Sacramento K Street shooting suspect Mtula Payton arrested in Las Vegas

A suspected gunman wanted on multiple murder counts in connection with the April shooting on K Street in downtown Sacramento that left 6 people dead and 12 injured, has been arrested.

Mtula Tashamby Payton was arrested in Las Vegas on Saturday, Sacramento police said. Detectives had learned Payton was living at an apartment complex in the city and worked with Las Vegas police for weeks to find out where.

Just tried to see if Payton was back in Sacramento jail yet. He is not appearing on there, so I went over to Nevada jail - and he is not there either.

I had "someone" here helping me get Sacramento County case #s - can anyone reading here to that? That way I can look him up in the County court site instead of jail.

Mtula Payton, one of the suspected shooters behind the K Street gang shootout that left six dead and 12 injured, has been booked into the Sacramento County Jail, records show.

He faces charges relating to drugs, possession of firearm by a felon, threats to commit a crime and murder. He also has enhancements to his charges for committing crimes while out on bail. Separate from the shootings, Payton has also been charged with three counts of EDD fraud related to pandemic aid.

5/3/22 Update: Sacramento County's DA & the city's police dept. announced new charges Tuesday in last month's deadly gang shootout that killed six people in downtown Sacramento. Sacramento County DA Anne Marie Schuper said that Dandrae Martin, Smiley Martin & Mtula Payton now face murder charges in the deaths of Johntaya Alexander, Melinda Davis & Yamile Martinez. There were enhancements for using a handgun in the commission of crimes. In Smiley’s case, he allegedly used an automatic 9 mm handgun. The two others also allegedly used 9mm handguns. All three men are also being charged with being felons in possession of firearms. Prosecutors said the three others killed—Devazia Turner, Sergio Harris & Joshua Hoye—were involved in the gun battle. Has not been found yet.
