GUILTY NJ - Martin Caballero, 47, Atlantic City, 21 May 2010

Police seek ATM user in N.J. disappearance

By Darran Simon

Inquirer Staff Writer
Police have released a photo of an unidentified man who used a North Jersey tourist's ATM card hours after the card owner disappeared from an Atlantic City casino.

Authorities said the ATM customer's identity could help them solve the disappearance of Martin Caballero of North Bergen. Caballero, who arrived with his family at the Trump Taj Mahal around 10:30 p.m. Friday, was last seen when he dropped off his wife and went to park their Lincoln MKS sedan.

The man in the photo withdrew about $300 from Caballero's account at a Bank of America in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County, about 1 a.m. Saturday, said authorities and Caballero's family.

Does it look like that is Mr. Caballero's car the perp is driving at the ATM? Also, does it look like the perp is wearing a baseball cap? It kind of does to me but hard to tell.

Also the photo of the car belonging to Mr. Caballero doesn't appear to have any exterior fire damage.

I wonder where he is. I hope the perp didn't kill him for few hundred dollars.

It would also be interesting to know where Mr. Caballerro was when the perp was able to withdraw the money. Clearly he needed a pin number to use the card.

I hope not, but wonder if he murdered Mr. Caballerro after getting the pin number from him. Perhaps he had to burn the inside of the car with the attempt to rid any evidence of a murder.

Still praying Mr Caballerro is alive and found, even if hurt, at least he would still be alive.

I am sure the police are all over this and have had many leads concerning who the man at the atm is.....
but I was thinking, the car was stolen from a casino parking garage.
What if the thief who abducted Mr Caballero wanted money to gamble?
So, he hijacks Mr Caballero, gets the atm pin number from him, $300.00,
ditches Mr Caballero somewhere. I only hope he is not injured.
Then goes back to the casino.
If so, I hope police go over the security tapes from all night long.

Just a thought.

Prayers for the Caballero family.

This is not going to end well. And all for 300 bucks, sad.

I doubt this guy went back to casinos unless to look for another easy mark....he was probably there in the first place looking for people on their way in, who might still have a pocket full of money and maybe Martin did not have enough to satisfy him.

It is a very clear photo for an ATM camera, am hoping they will be able to identify this guy very quickly.

This. Plus, Mr. C was taken at 10:30 the car was found torched at 2:30 AM correct? I highly doubt this guy would/could hijack, get PIN, get cash, do away with Mr. C, clean up and get back to the casino in that amount of time.

My question is, how did he get to the casino? On foot? Drop-off? Cab? I don't see how he would drive there, park and leave his car... perhaps he lives close by? Granted, I know absolutely nothing about this area.

I wonder how he got away from the scene (where the car was found torched)?
Furthermore, he must have had some sort of flammable liquid to burn the car with... where did that come from? Unless he siphoned gas or something.

So many strange factors in this one.

Im hoping LE knows who this creep is already and they are just looking for him. $300.00 dollars won't get him far so im sure he will make contact with someone soon. He'll make a mistake and he'll get caught. JMO

There must have been an accomplice to drop him off at the casino, follow him after Martin was carjacked, do the disgustingly dirty deed we assume occurred and then pick him up after he was seen running off into the woods.

This whole thing is frightening....poor Martin.

I still can't believe this guy didn't even attempt to cover his face at the ATM either...pretty bold.

I'm also wondering how much cash Martin was carrying that night.

I agree. Seeing a nice Lincoln SUV at a casino probably gave the person who abducted Martin the thought of huge bucks! I do believe whomever carjacked him was upset at only $300 and I can only hope and pray that he put him somewhere will he will be located soon enough. Good bet the same person torched the SUV. I hope the police are checking video tapes of surrounding places of that bank...because it may be possible the perp had friends in another vehicle following him and if that is the case..there could be a good tracing point to whomever else was involved. I cannot believe as clear as that photo that someone has not stepped forward, as yet to ID him.

Wait, maybe that's why he could only get $303... maybe Mr. C had already made a large withdrawal (it was his daughter's 21st at a Casino, that wouldn't be surprising) and $303 was all the bank would allow the perp to withdraw... don't most accounts have a max daily ATM withdrawal limit?

That could very well be the case...I know my limit ATM is $300....man I sure feel sorry for the daughter...what started out as such a fun birthday celebration turns out so horrible....poor thing...

She'll likely never have a happy birthday again.
That's one of the reasons why this case has me right now, Mr. C was just trying to give his daughter an awesome 21st. :(

What I find odd is that while this has all the hallmarks of a classic carjacking, there are a few aspects that just make no sense. I thought casinos had cameras all over the place and it is strange that there is no footage of any carjacking itself or the vehicle departing. I'm not sure about this casino, but many of them require the person parking to get a ticket and get it validated inside in order to get free parking. There does not seem to be any way that Martin or the other dude could have gotten that ticket validated (if they use that system) so then there would have to have been an interaction with a parking lot fee collector upon exit. Again, nothing about that in the news reports.

Also, while I assume casino traffic is down with the lousy economy, a carjacking at 10:30 on a Friday night should have been seen by others in the parking lot. I'm not aware of any news reports that say there were any witnesses.

Then there is the question of Martin's whereabouts. Personally (and while I'm no criminal) it would have made more sense to have thrown a dead Martin in the trunk before incinerating the vehicle. Here the car was torched and no body.

Strange.

Pretty bold or just dumb. lol

Thats true I wonder how much cash he had on him but then again if he had alot of money on him the dumb ars wouldn't need to go to the ATM.

Im going to check the local news now. brb

Also, add to that (I'm from the area) that AC is about an hour, hour and half depending on how quickly he was traveling from Blackwood where his car was found. The whole thing just doesn't make sense...like webrocket said, there's NO way he got that car out of a parking garage without SOMEONE (mainly the attendee's that want the $$) noticing it or it being caught on camera.

There's no way they don't have this guy or this altercation even on camera, and if the cameras that are there are not working or installed properly then me thinks the Donald is going to have some splainin to do to the cops.

ETA: Also, if the car was found in Blackwood that also leads me to think that the perp must be from the area closer to Philly (where Blackwood is, Blackwood is closer to the Philly side of Jersey than the Atlantic City/shore side, if that makes any sense!) because why wouldn't he just ditch the car once he got the money in AC? AC is riddled with crime, it makes no sense that they would drive the car up to be found if they were from the AC area. Altho I've seen stranger things happen...just throwing it out there!

You are prob right. This guy is prob closer to Philly.

I wonder if they are checking the toll booth cameras. Getting on you have to get a ticket and when getting off you have to pay.
