Deceased/Not Found SD - Catherine Tornquist, 56, Hot Springs, 5 Oct 2011 *M. Tornquist guilty*

We live about 50 miles north of where she lives; the Black Hills are a beautiful place but driving can be dangerous with some of the drops/curves. I learned from the KOTA site that she was carrying cash to buy the RV and that 3 people knew that, according to her friend. I do hope she is OK. I haven't heard anything about searches in the area for her. :(

The thing is - her car was still at home. So did she disappear from home? Or did she ride with her son...? :waitasec:

There are some time gaps that I'm worried about.

- Lytle said he last saw her on the evening of Oct 4 when they parted ways
- LE says she was last seen at her home the morning of Oct 5
---> so WHO saw her on Oct 5?

- she was supposed to go pick up the RV/camper with her son on Oct 5
- the son spoke with Lytle sometime after Oct 5, and then Lytle called LE
---> evidently she did not go pick up the RV/camper with her son, so were his suspicions aroused sooner? Did he contact LE or anyone else on Oct 5 when she failed to pick him up?

.

Since Lytle went over on Oct 6 to try and see the new camper, the son evidently didn't call until at least a day after his mother didn't pick him up.

Catherine's son, M, was waiting for his mother to pick him up so they could both go to get her motor home, but when she never showed up. Matthew called Don and Don reported Catherine missing.

Lytle said he tried calling Catherine numerous times on Wednesday, to see how it was going with the camper, but she did not answer.

On Thursday, he said he decided to go to her home in Hot Brook Canyon to see the new camper.

He said he reported her missing at 2:45 a.m. on Oct. 7 after her son called and said he didn't know where she was.

bumping for Catherine...

I've been searching a couple of times a day for news and can't find any. The only thing that I can find is that her daughter's fiancé puts her missing poster up every single day, begging people to share it and be on the lookout. He seems very concerned and is trying desperately to get the word out. I believe her niece did also - I think it was on KOTO news? I also see the friend, Lytle, commenting on various articles, clarifying errors, and also begging people to help.

I just can't believe there's not more publicity. It makes me wonder if LE isn't focusing on someone specific. (I have my own suspicions and it's not Lytle - but for now I'll sit on it unless I see something mentioned in MSM)

This is the latest update, but LE still isn't saying anything. At the link below, there is a video that shows what I assume is her front door, with LE tape on it - as if it's taped shut - and says 'evidence'. It seems that maybe they've sealed off her home?

(ETA: It also says she was last seen Oct 4, whereas previous articles said Oct 5. I wonder if someone's story has changed.)

Hot Springs Woman Still Missing After One Month

...."It's just been so quiet about the whole thing, and I understand part of it, but I think they should let us know something," Smith said.

In fact, the Fall River Sheriff's department wouldn't comment on whether or not they believe foul play was involved.

"That's something that the investigation will farrow out in the end," Mraz said.

I haven't forgotten about Catherine. It seems that we don't have many details to work with...altho that is good if LE is working the case hard and keeping things close to the vest.

Come home, Catherine!

Do we know where the son lives? She was suppose to go and pick him up. Do they live in the same town? Would be nice if we could find out if her purse/cell/keys and cash were in the house or car.

The son said that she was supposed to pick him up. That seems like an odd way of going to pick up an RV, though -- because (if it's one you drive rather than pull behind) she would end up with two vehicles that needed to be driven home. Makes more sense to me that he would have come to her house so that when they returned, he could just drive home. Kwim?

They've got that police tape over the front door (in the video I posted above), so I'm assuming everything was in her home. But I'm just guessing - it hasn't been stated anywhere.

I really have my suspicions here.

:silenced:

Like many small towns, Hot Springs is a place where most everybody knows each other. That's why so many people are concerned about the disappearance of one of their neighbors, 56-year-old Catherine Tornquist.

"All the people spoken to about Catherine say this is not in her character just to up and leave and disappear. It's highly irregular," Fall River County Sheriff Rich Mraz said.

That does seem like an odd way to go get another vehicle, unless her son didn't have a car. Sounds like she was paying the remaining balance on the RV with cash and as the Lyte says in the comments section...only three people knew she had that cash on her. I'm assuming he is saying that the three are herself, her son and Lyte. Maybe her son told others and he had a friend with him. How old is her son? Does he live in the same town?

There is something that is bothering me about Lytle though. Of course the obvious, he was with her all day, could have been the last one to see her, knows about the cash....but in this article it states that he waved good bye to her. In statement analysis that would be a flag as it is a normal action and a detail you wouldn't think of mentioning because everyone does it. It isn't a direct quote but it did catch my eye when reading the article.

Lytle said he last saw her, and waved good-bye to her, at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night in the Sonny's Super Foods parking lot, after the two returned to town together from their day spent sight-seeing and checking out some of the areas second-hand stores.

There's a comment by DL under the original story linked here at the beginning of this thread:

http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7282874&postcount=1

Also, from the story at the link:

"Catherine is a very kind and caring person," Lytle said, while adding that he was looking forward to celebrating her 56th birthday with her on Oct. 12 - exactly one week after the day she was last seen.

"She's a very spiritual person who wouldn't even swat a fly. She would often capture bugs in her home and then go outside and release them," added Lytle.

As example of her connection to and love for other living creatures, Tornquist was the feature of a February 2005 Hot Springs Star news article about how a local vet and dentist worked together with Tornquist to help her pet rabbit Princess with some unusual health issues.

Here's THAT article:

A little long in the tooth
Posted: February 15, 2005

Realizing just how much Catherine loved animals, I can't imagine her without any.

Someone said, hopefully a bunny lover is caring for Princess - and that got me thinking... This article being from 2005, I have read that rabbits can live anywhere from 8 - 12 years - averaging approx 10 years.

Just thinking about how far she went to get Princess the medical attention she needed to live a better life, I imagine Catherine has/had a pet or 3 in her life currently - intentionally leaving any critters behind would certainly have an impact on them. I just can't imagine her having left on her own without them.

:waitasec:

Also, I hadn't realized Catherine's birthday was 1 week after the day she was last seen.

:maddening:

ETA: I see there are also comments under this story - sounds like DL is one who feels there is no way Catherine is missing purposefully! (THO based on the Oct 31st comments, I'm now also questioning the day she was last seen!??!)

Where are you Catherine?

I'm a native of SD. I don't believe this was posted, but here is the SD Department of Criminal Investigation's poster. I wish they would've included more info on that. I'll contact CharleyProject, and see if they can add this case.

Also, wanted to add this news article from KELO from November 4, 2011:

I saw the comments from the sister on the Rapid City Journal story... Hmm, the comments seem real, and not a hoax, but it's hard to say. Did she run off to seek a new life?

Please come home, Catherine. You are missed!

I just saw this article that was posted yesterday, I think. They interview the daughter, and she says that her mother was supposed to go with Lytle to get the RV, not with the brother. However, I keep seeing it reported that it was the brother she was supposed to go with...

The sister also says she told the brother she was leaving that morning, so I guess that's where the "last seen" early in the morning on Oct 5 originally came from. It was bugging me b/c they never gave the circumstances. However, it seems that LE has gone back to the evening of Oct 4 as "last seen". Hmmm.

Daughter of missing woman frustrated by lack of information

Post also said that she was aware her mother was planning to go to Rapid City but contends that Lytle was the one who was supposed to go to Rapid City with her, not her brother Matthew.

"Matthew was in the house," Post said. "She woke him up early that morning and said ‘I'm leaving,' and then Matthew went back to sleep." Post said that the reason her brother didn't report his mother missing was because he thought she was with Lytle.

ETA: This conflicts with what the daughter is saying about the brother being at Catherine's house that morning. Is it bad reporting, or is something amiss with these "stories"? (bbm):

Catherine's son, M was waiting for his mother to pick him up so they could both go to get her motor home, but when she never showed up. Matthew called Don and Don reported Catherine missing.

My link, in a previous post, to the SD DCI isn't working. Was Catherine found? I'll contact them, and see what I can find out.
