MI - Dr. Teleka Patrick, 30, Kalamazoo Media & Map Links - no discussion please

December 23, 2013 4:59 PM

The FBI said the 30-year-old doctor was last seen Dec. 5 at a Radisson hotel in Kalamazoo, Mich., wearing a black coat with the hood pulled up tightly.

Dr. Patrick tried to rent a room, but did not have enough cash, having accidentally left her purse at a nearby medical center where she is a first-year medical resident.

“What I do know is there was a level of agitation she was experiencing and if I knew specifically what was causing the stress, I might be able to better understand how she was thinking and how that thinking got her into the car moving westerly,” Clatterbuck said. “That is the mystery that we are trying to unravel.

“Why was she agitated?, Why did she head west? Why did she do any of these things? … That’s the core of what this is about.”

“It’s really difficult for a person to survive in our culture without money and ID and without credit cards and cash and now we know she doesn’t have a vehicle,” Clatterbuck said. “All of these factors elevate my level of concern for her physical safety.”

FOX 17 News has uncovered newly-discovered online videos of a doctor who went missing in Kalamazoo.

SNIP

While investigating the story, FOX 17′s Ann Marie LaFlamme discovered a series of online videos Thursday morning which were purportedly uploaded prior to Patrick’s disappearance.

In one of the self-shot videos, the doctor begins on-camera saying,”Hi love. It’s me. So I finally got done. Um so I just wanted to show you what I made. So I’ll start with, um, if you were here this is what would be your plate.” The video called “Surprise! Final Video” appeared to be uploaded November 10, 2013.

“She’s one fine girl I’ll love for the rest of my life,” Irene Patrick said Friday from her home in Kissimmee, Fla. She hired a private investigator to assist in the case, which is being handled by the Indiana State Police, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.

“The family is currently heavily involved in looking for evidence,” Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller said. “We’re ...seeking out information and taking it in different directions. There isn’t enough information to speculate.”

"There has to be some triggering event to make a person in their 30s leave their phone anywhere," said Carl Clatterbuck, the Kalamazoo private investigator. "Phones for anyone between the ages of 14 and 35 are a large part of their life, to leave it means that you're leaving all of your friends, relatives, all of your connection to the world. That suggested to me that she wanted to be away from something, and to not be tracked."

Clatterbuck said Patrick received a phone call the day before she disappeared that may have agitated her, but he was told that there was "nothing remarkable" to be seen in her phone records. Clatterbuck confirmed that she had an "on-again, off-again" boyfriend, but he is not a suspect and the two were on good terms. Patrick's ex-husband, Clatterbuck said, also is not a suspect because they haven't had any contact in two years.

10:02 p.m., Dec. 5 - Indiana State Police receive a report of a car on westbound I-94 at mile marker 23 near Portage, Ind., matching the description of Patrick's gold 1997 Lexus ES300. Matyas said a caller who contacted state police in Indiana reported that Patrick’s car was being driven erratically.

10:20 p.m., Dec. 5 - Arriving on scene, a state police trooper finds Patrick’s car in a ditch on the north side of westbound I-94. Patrick, however, is not with the car. A search of truck stops, gas stations and other businesses in the immediate area by the trooper and emergency medical personnel turns up nothing.

The Lexus was found that same night, at about 10:20 p.m. CST, in a ditch off westbound I-94 near Portage, Ind., by an Indiana State Police trooper who responded just before 10:15 p.m. CST to a report of an unknown accident.

Patrick’s car was later found abandoned within about 10 miles of the location of the erratically driven car, police said.

Then later at 10:14 911 calls started coming to the Indiana State Police of an erratic driver going west on Interstate 94. Police believe the driver was Teleka Patrick and she was alone. "A good thing for us is the information we received from the Indiana state police is that a single person was seen in the vehicle when the reports were coming in of the erratic driving,” says Kalamazoo County Sheriff Rick Fuller. Ten minutes later her car was spotted parked, empty, 40 feet off the road at mile marker 23.

Two hours later, a 911 caller from a passer-by reported a car in a ditch on I-94 in Indiana. The 911 caller said the Lexus had been driving erratically.

(Kzoo Undersheriff) Matyas said Monday that investigators do not know why Patrick was trying to get a room at the Radisson.

http://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2013/12/teleka_patrick_tried_to_check.html

A police source close to the search says they know why but aren’t releasing the information because it might jeopardize their investigation.

Comment on 1st link from reporter Rex Hall who wrote that article says police know why Teleka couldn't get the room (not that they know why she was trying to get the room)

I asked Undersheriff Pali Matyas if police know why Teleka Patrick was not able to get a room at the Radisson. He told me today that police know the reason but are not disclosing that information right now. I also asked him about what Patrick did Dec. 5 while she was downtown, as well as who she was with. Again, he said police are not commenting on that or what information, if any, police have gleaned from cellphone records. I asked him if police are in possession of Patrick's cellphone and he said he didn't know and even if he didn't, that again would be information police would not disclose.

Videos raise more questions about missing Michigan doctor Teleka Patrick

The newly discovered videos add to the swirl of questions surrounding this case.

Investigators have said they have no evidence of foul play, but they also don't have conclusive evidence that Patrick's movements on December 5 were voluntary.

Police brought out dogs to track Patrick's scent. They led investigators the 30 or so feet out of the ditch where Patrick's car rested to the highway. There, the trace went cold.

"We have scoured, searched and looked at everything we could possibly look at -- all the exits, all the businesses, all the hotels," Strong said. "We posted fliers; we talked to neighbors (who live near the highway). We did a full-blown, on-the-ground search in the wooded area north of where the car was."

Please see info RE: issuing statements about specifics in the Teleka Patrick case & safety at Borgess: http://brgss.co/19WMDHb #FindTeleka

With all of the information surrounding the Teleka Patrick case out there, some questions have arisen about safety and security at Borgess. While we continue to work with law enforcement officials, this restricts us from issuing statements regarding any specifics of the case. However, we want you to know that safety is of utmost concern to us. For peace-of-mind, any associate/patient can contact security 24/7 on any phone throughout the Borgess Medical Center campus to request an escort. Our thoughts are with Teleka and we pray she is found safe and secure. For any additional inquiries about the case, please contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Dept.

Patrick's family and friends have no knowledge of her being in a relationship. They insist she was single at the time of her disappearance, private investigator Carl H. Clatterbuck III told the Daily News on Monday.

He also said there is no record of Patrick texting or emailing these YouTube videos to anyone.

The family has no idea who Patrick is talking to, he said.

"We don't have a clue right now," he said. "It's kind of frightening. It adds a new layer of mystery."

Clatterbuck said Patrick has not been diagnosed with any type of social disorder or mental health issues. But he can't rule out that perhaps Patrick concocted this supposed significant other and is delusional in the videos.

"As an armchair psychologist you have to ask that question," he said.

snip

But Clatterbuck doesn't believe at this point Patrick left to join her mystery love.

He has a theory that Patrick was attempting to hide from someone and get "off the grid."

On the night she was last seen she tried to check into a hotel only a few miles from her apartment, he said. The hotel was full so she took a shuttle back to her work and the driver said she darted through cars as if she was trying to lose someone who may be following her, he said.

"I'm making a jump (with the theory) but it's not much of a jump," he said. "It's clear she was worried about something."
He adds she left her phone at her office and has not used her credit cards. She even borrowed $100 to pay for the hotel room form a colleague, he said.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office has maintained all along that there is no evidence of foul play, but Monday night, we learned through our police sources that investigators have executed several search warrants in the case.

Where and when they were executed is still not clear
, but a private detective hired by the family says this development means several things for the investigation.

http://wwmt.com/news/features/featu...ion-disappearance-kalamazoo-doctor-4411.shtml

Our sources confirm several search warrants were executed, but where, when and what was searched is not being released for fear it could damage the investigation.

Carl Clatterbuck says all the evidence says Patrick is highly intelligent, educated, cautious and dependable.

Surviellance video and witnesses show Patrick was trying not to be noticed while attempting to check into Kalamazoo's Raddisson Hotel and was seen ducking between cars in the Borgess parking lot just before she went missing.

"What I'm concerned about is the desire to get off the grid, to be anonymous," said Clatterbuck. "The fact that she as credit cards, the fact that she could have access to money, but she asks a friend for a hundred dollars to get a room at a hotel..."

snip

"As time goes by there is some reason why she's not contacting someone," said Clatterbuck. "It makes me very nervous for her safety at this point."

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office still says it has yet to find any evidence that suggests foul play. Undersheriff Paul Matyas say his department will not release any more information unless it's something that could generate tips from the public.
