ETA: here is a link to the overhead view of the field. The google image is dated 2017 (don't know specifically when). The lot was mowed but now it has deeper grass. Perhaps they can look to see if anything in the terrain is different.

Looking at the tent and the boxes in the background - forensic evidence LE is collecting?
 
I hope they are keeping their eye on Bacon and ensuring he doesn't flee. Just in case!!!

So last week he wasn't a suspect and now they are searching his house in case there is foul play?

I think LE are playing it "friendly" with Steven Bacon... I am sure they are watching him and know exactly where he is since he turned up last week...

It looks like there is one or more abandoned buildings on the property too.
 
I'm curious as to whether they have a search warrant, or if the property owner(s) simply gave them permission to search. From what I've read in online media is seems that SB was renting a basement apartment at 609 Bruce Ave. If you view the house from the back (from the west) you can see the door to the place where LE was searching a couple of weeks ago.

Clearly SB hasn't been cooperating or else they wouldn't be searching all around that property with a fine tooth comb.

The latest update from RCMP that I could find (half an hour ago):

In a statement today, Nanaimo RCMP said its Tactical Team was assisting with searches on the outside properties located at 601 and 609 Bruce Ave, and investigators were also executing a search warrant on the residence at 609 Bruce Ave.

Police say the searches are focused on the residence at 609 Bruce Ave and the front and back yard at 601 Bruce. They say given the amount of time the teenager has been missing, and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, foul play cannot be ruled out.

Yes, that seems to be the case:

The search began this morning when RCMP Tactical Team members, who are trained in search techniques, combed a field, outbuildings, bushes and debris from a collapsed wooden outbuilding at 601 and 609 Bruce Ave., located across from University Village shopping centre.

Just from the various msm pictures of the search it seems like they're looking for soft dirt (i.e. a grave) and other evidence of Makayla.

I've still not seen any mention as to whether SB has access to a vehicle.

If not, I wonder if that is why LE searched Colliery Dam Park area. It's easily walkable from SB's place. If they found no evidence of a crime scene at the Bruce Ave house (which I presume they didn't), then, perhaps they were looking for an isolated location nearby where a crime could take place unseen.

I wonder who else lived at that Bruce Ave address.

I'm still hoping that Kayla suddenly appears safe and sound! (But I don't expect it.)
 
O’Brien says 53 year old Kevin Bacon, a friend of Chang’s, has been located and police have spoken to him, at this point he is not a suspect but may have information that could help find the 16 year old girl.
She’s been missing now since March 17th.

So SB is not considered a suspect right now yet LE believes he may have information about Makayla. Not surprising, given that SB has a criminal history:

We’re learning new details about the 53 year old who lived at the home and was sometimes in the company of missing 16 year-old Makayla Chang.

In 1985 Steven Bacon was charged in Thunder Bay, Ontario with 23 criminal counts.

They included Armed Robbery, Forcible Confinement and Breach of Probation. His charges were dropped. It’s not clear if the same happened for his co-accused.

I still don't understand this business about SB wanting to adopt Makayla. According to dyannaON's link:

Clearly Makayla has bio family who are involved in her life and love her very much. So why would SB think it's a good thing to butt in, take her away from her family and adopt her? AFAIK he's not related to her. What does he think he can give her that her own family can't? :waitasec:
 
Makayla's father, serving a 6-month jail sentence, is interviewed in this article. (He indicates that both he and Makayla's mother have struggled with drug addiction and that is why they don't have custody of MC.

Chang said Bacon told him that Makayla reminded him of a daughter who died and whom he called “baby bird,” a pet name he was known to call Makayla. However, Bacon’s daughter Allison said he’s long been telling this falsehood, that she is dead.

If I were to guess....SB's been grooming her.
The letter he wrote to Kayla (part of which her grandmother read on the news) was over the top and inappropriate.

As SB's own daughter has said on a number of occasions, he is very manipulative.

Also from the linked article:
Makayla has two older half brothers, one of whom was arrested because he was parked outside of Bacon’s house for four days when Nanaimo RCMP were searching for Bacon. “He was sitting in a truck waiting for this guy to come home. The police were also watching. They arrested him and took him into custody.”
