today from work (I'm in the UK) and just...well, I have no words.
RIP Jill, I so wish that you had been protected - it's not fair!!!
I'm so so angry with this world today - so much evil. It scares me.
The little chink of light is that there are some wonderful, compassionate people here on WS.
I just have no words. *advertiser censored*

Yes Summer I am here, just been too shocked and sad to post since last night. My condolences to Jill's husband, family and friends.

I don't know about the Victorian legal process from now, other than it is probably similar to Queensland. Having confessed apparently and led police to the body there doesn't seem to be much doubt it was him. I imagine he would have had seen a lawyer by now especially if bail has been denied in the early morning court hearing.

We will have to wait and see what plea he enters. I think he must know he is not getting away with this crime and an early guilty plea may help him slightly in sentencing if there is discretion available to the judge.

I so hope the judge a) has no discretion and has to lock him up for life, or b) chooses to lock him up for life :please: - despicable thing he is. I feel ashamed I even breathe the same air as this "man".

Years ago this kind of crime would have been near impossible to solve so fast .. thank god for all the CCTV cameras!

Morning, Summer and all - I'm here too. Just saw this news that happened overnight. Not sure what specialist assistance I can provide, but will keep an eye on these threads in case. Also keeping an eye on the Allison B-C threads.

Awful news.

That Geelong incident mentions that the person was from some other area, and that he was given 3 months jail, as he was already on parole, and had spent most of his life in jail.

If it IS the same person, then perhaps the police already had his mugshots, and used face recognition technology (similar to what we mere plebs have access to now on iPhoto or Picasa etc).

Or else there is more more than one Adrian Bayley who is a villain too...

All I can think of is how lucky the police were that the lady who owns that Duchess Boutique installed such a good, high-definition, colour CCTV. And that the interaction between the accused and Jill occurred right outside the shop. That would just HAVE to be fate playing its part, if you believe in such things.

scary to think jills murderer may have never been caught without the cctv footage, she didnt know him and there would be nothing to link him to the crime unless his dna is on record, but evidence of that would have faded in time.

One other thing springs to mind - if this guy was the gym junkie that others have alluded to from his FB page etc, then perhaps - and this is only conjecture - he may have been fully into that gym culture including taking steroids, testosterone, supplements, etc, and this may have been one of the factors underlying his aggression and hyperactive libido problems.

Just a thought.
