WINNIPEG - Police in Winnipeg say they have recovered human remains while searching a landfill as part of an investigation into the killing of an Indigenous woman.

Officers started searching the landfill two weeks ago for the remains of 24-year-old Rebecca Contois.

Her partial remains were found last month in a garbage bin near a city apartment building.

Police say the remains discovered yesterday have not yet been identified.

Jeremy Anthony Michael Skibicki, who is 35, was charged with first-degree murder.

Police said at the time that they were not ruling out the possibility of additional victims.

More coming ...''

Ws thread..

''A large section of the landfill was sectioned off with no further dumping while the search took place.

Police said Wednesday they’re holding the scene at the landfill pending an autopsy of the remains.

“It’s just being held right now, waiting for those autopsy results to come through and see if the work can be completed at that time or if there’s more work to be done,” said Const. Dani McKinnon.''

''Police said the initial search area was about the size of four-to-six football fields — later narrowed down to the equivalent of one-and-a-half fields, but still a challenge given inclement weather and health hazards of searching a landfill.''

Such a shame, only 24 years old.

''The human remains found at the Brady Road landfill by Winnipeg police last week have been identified as those of Rebecca Contois, police said Tuesday afternoon.

The 24-year-old woman's family has been notified, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release.''

''Police believed some of her remains may have been taken to the landfill during a residential pickup, and conducted a search earlier this month.

The search involved an area the size of three or four football fields, and was conducted by officers fitted with respirators, methane detection equipment and protective gear.

Jeremy Anthony Micheal Skibicki, 35, has been charged with first-degree murder in Contois's death.

After Skibicki was arrested and charged in May, police said they believed there could be more victims, but as of last week none had been identified.''

From link,thanks..rbbm

''At the time of Contois’ death, police said they were investigating the possibility of additional victims.

Police said the additional victims, all women, were killed between March and May 2022. The first victim, 39-year-old Morgan Beatrice Harris of Winnipeg, is believed to have been killed on or around May 1.

The second victim, 26-year-old Marcedes Myran of Winnipeg, is believed to have been killed on or around May 4. Both Harris and Myran were members of Long Plain First Nation.''

''A fourth woman is believed to have been killed on or about March 15, 2022. Police believe the victim is an Indigenous woman in her mid-20s with an average build.

Police released a photo of a jacket similar to one the woman wore. The jacket is reversible, and contains a black and white pattern, the words “baby phat,” a fur hood, and a cat-like logo on the front and back of the jacket.''

The charges against Skibicki have not been proven in court.'

On another thread it was stated that the dangers to the dogs prevent their use at landfills. The sharp objects, bacteria, and high levels of methane can all be highly dangerous or fatal to a dog. Humans can rake through trash suited and booted for hazards, with ventilators. Dogs can't.

''Winnipeg police say the body of an Indigenous mother of four has been found in a city landfill.
Insp. Shawn Pike of the major crimes division said at 3 p.m. on Monday, staff at the Brady Landfill reported that a body had been found at an active area of the facility. The area was closed off and police responded, confirming a body had been found.

Police identified the woman as 33-year-old Linda Mary Beardy. A family member told CTV News Beardy was a mother of four children.''

''A statement from the Southern Chiefs' Organization (SCO) said Beardy was a member of the Lake St. Martin First Nation.
“First Nations citizens continue to live with the tragedy of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, two spirit, and gender-diverse people," SCO Grand Chief Jerry Daniels said in the statement.

Police said Beardy had been living in Winnipeg recently, but was not considered to be a missing person prior to her body being found.'

''DEATH NOT CONNECTED TO ALLEGED SERIAL KILLER CASE: POLICE

This news comes amid ongoing calls to search the Brady Landfill and the Prairie Green Landfill for the remains of four Indigenous women killed by alleged serial killer Jeremy Skibicki.
However, Pike said police do not believe this most recent discovery is related.''

Highlighted by me to ask, what do LE think happened to Linda Mary Beardy? (possibly OT but could Linda Beardy be related to Bill Beardy who assisted in Manitoba with the BC murder case in 2019? Idk... FWIW).

Respect to the family. May Linda rest in peace :(

''Billy Beardy discovered this burning SUV on July 22, while with his wife and daughter. It was later linked to B.C. homicide suspects Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky.''

There must be a second killer whose victims include 33 year old Indigenous women in the Winnipeg area, since the first suspected killer is in jail charged with first degree murder of a 24 year old in June 2022. Is it a copycat?

Two men who independently abduct and dismember women in the same area? How likely is that, yet it seems to be true with the discovery of a body in the same landfill in April 2023 after the first suspect is in jail for the June 2022 body?

What's the implication? The first suspect is innocent? Two suspects committed abductions and murders together? A second person who thinks exactly the same as a suspected serial murderer has emerged?

This most recent victim was AFAIK not dismembered. There doesn't seem to be many details regarding the circumstance, how Linda Mary Beardy ended up where she was found.

There are so many MMIW/MMIP cases it stands to reason that there might be at least two SKs operating (Skibiki being one).

People like this guy are a part of the problem (JMO):

"A former Dances With Wolves actor accused of leading a cult could be facing multiple felonies and life in prison after police said he sexually assaulted young Indigenous girls and took multiple wives during a period spanning two decades, court records obtained by The Associated Press show."

"According to a search warrant obtained by The Associated Press, Chasing Horse is believed to be the leader of a cult known as The Circle.

Las Vegas police noted in the warrant that they have identified at least six alleged victims and uncovered sexual allegations against Chasing Horse dating to the early 2000s in multiple states, including Montana, South Dakota and Nevada, where he has lived for about a decade.

According to the warrant, he was banished in 2015 from the Fort Peck Reservation in Poplar, Mont., amid allegations of human trafficking."

"Nathan Chasing Horse used spiritual traditions and their belief system as a tool to sexually assault young girls on numerous occasions," detectives wrote in the warrant, adding that his followers believed he could communicate with higher beings and referred to him as "Medicine Man" or "Holy Person."

Her body was found in an area where previous bodies were located, and in the same landfill where Indigenous groups want a thorough search through tons of garbage. What I find surprising is that her body was found even though she was not reported missing. Was her body put in a dumpster and then located at the landfill when the trucks were unloaded?

"Pike said Beardy was not reported missing prior to the discovery, and that there’s no information to suggest her death is connected to any other victims.
...

Beardy was a mother and a member of Lake St. Martin First Nation but living in Winnipeg at the time of her death, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization said in a statement."

The fact that she was found in an area where other bodies have been found is disturbing.

Hopefully there will be a complete M.E that might reveal whatever happened to Linda. If she were deceased and placed into a dumpster then moved to a landfill, there will likely be injuries to indicate this.

If Linda met with foul play, maybe the perpetrator knew that no one was looking for her? Maybe they made little effort to conceal her thinking she wouldn't be missed, found or ID'd?

Placing her body in a dump where Indigenous persons have been requesting searches when it's public knowledge that the searches are too risky... IMO the perpetrator is familiar with the area.

Well this just got strange..
April 6 2023 rbbm.
''Winnipeg police say they have no evidence to suggest the death of an Indigenous woman whose body was found in a landfill Monday was a homicide.

Police chief Danny Smyth says 33-year-old Linda Beardy was seen climbing into a garbage bin alone after exiting a store and was not seen afterward.

Smyth says the bin was picked up by a truck a few hours later, its contents were emptied and taken to a city-run landfill where Beardy’s body was found shortly afterward.

Smyth says the autopsy is ongoing, but there are no injuries that would point to a homicide.

Police say nothing unusual happened in the store and they do not know why Beardy went into the bin''.

Not exactly good news but preferable to murder (I suppose) :(

Hmm... did Linda enter the bin and die from unknown causes or was it the bin/truck that took her life?? Also wondering if drugs/alcohol played a role.

I've read that some municipalities and certain cities have started asking city sanitation workers to check dumpsters and bins prior to loading them onto trucks for this exact very reason. There is such a massive homelessness/drug epidemic going on (globally) that this kind of thing is becoming more common. I do not have links but they are out there. It's quite tragic.

Does she have any history of substance abuse? That's a very unusual choice to make. Unfortunate.

All of these stories are 'unfortunate'. Indigenous people of Canada have had a terrible go of it. Their culture was taken from them and they lost family members. I don't know what to do to help make things right. I'm disappointed with myself for not finding a way to even help a tiny bit.
<hugs> to anyone who is struggling.
