GUILTY MI - Jonathon Hoffman, 17, shot to death, West Bloomfield, 18 May 2012

Live stream video/audio kept going out due to intense local storms, but I stuck with it to the end. I'll post something "official" as soon as it's available.

Sentencing started late. Defense attorney wanted some minute changes to court documents. Judge will see that the corrections are made.

Prosecutor read a prepared statement from Jonathan's father. His mother spoke with paper in hand. Prosecutor spoke about why Ms. Layne deserves maximum sentence. Prosecutor also summarized a report from Layne's parole officer.

Defense attorney took some cheap shots at the victim and his parents. Sandra Layne rambled on mindlessly about why she did what she did, complaining about her daughter, former son-in-law, and her grandson.

Judge pronounced a sentence of 20-40 years in a state prison, with 2 years served concurrently for the firearms charge. Defendant must pay restitution. Must have mental health treatment and life skills training.

This is heart wrenching.. I don't know enough of the case to comment. I will have to look into it.

Seems like grandson was on drugs?? Troubled and his parents did not want him?

There is some history of drug use. Jonathan's parents are divorced and had moved to AZ for new jobs. Shortly after they moved, their daughter, Jonathan's younger sister, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Since much time would be devoted to her care, and because Jonathan wasn't thrilled about starting in a new school in another state, the family agreed that Jonathan would return to Michigan to finish high school with his friends in familiar surroundings and live with his grandmother whom he loved, and she was apparently fond of him.

Appeals court affirms murder conviction, sentence of Detroit-area woman who shot teen grandson

WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -
The Michigan appeals court has affirmed the murder conviction and sentence of suburban Detroit woman who killed her 17-year-old grandson.

Sandra Layne said her rights were violated when the trial judge barred her from introducing certain comments made by Jonathan Hoffman. Layne claims the words were threatening and would have helped her claim of self-defense.

But the appeals court rejected that argument in an opinion released Wednesday...
