Ireland Ireland - Sligo, WhtMale, 50-70, aka 'Peter Bergmann', prostate cancer, Jun'09

Just wanted to add, the German BKA website linked in the first post lists as cause of death drowning, as does the Wikipedia page. It also states his age as late 50s or early 60s. Maybe this was added after this thread was started.

He was seen leaving with the purple bags 13 times yet purchased only eight 82c stamps (acc to Wikipedia page), so most likely he did not mail the items in the bag.

Is it possible he donated those items to a charity shop? Or simply gave them to homeless people?

I heard some people say he was a Nazi war criminal, even though he's far too young! (Clearly they know little about history.) If it were anything cloak and dagger like that, I'd say a Cold War German spy. To know where the CCTV cameras were makes it seems plausible, but still I think that's a bit of a stretch.

The UID jaw, chin and mouth looks more typical of Nordics (Sweden, Finland) than German males. People from these areas normally learn German at school. Was he faking a German accent ? He went to great lenghts to hide his identity.
I searched some Nordic databases for missing people and was not lucky.
One important thing is how he got to Derry. Derry only has local flights I believe. Did he flew from London? Or as he did not want to be traced did he take a train or bus?

Rbbm.
Funny you should say that, because i was going to suggest the same thing after watching a commercial for IKEA of all things.
imo.

Everything points to a careful planned suicide. He did not drown and he had no wounds. He may have used poison or overdosed on a drug. However the cause of death was not determined. Nothing came up on the toxicology from the autopsy. Seems this man was smart enough to take something that was undetected in the autopsy. He may have been a doctor or a chemist with knowledge about what to take and how to get it.

About the fake Vienna address: He may have traveled there or just use Google maps (has been around since 2006 I believe) to get the address. He didn´t need to be a native.

Sad but very interesting! I will follow .....
No idea whether he was indeed a German. He looks (CCTV) like many men of this age here in Germany.
I would like to know if he spoke the English language very well despite accent.
Because I'm on WS too much time I think his posts might have been confessions in some form and the content of his purple bag (13 x half filled) might have been "trophies" for dumping secretly.

Hi ya,

I would need your help in one of the more mysterious cases I came across here in Europe. There is a whole movie about his death (in English). Its short (15 minutes) and a great documentary:

More info about the case:
http://www.irishcentral.com/news/the-man-who-went-to-ireland-to-disappear-video

In short:
* an unidentified male commited suicide on the shore of Sligo, Ireland
* he is not a local, he came as a tourist three days before with a bus
* when singing in into the hotel, he used the name Peter Bergmann with a nonexisting adress in Vienna. Hotel staff said he had an eastern european accent

So far, so good. Now the weird facts of his last days:

* on CCTV can be seen that the last three days he left the hotel with a purple plastic bag and he came back each day without it. Theory of police is that he was busy throwing away his belongings. While walking around the city he seemed to be have been careful to avoid cameras.

* two days befor his death he bought 8 stamps. On his final way to the beach he can be seen in a cafe. He writes something on a paper and destroys it afterwards in little pieces

* he cut out all the name tags of brands of his clothes before his death

* he had forms of cancer in a latter stadium, but took no medicine and had no therapy (autopsy result), he had multiple heart attacks before

Who is he? And why go to such length to avoid identification if you commit suicide because of an illness? Why Ireland? So many questions...

People who spoke with him described him as having a thick/ heavy/ deep German accent, and he at least knew enough about Vienna to give an address that was a vacant lot.

There's no vacant lot, this must have been an error in translation along the way. The german forum linked on page 1 said the address he gave is "Ainstettersn 15, 4472 Wien" which is not a real address, it just sounds vaguely Austrian.

- Ainstettersn does not exist in Vienna, Austria or anywhere else (in fact, all search results link to this case)
- 4472 is not an existing Austrian postcode. If it was, the town would be located somewhere in Upper Austria, 200 to 300 km from Vienna. All Viennese Postcodes start with 1

People discussing the case in german language forums are thinking of a connection to "Amstetten", which is an actual town (not street) with a completely different postcode (3300).

End of facts. Begin free association:

I tried to imagine what similar spellings could be derived from "Ainstettersn".

1.)
"Ainstetten" gives results for a "Petrus von Ainstetten", a priest in Styria (Austrian sub state) who translated catholic scripture from latin/italian to german/austrian in the 15th century. Listed is the "Puch von menschlicher Aigenschafft" (Roughly: A book of human attributes) as translation for "De miseria humanae conditionis" by Pope Innozenz III. Not much more is known about this historic person. (All the search results link back to a Hungarian specialist in german studies who has written a book about him)

What if the deceased was a catholic priest/monk hiding the shame of suicide from his colleagues? VERY far fetched, I know. But here is Peter / Petrus, and Bergmann could be literally "man from the mountains", and there are lot of mountains in Styria.

Noteworthy: While "von Ainstetten" seems to be a place name (from Ainstetten), I could not find a place/village/county of this name, not even historic.

2.)
Ainstetter leads to a an author of unrelated books and some similar sleuthing about this very case on other websites. Removing the authors first name from the search, you get a bunch of butched scans of historic writing and a funny article about hunting Auerhühner in Tyrol, which is very probably not related in any way, but still a funny read.

Then, I tried a different angle looking for missing persons in Austria, but there is no official list, and the websites listing missing persons don't go back to 2009 (or earlier).

I noticed something while watching those images of him. His hair appeared to be blonde at one time. My hubby's hair is exactly like that. A certain way the light hits his hair, you can still see that he was very blonde.
