CA CA - Jennifer Wilmer, 21, Willow Creek, 13 Sept 1993

Wonder who gave the info that she was going to the farm?

Just seems odd to me that if that were the case she would leave her ID at home.

The link to the Klaases is very coincidental, perhaps too much so?
I need to figure out how far Arcata is from Petaluma

I am jennifer Wilmers cousin. I recently came across this thread and was very interested in what some of you wrote. I have been trying to get her story featured on disappeared but I haven't been successful in finding any contact information. This is a very cold case but there are so many unanswered question I'm trying everything I can on my own to get this case reopened. So if any of you out there could help me or just want to talk about her case please message me.

Sincerely,
Jessica

I'm not sure if you already know, but 'Disappeared' is on hold at the moment and no further episodes are being made. But it is possibly Jennifer's case could fit into another program with a special angle, if there is a little more info to go on.

Everytime I see Jennifer's face, I recognise it with a start, but the why and how floats just out of reach. It's haunting me. I can't ever have seen her in life - I'm a continent away.

Her roommates and her boyfriend said she was going to the farm, along with the people who owned the farm. He shot himself in front of his new girlfriend a few years later

IMO - if there is any way to track down the roommates- they might have information that could help. Sometimes - years later - people will remember things or give information that never came out when first interviewed. Circumstances change. People change. The fact all belongings were left behind seems implausible that she left to hitchhike to a job interview.
Again - JMO.

I need to figure out how far Arcata is from Petaluma

Richard Alan Davis was living at his sister's house at the Coyote Valley Indian Rancheria, just north of Ukiah, at the time of Polly Klaas's murder. It's about 160 miles south of Arcata. There is another reservation, Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation, which is located about 15 miles north of Willow Creek. Has an Indian Casino there.

Some other details.

Arcata is home to Humboldt State University.

Willow Creek is located in Humboldt County, and Humboldt is known for its marijuana growing. Been doing it there for years and years, probably back to the 60s. When I visited there years ago, I was warned to be careful where I went.

I found this NY Times article on Humboldt.

Emerald Triangle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Emerald Triangle refers to a region in Northern California so named because it is the largest cannabis producing region in the United States. Mendocino County, Humboldt County, and Trinity County are the three counties in Northern California that make up this region.

Her roommates and her boyfriend said she was going to the farm, along with the people who owned the farm. He shot himself in front of his new girlfriend a few years later

Do you know if the girlfriend reported any issues that might have caused him to take his life? I'm tempted to think that he was tortured by guilt, but a suicide could be for any number of reasons (financial issues, addiction, clinical depression due to a chemical imbalance, etc.). I just wonder if the new girlfriend could shed any light due to things he might have said or confided in her.

I'm sorry your family is going through this; Jennifer's mother has my greatest admiration for her refusal to be brushed aside by LE.

Everytime I see Jennifer's face, I recognise it with a start, but the why and how floats just out of reach.

That was my first reaction also. She looks so familiar. Perhaps she looks like someone famous? Anyhow, I'm very interested to learn more about this farm.

I am so glad Jennifer's case is a featured case.
I wish the roommates could be found. They may have some ideas about what happened.
When I first read about this case, I really thought it was a random abduction.
I thought maybe a known perp had something to do with it, especially a serial killer who was living in Arcata-his last name was Ford and he was caught around 1998. I'm not sure if he was completely ruled out.
Now that Jennifer's cousin JessMilone has brought to light Jennifer's boyfriend's suicide, it really takes another direction for me.
I wonder who his new girlfriend was and if she can be found. There are many questions hanging in the air on this one.

Here is the note Jennifer left before leaving for the farm. Apparently she was going to walk from Hawkin's Bar west toward Willow Creek/Arcata. If you google map the main road, you can see it's a logging type road with dense trees on either side.
Clipped from "Long Island's Lost Girls" article.

So at 7:30 in the morning on Monday, Sept. 13, Jennifer set out to hitchhike the nine miles into "town" along Rt. 299. She left a note to her roommates:

Bye everybody,

Went to my 1st day at the farm. Wish me luck! Good luck to you, Mingo and see you in a few months. If someone could give food to the kitten as needed I'd appreciate it. Hopefully I'll see you folks later

YJade

I copied and pasted Jennifer's boyfriend's obituary from the Marin Independant Journal:

Tro David Patterson
June 26, 1970-August 29, 2003
Beloved son of Jay Patterson and Jeanie Patterson of Mill Valley, brother of Taylor and the grandson of Claire Patterson, a loving nephew of aunts and uncles. His young life has finally found eternal peace. His generosity, love and caring for others was unparalleled. For those who made his acquaintance, 'Do not let your grief be measured by his worth, for then your sorrow has no end'. His Memorial was held at Moon Stone Beach, Humboldt County, surrounded by friends and family and in the countryside he adored. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ritter Center, PO Box 3517, San Rafael, 94912.

Mystery solved.

That sounds a little flippant. Do you think no one should be trying to sleuth or solve this because "the boyfriend did it"?
Of course there is a possibility her boyfriend was responsible, but there is also a chance someone else is responsible.
If people start discussing this case and her former room mates and friends can be found, there is a chance someone will start talking and her family can finally know what happened.

I thought she looked familiar too - but I think it's because (to me) she resembles Karen Carpenter... So for those of us in an older age range :-0, maybe that is what we are seeing...

Maybe you can ask the editor of the area (very sparsely populated) to write an article on it.

And here's another small paper. Hawkins Bar is located in Trinity County.

http://www.trinityjournal.com/

Yes, this case really needs some investigative journalism. Hawkins Bar is tiny, perhaps the kind of place where rumors float around, etc.
I know the population there may be transient, but there may still be people around who lived there in 1993.
If Jennifer's last address can be located, maybe the landlord could be found, then the room mates. They could be anywhere in the world by now, but they may know something of value.
I really think if someone Jennifer knew harmed her, there would be some hint of it somewhere.

Jessica-
Not sure if you can answer these questions, but just a couple of things
Were all known perps from the area ruled out?
Did Jennifer's room mates keep in contact with her parents or family at all? Or did they just fall off the map?
Did the PI that was hired find out anything at all?
Is LE receptive to re-interviewing anyone if they can be located?
Thanks.

In regard to someone writing a fresh article, you could contact David Lohr. He wrote about Christine Walters, who disappeared from Arcata in 2008. I don't think the two cases are connected but maybe he would be interested in profiling both cases.
