Casey Anthony Gets Time Served for Check Fraud
Fla. mom, accused of killing 2-year-old daughter, gets time served for check fraud
ORLANDO, Fla. January 25, 2010
<snipped>
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in Caylee's slaying.

Anthony's murder trial was scheduled to begin this summer but prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick said Monday that seemed unlikely.

The judge also ruled that Anthony's attorneys can interview the ex-wife of the meter reader who found Caylee's body. Casey Anthony's attorneys said Roy Kronk's ex-wife could offer testimony that supports the contention that Kronk should be a suspect.

Casey Anthony faced 13 counts of check fraud. Circuit Judge Stan Strickland found her guilty on six counts and withheld judgment on seven counts. He then sentenced her to time served, as well as probation if she is ever released.

Prosecutors had asked for five years in prison for the check fraud charges.

Baez: No Plea Deal In Casey's Murder Case

A member of Casey Anthony's defense team says there will be no plea deal in her murder case.

Eyewitness News was in court Monday when Casey Anthony pleaded guilty to check fraud. Monday night on CNN, Jose Baez said that does not mean Casey would be pleading guilty to murder.

Baez said Casey is not guilty and the case would be going to trial. A trial date has not been set.

Anchor Jim Payne asked, “Is her defense team trying to have it both ways when it comes to Roy Kronk?”

The defense maintains that law enforcement focused on Anthony too quickly and didn’t explore others extensively. The defense also wants to introduce testimony from a Kronk ex-wife who points to Kronk as a suspect in the toddler’s death.

Defense Says Play Proves Media's Impact On Case

"It tells me that the media process needs to take a different look at itself. It's one thing to cover a trial and to cover a case. It's another thing to create one," Andrea Lyon said.

In other news in the case, Anthony's defense wants to introduce testimony from Kronk's ex-wife in which she claims Kronk should be considered a suspect in Caylee's death.

Outside the courtroom Monday, Anthony's attorney, Jose Baez, said they are trying to show investigators looked at Anthony immediately and should have investigated others more thoroughly.

"We believe he should have been looked into. Should have had his phone records searched like everyone else," Baez said.

Baez said the defense is not trying to make any disparaging remarks about Kronk -- who denies any wrongdoing.

No, Really… What Just Happened?

Casey now has a record of six, yes six, felony convictions, which follow her to the murder trial. And, as we had previously discussed, if she does take the witness stand, the prosecutors will indeed relish soliciting Casey’s admission to those six felony convictions. Her defense team, as one of her lawyers stated after Casey’s Monday sentencing, would, during jury selection, seek a jury that is more intelligent than to be swayed by a few convictions for writing a few bad checks. The defense game plan, we are to believe, would be the “it was really no big deal” deflection manuever.

Perish the thought, folks. Seasoned criminal defense lawyers know that once a jury learns that your client has a prior felony criminal conviction, not to mention six of them, it’s pretty much game over. Juries tend to view a defendant/convicted felon on the witness stand as a liar. Can Casey overcome that hurdle if she testifies in her own defense? Not very likely.

A jury will not believe a thing she says beyond her name and date of birth.

So, for all of advocates for justice, yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. And, he has given us the Casey Anthony Defense team. Stay tuned. It’s bound to get more interesting.

Casey Anthony's attorneys want meter reader Roy Kronk investigated
10:41 p.m. EST, January 27, 2010
<snipped>
Prosecutors have no doubt about the identity of 2-year-old Caylee Marie Anthony's killer. Her 23-year-old mother, Casey Anthony, did it, and she's the only suspect they ever had, they say.

But now Anthony's attorneys are stepping up efforts to put someone else under a microscope — the man who found the toddler's remains.

The idea that Kronk should be a suspect — an idea first raised by Anthony's defense team in November — is one experts that say is designed to raise doubts among jurors during Anthony's murder trial.

This week, her lead attorney, Jose Baez, said on national television that she won't admit to guilt in the murder trial, as she did Monday in an unrelated check-fraud case.

Orange County Circuit Court Judge Stan Strickland is allowing her team to question Jill Kerley, one of Kronk's former wives, under oath.

"It's one thing to spew venom to a private investigator, but a different scenario when you're under oath and being cross-examined," Evans said.

Casey Anthony the felon debuts on state's Web site
4:49 p.m. EST, January 29, 2010
<snipped>
Casey Anthony's name turned up on the site — http://www.dc.state.fl.us —after she pleaded guilty in a felony check-fraud case.

As a result, Anthony, 23, is now a felon — even though she isn't serving her sentence in one of Florida's prisons.

Normally, the site also provides photos of those people. But, in Anthony's case, the photo is missing, as well as certain details about her physical characteristics, like hair and eye color.

A probation officer will soon visit her at the jail to explain the conditions of her probation and what to do if she is released from jail, said Gretl Plessinger, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections. The probation officer may take a photo of her during the visit for the Web site, Plessinger said. Afterward, the probation officer will check on Anthony's status at the jail regularly.

"She's in jail, so we know where she is," Plessinger said. "She is not out in the community like our other offenders."

Anthony cannot have any contact with Huizenga under the terms of her probation.

The state's Web site also offers another detail about Anthony's check-fraud punishment: Her probation is scheduled to end Jan. 24, 2011.

There was a deadline today, however, for the defense to provide information that would support defense attorney Todd Macaluso’s claim that Anthony is innocent.

As of late this afternoon, it was unclear whether the defense had filed that information.

UPDATED: Monday brings no new details in Casey Anthony case
2:41 p.m. EST, February 2, 2010

Prosecutors did not receive any paperwork from Casey Anthony's defense team that backed up one of her attorney's comments in court that someone else left the body of Anthony's daughter in the wood, according to the State Attorney's Office.

According to the defense, the Feb. 1 deadline dealt provided names of witnesses connected to the crime scene. However, the defense says the issue has not been addressed in court yet.

The attorneys involved are working out schedule for the release of discovery. No trial date has been set yet.

Casey Anthony’s Defense Team Misses Deadline
Posted: 5:52 pm EST February 2, 2010
Updated: 6:00 pm EST February 2, 2010
<snipped>
Casey Anthony's defense team missed Monday’s deadline to provide its witness list to prosecutors for the murder case.

The judge had set a February 1 deadline for the defense to provide information or witnesses to back up its claim that it has proof someone else, other than Casey, put Caylee's body in the woods near her home last year.

The defense recently blamed prosecutors for the delay, claiming it still needs more information from the FBI.

Readers focused on the Feb. 1 date, but the prosecution and the defense are working out a schedule for discovery. When we know more information, we’ll share it. We have to wait for events to play out.

We realize many people have an intense fascination in the Anthony case, and we try to share the latest to meet that demand.

But we in the media are like the public: We have to wait for events to unfold.

Updated: 2:10 pm EST February 4, 2010

In the case against Casey Anthony Wednesday, prosecutors revealed they want to meet with Judge Stan Strickland privately to get his permission to hold back information from the defense.

Repeatedly, the defense has asked for more information from federal investigators before moving their case forward, but it's unclear whether that's the evidence at issue.

Prosecutors also argued that, if the defense questions every material witness under oath, Casey's trial won't start before May of 2011.

A major development in the case against Casey Anthony Wednesday as Judge Stan Strickland set a trial date for the first degree murder charges.

It is now set for May 2nd, 2011. That’s about a year after the trial was first supposed to start. There’s no word yet where it will take place.

Prosecutors also filed a new motion asking the judge for a private closed-door meeting without the defense attorneys. Prosecutors say they have new material and information from investigators regarding the case that they don’t want to go be disclosed to the public.
