Maleah Davis: More charges on the way in connection with little girl’s death, police say
Texas authorities said more charges are expected in connection with the death of 4-year-old Houston girl, Maleah Thomas, but they’re urging the public to be patient as the investigation continues.

“You look at social media. They want people arrested; they don’t understand that that’s not the way investigations go,” Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said. “Justice sometimes is a marathon but we’re well into this marathon. We should have an update within the next few weeks.”

[...]

“The M.E. has ruled that the [cause of death] was homicidal violence, but the report is not done,” Acevedo said during a Friday press conference, according to Patch. “In terms of the final M.E.’s report, we’re still waiting for that.”

Houston sculptor creates memorial for Maleah Davis, slain 4-year-old

A Houston sculptor is creating a memorial for 4-year-old Maleah Davis who was missing for nearly a month before being found dead in late May.

The story gained national attention, but especially impacted Houston residents, including sculptor Shirley Scarpetta.

“It’s our duty as parents to help protect our children, and the way she died was just so horrific," Scarpetta told local ABC affiliate KTRK. "Somebody needed to stand up for her.”

[...]

“In order for her to never be forgotten, for her to be a memorial for others to remind them, let’s take care of our future, our babies,” Scarpetta said.

“It’s just something that touched my soul,” she told CNN on Saturday. “…It was something I couldn’t get it out of my mind.”

[...]

Scarpetta told CNN that as a mother, the tragedy tugged at her heart and made her want to sculpt the little girl. She said she got the opportunity on Thursday when a private donor commissioned the piece. She said she went to work and completed the base of the sculpture in just one day.

Scarpetta said, for her, Maleah represented all of the children who have been taken from the world too soon. The sculpture, she said, is for them.

[...]

Although Scarpetta finished sculpting the statue, it still needs to be cast in bronze. Scarpetta said it will take about a month to complete. She said someone is building a granite base for it and hopes there will be a public place to display it in Houston.

Fulton overpass could be renamed to honor Maleah Davis
5d1bd9406256a.image.jpg

An overpass in Southwest Arkansas could soon be named after Maleah Davis.

[...]

Officials in Hempstead County initially wanted to name a section of interstate in her honor, but transportation officials say its reserved for law enforcement.

They're now working to rename the Red Lake Road overpass after her.

Currently, there's a memorial sign in Fulton which reads "Rest in Peace Sweet Angel Always in Our Hearts".

[...]

If approved, a "Maleah Davis Memorial Bridge" sign will be placed on each end of the overpass.

The Hempstead County Quorum Court recently passed a resolution in favor of the new name.

Sheriff James Singleton says Maleah's biological father also approved the signs.

[...]

The county is still waiting on approval from the Arkansas State Highway Commission.

If approved, a community event will be held to dedicate the new signs.

Arkansas sheriff leads effort to rename bridge in honor of Maleah Davis
[...]

Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton is leading the effort to rename the Red Lake Road Bridge over the interstate at Exit 18.

Singleton says the name change has been in process since he submitted a letter to the Arkansas Transportation Department on June 4 requesting for it to be named the “Maleah Davis Memorial Bridge.” Such requests for name changes are subject to approval by the highway department.

Singleton says the formal letter is the first of three criteria required to submit the renaming request to the Arkansas Highway Commission. A resolution must also be passed by the county’s quorum court, which was done on June 24. They also must have permission from a family member. Singleton says he has received that blessing from Maleah’s biological father, Craig Davis.
The process could take up to two months. Once approved, Singleton says they will begin the process of ordering the sign to state specifications. The highway department will install the signage.

[...]

When the signs are approved and installed, Singleton plans to hold a dedication inviting the public, Davis’s family, and media. He says several Houston officers have also expressed an interest in attending.

Singleton says they are “just trying to provide a means to honor this young baby,” and remember all missing and exploited children in the U.S.

[...]

“We hope everyone remembers she was a part of Hempstead County, no matter how tragic,” said Singleton.

GRAND JURY INDICTS FOR TAMPERING WITH CORPSE IN MALEAH DAVIS DEATH
July 25, 2019

A grand jury indicted Derion M. Vence for tampering with the body of Maleah Davis, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Thursday.

The indictment for the felony offense of Tampering with Evidence comes weeks after prosecutors charged the defendant on May 11 with the same offense.

“Our work continues to seek justice for Maleah,” Ogg said.

When prosecutors receive a final autopsy report from the medical examiner’s office, that evidence will be considered as part of any decision regarding possible additional charges.

Maleah’s remains were found in Hope, AR, along Interstate 30, on May 31.

Maleah Davis Memorial Bridge approved in Arkansas
The "Maleah Davis Memorial Bridge" is now closer to reality.

“This baby was left on the side of the road not 500 feet from [the bridge]. A cruel thing happened to her in our county,” says Sheriff James Singleton, who helped lead the renaming effort.

“Our county wants to remember this young child, bringing attention to keep your babies close."

The Arkansas Department of Transportation says it usually takes much longer for naming requests to be approved.

“This is one that the commission felt strongly about and was happy to do so,” said spokesperson Danny Straessle. Straessle says it’s now up to the County to design and purchase signs for the bridge.

Maleah Davis update: DA's office files new charge against Derion Vence
The Harris County District Attorney's office has filed a new charge against Derion Vence.

Court records show he is now charged with injury to a child/serious bodily injury in Maleah Davis' death, a first-degree felony. The new charge was filed Monday.

Vence, 27, is still charged with tampering with a corpse. A grand jury indicted him on this charge on July 25.

"After a review of all of the evidence, including the autopsy results, prosecutors determined there was sufficient evidence to charged Vence with intentionally and knowingly causing serious bodily injury to a child younger than 15 years of age," Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement Monday.

[...]

Vence is expected to appear in court on the new charge on Wednesday. The charge of injury to a child/serious bodily injury cares a penalty of five to 99 years in prison. The previous charge -- tampering with a corpse, a second-degree felony -- carries a penalty of two to 20 years in prison.

MALEAH DAVIS: Derion Vence facing new injury to a child charge in 4-year-old's death
[...]

The state earlier this month filed a motion for a protective order on medical records Vence's defense team requested. Court documents show the defense is seeking medical records from two hospitals, including Sugar Land Methodist, where the suspect made his original claim of being attacked. The defense is also seeking Maleah's medical records from Texas Children's and West Houston hospitals.

New charge filed against Derion Vence in connection with Maleah Davis' death
[...]

The charge is a first-degree felony, which carries the same penalty as murder, five to 99 years in prison.

"When all is said and done, if a jury finds this defendant guilty of injury to a child, the penalty range is the same as it would be had a jury convicted him of murder, five to 99 years to life in a penitentiary," KPRC legal analyst Brian Wice said.

[...]

If prosecutors had charged Vence with murder, they would have had to convince a jury that he knowingly and intentionally caused Maleah's death. Instead, with the injury to a child charge, prosecutors will have to convince a jury that Vence knowingly and intentionally caused Davis serious bodily injury.

[...]

According to court documents, Vence is accused of knocking Maleah to the floor, causing her to suffer a blunt trauma injury and then failing to provide Maleah with proper medical care for the injury.

According to court documents, prosecutors will argue that Davis knowingly and intentionally caused Davis serious bodily injury in five ways: by striking her with his hand, with a blunt object, by causing her to strike the floor, by causing her to strike a blunt object, and by failing to provide proper medical care to her.

[...]

Medical examiners said they will not release Maleah's autopsy results until the investigation is over.

UPGRADED CHARGE FILED IN DEATH OF FOUR-YEAR-OLD MALEAH DAVIS

August 5, 2019

Derion Vence was charged Monday with a first-degree felony, punishable by up to life in prison, in the death of four-year-old Maleah Davis, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Monday.

The charge of intentionally causing serious bodily injury to a child comes after Vence, 27, was previously charged with the crime of tampering with a corpse.

Maleah’s remains were recovered in Arkansas and brought back to Houston, where the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences completed an autopsy, recently finalized and forwarded to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

After a review of all of the evidence, including the autopsy results, prosecutors determined there was sufficient evidence to charge Vence with intentionally and knowingly causing seriously bodily injury to a child younger than 15 years of age.

The case was investigated by Houston Police.

The first-degree felony filed Monday carries a penalty of five to 99 years or life in prison.

Vence has previously been charged in connection with Maleah’s death with tampering with a corpse, a second-degree felony that carries a penalty of two to 20 years in prison. That charge remains in place.
