Found Alive UK - Ashya King, 5, Southampton, 28 Aug 2015

According to the FB of one of the brothers, Ashya was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The descriptions of how affected he is are very sad - can't track people with his eyes, can't move.. [modsnip], I think they may have decided Ashya has suffered enough and they no longer want to subject him to medical procedures that in the end won't save his life. Bear in mind that if support was ceased in hospital, feeding would be withdrawn.

I'm wondering if they're heading for the Netherlands or Switzerland.

I agree with above: If he's been through numerous treatments, etc ... and may not be expected to live, they may just want him to be with them, privately, when it happens.

They have that right, and I'm not sure why they're being tracked down.

Also, not sure this is what they may be considering, but Medical Marijuana is now helping those with cancer tremendously, and yes, even stage 4.

They couldn't give him that in a hospital setting as of yet, since it's not used within medical facilities yet.

Just a possibility ...

Police now seem firm in belief that Ashya is in Spain. Live updates at the link.

'Assistant Chief Constable Chris Shead said: "The need to find Ashya is now desperate. It is really important that we find him and ensure he receives medical attention at the earliest opportunity.'

"We still don't know whether the King family has any spare batteries for the machine which administers food, the knowledge, or any way of recharging the battery. Without properly administered food Ashya's situation is very serious.'

BBM
"There have been widespread media alerts across Europe, we would now encourage anyone with links to Spain particularly to also help us spread the appeal via social media." '

Does anyone have enough Spanish to put a few tags in? Missing child, missing five yr old etc?

Also, if the family is wanting him to "go"... they have hospice in the UK, no? (I am in the US). If he is near death, hospice provides support and medical care while a loved one "goes" peacefully at home (if that is what the patient/family desire). Would this not have been an option? On the contrary... if the hospital wanted to stop the tube feedings (because his body is shutting down and he is dying) and the parents weren't ready to take that step... well wouldn't that ultimately be their decision anyway?

I am sorry, this post is no help. I am just pretty confused about why exactly the parents felt the need to take this drastic step, or what they hope to accomplish.

Indeed we do and, if the prognosis is poor then doctors are generally very amenable to going palliative care only. At least that way he'd have access to proper nursing care, pain relief and sedation, if necessary, with the possibility of being discharged home, with support, or into a hospice. Without that, and with the risk of infection or other post surgical complications the parents may not be able to handle, and possibly without the ability to maintain feeding, the end is unlikely to be as pretty as some people are envisaging.

Obviously they're not releasing all the information, and so we're left speculating to some extent as to their motives. We know he had surgery very recently, which I can't imagine would have happened if the doctors had given up hope on him and death was felt to be imminent. It's worth noting that the parents were allowed to take him out for periods in time in preparation for potentially going home. On the other hand, while the courts may have been involved from an early stage, [modsnip], I can't imagine them ordering surgery for Stage 4 cancer over the parents' heads. It may be the case that the parents have been told the medium to long term prognosis is poor and their trying to seek out "alternative" treatment that their doctors are unable to support.

Telegraph seems to confirm this suspicion:

It is thought the Kings may be heading to Spain to seek a second opinion on their son’s condition in a desperate attempt to do all they can to save his life.
A family friend claimed the Kings had fled the country because they refused to accept that ‘nothing can be done’ for their dangerously ill son.
Katie Fletcher made her comment on the Hampshire Police Facebook page, stating: “This is my mother’s friend, she has run away in desperation because they cannot accept that there is nothing that can be done for their son.
“They want to look for help abroad. Please don’t judge – they are a very sweet loving family and I can only believe they are doing this because they want to help their son.”

I don't know whether or not Marbella is renowned for excellent and reputable oncology centres, but if they were looking for a respectable "second opinion," absconding from the hospital with him 7 days post surgery, taking him on a long journey by sea and road, and rocking up in a hospital or clinic in Spain without his medical records wouldn't seem to be the best way to go about it.

Thank you ! :)

So do we know how he came to be in this condition? Did he have an accident, an illness or was he born with a condition? The very idea he was already in the hospital with a feeding tube means his parents consent to medical treatment. ;)

ETA Never mind, saw the answer in the posts. Poor baby :(

If told there is nothing that can be done, then why are they not free to go to another country to get an opinion? They must have been told they could not, otherwise they would not swipe him and flee. What a load !

Interesting conversation on the Hampshire Constabulary Facebook page:

Rachel Webb Just read on the bbc news that the pump to feed him battery ran out. So at minimum hes starving and unable to eat. How can anyone justify that that isnt a crime? He might have a pallative diagnosis but there are ways they could travel around the world if they wanted. With the proper care and medication and support. There are loads of services within the NHS and the childrens charity sector that would of supported them. I really hope they find them soon and get him to a hospital make sure the boy is cared for and then assess the familys wishes. On a side thought for all those who say this isnt a crime and leave them alone. How is this little boy getting any pain relief- he cant swallow so your liquid based childrens paracetamol wont work.

Steph Mawer You don't need the pump, it's just for ease. You can do the same with a syringe.

Rachel Webb But if your changing his dietry routine without being a specialist then there is the potential for things like refeeding syndrome, dehydration, and gastric disturbances to name a few.

This is a hard one. If the family are desperate to find help for Ashya, then why not? I understand their son had surgery recently, so the timing isn't good, but they may feel time is running out and they have to try everything possible.
I wonder if the family had discussed their options with Drs, and the medical staff thought it would not be wise to take Ashya and travel so far with him looking for help. They seemed to know where the family were planning to head to.
I can't blame the parents for trying everything, and not wanting to give, but I do hope Ashya isn't suffering.x
