NY - Shannan Gilbert, 24, Oak Beach, 1 May 2010

Jersey City prostitute still missing after 13 months of searching

The last time anyone saw or heard Shannan Gilbert, she was fleeing for her life along the shadowy roads of Oak Beach, a small gated beachfront community on Long Island.

She pounded on doors, residents say, and shouted for help. In a 23-minute call to 911 she told the operator: "They’re trying to kill me," according to her sister, who says she has been briefed on the call.

Then, sometime just before dawn on May 1, 2010, the Jersey City prostitute, then 23, with a shy smile, large, dark eyes and tumultuous background, was gone.

Police have searched for her off and on the past 13 months, combing the area as recently as Tuesday. They may not have found Gilbert, who was driven to Oak Beach to keep a date for sex the night she vanished, but they have made other grisly discoveries.

LONG ISLAND SERIAL KILLER

It's been over a year since missing person Shannan Gilbert disappeared from an Oak Beach gated community, but "48 Hour Mystery" revealed new details about her case. Viewers learned, during the TV special, about the specific events that occurred prior to Gilbert's disappearance and the conflicting stories of those involved. The program dedicated to the Long Island Serial Killer spoke with Gilbert's driver, client, and a doctor that was included in her case.

Much of the television program was dedicated to exposing the lack of concern police and authorities gave to the missing escort. Friends and family members of Gilbert believed that her profession influenced the search, and that a more timely investigation would have been conducted if it weren't for her prior career choices. Investigators on the case went as far as saying that Gilbert's was a normal missing person case.

Source: Pocketbook found at Gilgo may be Shannan Gilbert's

Searchers combing an area near Oak Beach found a pocketbook believed to belong to Shannan Gilbert, the New Jersey woman who was last seen in the area in May 2010, a law enforcement source said Tuesday.

The pocketbook was found during a search of a marshy area that had been underwater and inaccessible when it was previously searched, the source said.

Tuesday's hunt took place not far from where the remains of 10 people have been found in the past year. Suffolk police believe one person killed them

Other items were found during the search, which occurred north and east of a gated community in Oak Beach, west of the Robert Moses Causeway and south of Ocean Parkway, the source said.

Shannan Gilbert's Skeletal Remains Believed Found

The body was found about a quarter of a mile from where Gilbert's purse, identification and shoes were located last week.

"[The homicide squad] were on an amphibious machine edging forward into thick brush when the homicide squad detective spotted the skeletal remains lying on the surface of the ground," Dormer said.

Dormer called the area where the body was found a "very tough, desolate, tangled mess." He said that Gilbert could have likely been able to see the lights on a nearby parkway and attempted to go in that direction, but that she did not get very far in the marshy, tough ramble.

So, with a serial killer in the area...they're saying she just happened to try to walk through this very rough land and got stuck?

"Our theory is that this is a coincidence. She went missing in Oak Beach and this has nothing to do with the serial killer," Dormer has said.

Right? :waitasec:

But, she was running from someone that night. I find it hard to believe that it was complete coincidence. Strange!

The authorities have maintained, though, that Ms. Gilbert’s case is not necessarily related to the others. The location of the body believed to be hers, Mr. Dormer said Tuesday, has helped validate his belief that Ms. Gilbert drowned while trying to reach the parkway through the swampland nearby after knocking on a door in Oak Beach. The body was found, Mr. Dormer said, about a quarter mile northeast of where investigators last week retrieved what they believed were Ms. Gilbert’s purse, jeans, shoes and cellphone.

“She traveled at least half a mile, three quarters of a mile, on foot through that muck,” Mr. Dormer said at a news conference on Tuesday. “It would be very easy to get exhausted and fall down and not be able to move any further.”

[snip]

Over the past year, Ms. Gilbert seemed to find solace in the notion that her daughter’s disappearance had shined a light on other victims.

“Everyone has their destiny,” she said last spring. “Maybe this was hers.”

Ok, so Mr. Detectives please explain why she would leave her important stuff like purse and phone and try to get help without her pants and shoes? Sorry but this does not make any sense to me. Maybe she was being chased by this (running from) unknown killer after he had his way with her? JMO

So sad to hear about Shannan but I hope this gives her family and friends some answers. I am absolutely shocked at how close she was to the road. I am also a little angry that this particular area was not searched before.

Rest in peace beautiful Shannan. It is because of you that so many victims have been found. :rose:

I can't believe LE, with a straight face, tells 48 hour mystery that Shannan's death was an "accident." I'd like to know what kind of "accident" makes you take your clothes off before you die and leave them 1/4 mile back from where you die after calling the police stating people were after you trying to kill you. That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while. If it was an "accident," it occurred when she was running from an attacker; making it still a homicide.

it could have been methamphetamine induced psychosis. People often strip off their clothes too due to high body temperatures. Maybe she went into the water to cool down and got stuck and drowned?

Psychosis also could explain why she told 911 people were chasing her and why she didn't stay at the neighbor's house to wait on police.

There was a case a couple of years ago where a woman was found in the desert deceased somewhere...she had very high levels of meth in her system and was found naked laying in a dug out hole (presumably to cool off?)

Can anyone remember her name? It's driving me crazy.

While I think the accidental drowning scenario is technically possible, it seems like quite a coincidence: a woman who advertised her services on the web is afraid someone is going to kill her and runs away, and later shows up dead. In searching for her, they find TEN OTHER bodies, eight of whom were women who advertised their services on the web and were, in fact, killed and disposed of *right there.*

It also seemed like an amazing coincidence that two (or more) separate serial killers were dumping bodies along the same stretch of beach. Now they think not a coincidence, but one killer.

I think Shannan's death having no connection to the other ten deaths is actually a less likely scenario -- even if in general, murder is less likely than an accident, if that makes any sense.

I think it is ridiculous for them to expect us to believe Sharon's body has been there all this time and her belongings behind CPH's house all this time. I think they were placed there a few days before the new search. All these other scenarios that would explain an accidental death and her being out there all this time are crazy. one in a million freak accident to go with all these other one in a million co-incidents. It makes me sick that these evil people are so powerful and arrogant they don't even try to bother with a plausible explanation. Unless the SK is caught in the act someday or another girl gets away we will probably never know the truth about any of this.

Paranoid psychosis is a break with reality that includes extreme fear and anxiety associated with delusions. Paranoia is a common feature of many delusions, especially in cases like persecutory delusions where people become convinced that they are under attack or someone is out to get them. A number of psychiatric conditions can contribute to the development of paranoid psychosis, and it can also develop in response to neurological disorders, certain medications, and street drugs.http://www.psychosissucks.ca/epi/substanceuseandpsych.cfm
